The First Clash at the Coliseum went off without a hitch. This was the perfect place to have an event. The Colisum is a beautiful venue. With mostly local fighters on the card the audience was packed with fans. There were 2 featured main events on the card and both were great fights. Charlie Herrera from Smiley Combat Athletix in Jacksonville Florida and Anthony "Shadow" Thomas from Orlando, Florida. The match was exciting from the start and in the end, Charlie won by split decision. Jerry Daniels from Elite Muay Thai won by unanimous decision over Dustin Holyko from Daytona Beach Armory. This was the only heavyweight fight of the night and definitely the one the crowd was waiting to see. Special guests of the evening were IKF Representative Sean Wohl, of Fighters Inc. from Ormond Beach, and Coaches Dominique Simmons of Elite Muay Thai in Daytona, Dan Rawlings of, Griffin Rawl in Tampa, Richard Crunkilton of Daytona, Enrique Franceschi of Orlando. UFC Offers Fighters'
Training Without The Fighting
By
Beau Dure,
USA TODAY
Ultimate Fighting Championship is betting that everyday people are looking for a chance to train like Brock Lesnar or Georges St. Pierre without being punched in the face.
UFC is partnering with Mark Mastrov, (L) founder of the 24 Hour Fitness chain, to build UFC Gyms, offering a blend of traditional and modern workouts with a healthy dose of UFC atmosphere.
For UFC President Dana White, (R) who worked in the fitness industry before moving into mixed martial arts, the gyms are a chance to extend UFC's brand as the company goes global. White, not one to keep his ambitions quiet, thinks the new business can make an impact.
"The fitness industry has gotten stale, much like the fight industry had gotten stale," White says. "A lot of it hasn't changed much since the 60s a lot of the same equipment, a lot of the same stuff going on. We're going to have treadmills and weights for people who still want that, but there's going to be a lot of different things."
Those different things may include flipping tires, lifting chains, swinging sledgehammers or lugging bricks.
"If you look at the world today when it comes to training, everybody's starting to morph off into what I call nontraditional training," Mastrov says. "What UFC Gyms is going to do is leverage that."
Workouts can also include classes in mixed martial arts disciplines such as jiu-jitsu, taekwondo or Muay Thai fighting. But Mastrov and White see their gyms as a lively workout facility for all types of people, not as a breeding ground for new fighters.
"We're going to bring the programs to help you get in shape like those fighters," Mastrov says. "If you find yourself eventually wanting to be a fighter, you're going to go to the places that really train you to become a fighter. We'll have a lot of entry-level programming around that, and I'm sure a lot of fighters will come work out here on their strength, their core. The actual sparring and fighting isn't going to be done in our centers."
The atmosphere, though, may feel like a fight night. The gyms will have flat-screen TVs offering UFC footage as well as the usual cable choices, and Mastrov says they'll have plenty of music with "nice bass."
"When you're working out, it's going to almost be like being at an event how visually stimulating an event is," White says.
Yes, the gyms will have an Octagon, the eight-sided cage used for UFC fights, for a few functions and perhaps for some curiosity-seekers who want to know how it feels to be confined in a fighting space. If customers would rather stick with treadmills and a kickboxing class, with an unconventional tire-flipping drill mixed in, the gyms will give that without the fight-club environment. "This gym won't be intimidating," White says.

UFC Gets Into The Gym
Business
From
mmapayout.com
In what can be seen as extending out their brand (or going outside their core competence) the UFC announced today that they will be entering the health club business:
UFC Gym officials said they are close to breaking ground on the first of five health clubs planned in California, and plan to build more such gyms across the country and in Canada. "We're going to force all these other gyms to take it up to another level," UFC President Dana White told The Associated Press on Monday. "Just like we have in the fight business, and everyone's trying to compete with us now, same thing's going to happen in the fitness industry." White said most gyms and health clubs haven't changed in years, giving the mixed martial arts league an opportunity to attract new fitness customers or others wanting to get different kinds of workouts under the same roof. The gyms aren't intended for professional or amateur fighters.
The move shouldn't be a big surprise. The UFC have felt that various parts of the gym/training business have been reaping the benefits of the mixed martial arts explosion that the UFC claims credit for. Joe Silva (R, UFC Vice-President and Matchmaker) spoke with Florida Today and commented on the Zuffa mindset of others capitalizing off Zuffa's rise to prominence:
"What's the new hook that we can get people into the dojos with?" Silva said of an attitude that has disgusted him in the past. "Now you have Tae Kwon Do schools and they (say), 'Yeah, we have grappling.' They're looking to appeal to the consumer, and the consumer is watching UFC on TV, on Spike TV and on pay-per-view."

"FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS!"
January 9th, 2009 -
Jacksonville, Florida, USA
Jacksonville loves IKF and Kickboxing and was definitely ready for the first fight of the year! There were a lot of hometown favorites on the card tonight, which you could tell by all the spectators. Special thanks and recogintion goes out to coach James Smiley from Combat Athletix in Orange Park Florida. He had 6 fighters on the card tonight and already has fighters signed up for next month. He is dedicated to his students and to the sport of kickboxing. On to the fights!
The first fight of the night was a crowd favorite as Angelica Henson took on Samantha Jennings. Angelica dominated this fight and won by TKO in round 1. Another great fight was between Jovan White and Dez Buchanan. Both fighters had great skill but Jovan won by unanimous decision.
Here are the results of ALL THE NIGHTS BOUTS.

Cichon
Unanimous Over Sirman
For
IKF World Title Win!
One thing will be set in the minds of the packed house for Friday nights IKF Amateur World Title! WOW! Whether the WOWS went towards Cichon's explosive punches or kicks or the way Sirman took shot after thunderous shot and stood his ground, their would be plenty of WOWS to go around. It was a fight of True Gentlemen both inside and outside the ring. Both well deserving of the title, on this night Cichon proved to be the more busy of the two. Cichon came out blazing right along Sirman in round 1 as each threw a pretty even amount of kicks, around 13-14 each. However, it was Cichon's hands that kept him ahead on the judges cards throughout the fight.
In round 2, Cichon kept up the kick count with 13 but Sirman dropped to 6. The drop off was due to the pressure Cichon put on him after his kicks, kick, kick, step in and work. Cichon kept Sirman backing up most of the round landing some pretty good shots.
Round 3 was back close again on the kick count at 15 each, but it was Cichon's hands again that kept him ahead. It was surprising to see how little Sirman threw his hands seeming to opt for kicks when he could have scored more effectively with his hands when close. However, if you want a good judgement of what really happened in this fight, round 4 showed it all. in round 4 Cichon only threw 9 kicks to Sirman's 16, but it was the damage he did with his hands that set him apart in everyone's eyes. There were three times when Cichon hit Sirman so hard with combinations that he snapped Sirman's head back, but remained strong. Everyone in the room wondered how he stood his feet on all three Cichon blitz'. We had to believe even Cichon wondered why he didn't go down.
After the explosive round 4, Cichon went back to basics as he exploded with 20 kicks to Sirman's 13. Still, it was Cichon's mixes of hands and feet that won him the 5th straight round. In the end, Cichon scored an impressive unanimous decision victory over a very tough Alex Sirman, 50-45 on all three judges cards.
Will we see a rematch? Possibly, but we here at the IKF feel we would rather see Sirman drop down to Super Welterweight (147.1 lbs. - 153 lbs. - 66.9 kg - 69.5 kg) and take a shot at the vacant IKF World title there. In the Super Welterweight division there would be plenty of contenders to meet up with him which include Josh Fournier of Orange Park, Florida, USA, 8-0-1, Mitchell Whiley of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, 7-1, Rolando Luna of Dalton, Georgia, USA, 6-5, Bill Mathies of Bourbonnais, Illinois, USA, 14-6/8 or Matthew Puckett of Little Rock, Arkansas, USA, 9-3/2. Not that we don't think Sirman can compete at light middle, but since he weighed in at 155, he would be much stronger dropping down 2 lbs and being at the top of a weightclass instead of so close to the bottom... just a thought...
This was a an explosive bout and yet another great Champion emerges from Cichon's own gym, Celler Kickboxing Club. Chris now joins his other two team members who are also IKF Amateur World Champions, all trained by Justin Whiley which include, Adam McDermid of Mt. Iron, Minnesota, USA and Jon Lewis St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. A great group of Champions from an outstanding gym, Cellar Kickboxing.

Minnesota Promoter
Bobby Anderson...(R) Warrior Fitness & Fight Promotions Presents
Sirman
Meets Cichon | ||||
This coming Friday night, January 9th, Cellar Kickboxing's Chris Cichon will meet up with England's Alex Sirman for the vacant IKF Amateur Full Contact Rules Light Middleweight World Title at the Robert's Night Club in Mounds View, Minnesota, USA. Although he has been promoting for years, this event is the third in a row of IKF Promoter Bobby Anderson that will feature a large IKF Title. This past November 15th, Anderson's Warriors Fight Promotions featured Jorden Allen of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, (13-8-1/2) Vs Dee Jay Jones of Kernersville, North Carolina, USA, (17-8/2) for the vacant IKF Amateur FCR Lightweight North American Title. When the smoke cleared, Allen walked away with the title by unanimous decision, 48-47, 48-47, 48-47. Prior to this event, back on September 19th, Anderson hosted an IKF Amateur World title bout when Adam McDermid of Mt. Iron, Minnesota, USA, (23-4-1/6) defeated Daniel Brison of Hurricane, West Virginia, USA, (8-2/5) to win the vacant IKF Amateur FCR Cruiserweight World Title by unanimous decision, 50-43, 50-43 and 49-44. Friday's event will be the first IKF event of what looks to be an busy and exciting new year. Cichon has been well known with the IKF here for years. He had first challenged the previous number 2 and number 3 contenders, Pat Sheehan of Sittngbourn, Kent, England, (8-1/2) and Matt Gilbert of Rainham, Kent, England, (6-3/0) however both had to miss their shot at the title. Sheehan had an injury to deal with while Gilbert lost his bid for the title on November 30th last year in Kent, England when Alex Sirman defeated him by unanimous decision 30-27. 29-28. 30-27. Gilbert's trainer Colin Payne thought it only fair to pull him from the match-up and give the shot to Sirman who deserved it by the victory. It was an honorable thing you rarely see trainers do, but that should give you an idea as to the integrity of Mr. Payne. It didn't matter to Cichon who he would face though. He's coming off probably the best year of his life having won both the IKF Light Middleweight USA Title back on May 30th, 2008 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA when he defeated Leroy Walters by unanimous decision, 50-43 all 3 judges. |
||||
That IKF title was followed up by 3 straight "Impressive" victories at last years 2008 IKF World Classic Tournament. in the opening round of fighting, Cichon defeated Dan Silny of Miami, Florida, USA by TKO at :29 seconds of round 1. Later that day he defeated Travis Jones of Blairsville, Georgia, USA by unanimous decision, 30-27, 29-28 & 29-28. In his Championship bout he defeated who had been the number 1 contender, Pat Sheehan of Sittngbourn, Kent, England by KO at 1:12 of round 1. This was all followed up with yet another Tournament Title victory by unanimous decision over Michael Davenport only a couple of weeks later. In all, Cichon went undefeated in 2008 with a perfect record of 6-0 and hadn't lost since June of 2007. Simply put, "He's on a Roll!" Cichon also held the IKF Amateur Full Contact Rules Central USA Regional Light Middleweight title which he had won back on February 11, 2006 in Waterloo, Iowa, USA when he defeated Frank Young of Bettendorf, Iowa, by unanimous decision 40-36, 40-36 & 40-36. Cichon's title was retired when he won his IKF Amateur Full Contact Rules United States Light Middleweight Title on May 30th, 2008. If he wins the World title on Friday, he will retire the USA Title since a fighter only keeps the larger of a title in the same weightclass. Not much is known about contender Alex Sirman, which doesn't make it easy for Cichon. Sometimes it's the fighters you know little about that tend to be the biggest challenge. This may work heavily in Sirman's favor come fight night. He probably knows a lot about Cichon though since he has been so active and had his fights well documented. As for Sirman, the only bout we here at the IKF were able to find him in from last year was the victory over Matt Gilbert and a victory in October of 2008 over another English fighter named James Penny by decision. This being said, there will be more pressure on Cichon in this bout as he enters the ring as a heavily favored multi time Champion. In the other corner, the little known Sirman will be the obvious out of town underdog that could turn out to be the ultimate spoiler who could walk out of the ring Friday night as a new World Champion. With these two story lines colliding, it will make for some great drama leading up to the first IKF Title fight of 2009. If you don't have a ticket yet, you may want to pick one up now. This main event will be the ultimate ending to a full night of Kickboxing, Bobby Anderson Style. Remember fight fans, favored or underdog,
once these two Gladiators enter the ring Friday night, history means little.

REAL Kickboxing Vs Boxing Or Martial
Arts... | ||
|
Recently we read an e-mail where a proclaimed "Grand Master of Isshinryu Karate" stated, "I think Isshinryu is a beautiful martial art and kick-boxing is simply a boxing match." Many here can imagine how big our eyes rolled when we read this. It was like when IKF President Steve Fossum (Left) has tried to educate California State Athletic Commission appointed officials to IKF Sanctioned events in California about Kickboxing and Muay Thai rules. Two examples of this come to mind. The first was in the late 90's when Fossum was reviewing IKF Kickboxing rules with the State appointed California State Athletic Commission Boxing officials. Fossum asked them if they had ever judged a Kickboxing or Muay Thai bout before and one replied, "No, but it's just boxing with kicks so what's so hard about it?" What Fossum and other LEGIT Kickboxing and Muay Thai Officials such as Dan Stell (Right) found out through the years was that the State still to this day has NEVER held ANY officials training for Kickboxing or Muay Thai... NONE! They still today, as they have always done, take their BOXING officials and appoint them to Kickboxing and Muay Thai events to hopefully "Learn as they go." It goes without saying, some never did learn and still are terrible Kickboxing and Muay Thai referees. Another prime example was on April 24th, 2004 in Santa Barbara, California. It was the discussion in the pre-fight rules meeting that rolled a lot of eyes of knowledgable Muay Thai fighters and trainers. Let it be noted that before the IKF did it in the early 90's, NO CALIFORNIA Official had EVER given any type of pre-event rules meeting to the fighters. NONE! A lot of this was simply because many of the appointed Kickboxing and or Muay Thai officials knew very little if anything about kickboxing and were even worse with Muay Thai. On the event above, Fossum was giving the rules meeting and was asked about a certain rule in Muay Thai known as "Flash Knockdowns." In traditional or REAL Muay Thai as stated in the Official IKF Muay Thai Rules as well, "In TRUE Muay Thai as with these rules, FLASH KNOCKDOWNS where the knocked down fighter rises up immediately after being knocked down are NOT COUNTED AS A KNOCKDOWN OR STANDING 8 COUNTS." One of the California based Muay Thai fighters asked if the commission was going to recognize this rule. Fossum turned to the two referees and stated the rule and the eyes rolled when the replies were given. Referee Cecil Peoples (Left) answered, "There is no such rule and no such thing as a 'Flash Knockdown'." Peoples then said, "If anyone knows Muay Thai rules here it's Dej Sriampai (Left) since Dej is a Thai and has refereed in Thailand, Dej, have you ever heard os any such rule?" and Sriampai replied, "No Never." Peoples had a background in Full Contact (Above the waist) fighting and knew the rules and regulations of the ring. However, as many Kickboxing referees are, he was limited in his knowledge of Muay Thai. On behalf of the Muay Thai fighters on the event, Fossum tried to explain the rule to both Peoples and Sriampai but Peoples felt he knew more about the sport than Fossum and instead of "Learning" a legit rule, he wanted to make Fossum look less than him so he choose to insult him in front of everyone and shut him down. Peoples went on to say, "Unless Dean (Lohuis, one of the chief Commission officials at the time) tells us it's a rule, it's not a rule." On the same event during one of the bouts, a fighter was dropped by a leg kick but was getting back up. Peoples started giving the fighter an 8 count (There are no 8 counts from a leg kick drop in a leg kick bout unless the fighter stays down) and Fossum tried to correct the call to Peoples which Peoples shouted to Fossum at ringside "Shut-up!" Although Peoples was wrong in his call, Fossum was at least man enough to apologize for trying to correct the call during the action. However, Peoples ego was too much for the apology and he blew it off. Since the incident, neither have spoken. "After that event and the way Cecil handled the rules meeting and an incident in the ring and the apology, I lost all respect for him as a referee and even as a person." Said Fossum. Rightly so because in the end, even Peoples surly found out that he was wrong on both accounts and Fossum's reference to the "Flash Knockdown rule" was 100% correct. |
|
These were not the only cases of this kind. Even today many State Commissions appoint BOXING Officials with NO Kickboxing or Muay Thai experience to their State overseen Kickboxing and Muay Thai events. The same problem occurred when State Commissions started regulating MMA. States such as California would just throw their boxing, and what they thought were credible Kickboxing officials into the ring to be MMA Referees. The results were horrendous! These Officials knew NOTHING about MMA and even the fighters and trainers knew it. WHY do State Commissions allow this to happen? WHY can't State Commission properly train ring officials? Some do, but the VAST majority do NOTHING for Kickboxing and Muay Thai. Only when MMA exploded in popularity did Commissions start offer MMA Officials Training, but STILL, NO Training for Kickboxing and Muay Thai Referees. It's Sad. It takes more than a Karate background to be a true MMA, Kickboxing or Muay Thai referee. Not to toot his horn because of his relationship to the IKF, but Dan Stell is by far one of the BEST Kickboxing, Muay Thai and arguably one of the BEST MMA Referees we have ever seen work a ring. Stell was a Martial Artist, a Point Karate Fighter and more importantly, a Kickboxing Fighter and champion. He KNOWS the REAL Fight Ring! In California, Stell has no competition as to who is the best referee for Kickboxing and Muay Thai! The downfall to the system in California is that Stell chooses not to "kiss Axx" to those appointing the event officials. It's clear to MANY that because of this, those doing the Kissing seem to get the most work, especially in MMA. No matter how TERRIBLE or what "Conflict of interests" some of the State Officials have related to the events and the fighters on them, if the Kissing is good, they keep working the shows. BACK TO THE
HEADLINE... Dear Sir, I trained with both Eizo and Tatsu Shimabuku while I was stationed for a couple of years in Okinawa and Viet Nam. Many of the old Isshinryu guys over there were good fighters and I had fun sparring them and competing against those that fought. Remember, Tatsu got credit for starting Isshinryu; however, Eizo and Tatsu actually created this style together, and at one time they both taught it exclusively. Then they broke up in 1954 when Tatsu was given the Marine Corps contract over Eizo---Special Services would only award one person the contract, Tatsu got it. Steve Armstrong set up this whole deal. In the old days, karate-jitsu, not karatedo as taught today, was originally full contact. Call today's fighting what you want, full contact, kickboxing, MMA or whatever---the concept is not important---it is fighting, real fighting---none of that stop your punches or kicks short of the target nonsense. I am sorry if I offend anyone but fighting is about making contact---stopping, dropping, or making your opponent quit. The holly grail of fighting is accuracy --- not speed, power, pulling your shots (the art of missing), or sportsmanship or humility. If you have never done it --- then you do not know real fighting. You can study it, observe it, teach it, or write about it; however, if you have never experienced it, how can you claim to know what it's about? The same is true about actually being on the firing line in real combat. "No one knows in advance how the nerves of real combat are going to hit you." As a former marine, In the Marine Corps, we have a saying, "Bravery is not the absence of fear, it is having the courage to confront it." I have another, "Those who fight in real competition have the courage to discover that which ones inner character is made of, and those who avoid the ring are willing to settle for not knowing that which they are not." I am not challenging anyone's right to express an opinion --- I am only unclear about the context and why anyone, especially a 10-Dan, would state something as knowledge without being supported by verifiable evidence. Respectfully, Lewis' thoughts are the thoughts of many involved in full contact fight sports today. REAL Fighting is FAR from "Karate" fighting. Many "Karate" instructors want people to believe they know what full contact is but VERY FEW have EVER even taken a punch let alone be able to truly teach the physical and mental applications of defending from a full contact strike. Back in the 90's EVERY Karate school all of a sudden was a Kickboxing expert with claims of "Cardio Kickboxing" classes plastered on their school windows. by 2006, these same instructors, who had never even grappled on the ground, were now MMA experts. They are on every street corner it seems, so called "Experts" of skills they know NOTHING about. What a Joke! in fact, the even sadder thing today is what most "Karate" schools are teaching. FEW truly teach the values of Karate and Martial Arts. Instead, it's all about promoting a student every two months so they will keep paying their dues, even if they are not ready. What happened to "REAL Martial Art" schools? Are they gone? Has the mighty dollar surpassed the challenge of forming a true martial artist? After a few others replied to this topic via e-mail, Lewis brought the reality of this topic to a definitive close. He wrote, "This is what happens when the so called want-a-be and the never-was types open their envious insecure mouths. Some martial artists never understand that when they have nothing to say, keep your mouth shut. They always need to feel important by trying to say something when they should be listening. Sometimes and very sadly, this ignorance is perceived as insecurity and self-abandonment. It is an inner void of many that will never be filled ---- especially when they want to continue babbling on. I am sorry to sound harsh --- but reality is the boss." Let's hope 2009 brings the reality of
Kickboxing to the TV sets of the world, so they can see that "Karate -
(Be it Taw Kwon Do, Kenpo, Shotokan, Isshin-Ryu or any other 'Style' of Karate)"
is Far from the Explosive Stand-up Skill and Excitement of |

Fulfills His Dream... | ||
The dream of most every martial artist is to first achieve black belt. This may be followed by owning their own school so that they can have an opportunity to make a career out of sharing the knowledge that has been handed down to them by others through the years. For some, those dreams go even further, as they did with 2 time Professional Kickboxing World Champion Johnny "Superfoot" Davis. Between 1980 and 1985 he won the North Carolina Light Middleweight title, East Coast Welterweight title and the North Carolina Welterweight title. In 1984 he won the Grand Champion Title at the famous, Battle of Atlanta which at the time was the Largest Karate Tournament on the East Coast. He reached the rank of 2nd Degree Black Belt as he went on to win over 250 medals, trophies and awards in competition. During this time he also opened "Superfoot" Davis School of Karate back on the east coast. However, through it all, Davis' biggest dream was to one day become a World Champion Kckboxer. In 1985 Davis fulfilled that first World Title dream with a decision victory over Alvin Prowder in Denver Colorado when he won the PKA World Welterweight Title. In 1987 he followed up in winning the FFKA World title and in 1987 he won the ISKA US title. As time past, Davis ended up handing the school over to someone else when he moved out to the west coast. His west coast move didn't keep him out of the fight game though. He continued to teach through seminars, write an instructional manual that was followed up by a video/DVD series and the creation of several kickboxing and fitness programs kept him busy. In addition, he became a loyal representative of the largest kickboxing organization in the world, the IKF, International Kickboxing Federation. Davis sanctioned all of his west coast kickboxing promotions with the IKF and hosted many IKF title bouts. Still, Davis wanted more... Which brings us to the action of this weekend. This Saturday, Davis will come back to one of his first dreams of once again owning his own school. As time passes we all hope to become more experienced and more wiser and these are the golden tools of an instructor with some history behind him such as Davis. He is excited about the even greater opportunity to pass on his knowledge as well as use the school to fulfill even more dreams such as producing his own Kickboxing and Boxing Champions. Yes, Davis' school will also be a gym for fighters. Johnny and his wife Helen would like to invite you all to the Grand Opening of the their new facility, the Rocklin Kickboxing and Boxing Club, (RKBC) this Saturday, January 3rd, 2009 from 10:AM to 4:PM. There will be Food and Music at Noon! RKBC is located at 4415 Granite Drive, Suite 600, Rocklin, CA, 95677. |

The RKBC is 3600 hundred square feet in size with carpeted floors and mirrors all around. The Club is divided into two sections separated by a wall and 8' iron antique doors. The lobby area has beautiful painted concrete floors and a pro shop with kickboxing and boxing goods along with plenty of IKF Merchandise for sale. Track lighting and solar lights line the ceiling and gives the club a serene and relaxed atmosphere. Quotes such as the club's motto landscapes the walls... "If I believe it, I can achieve it but I will never give up" These quotes are constant reminders to all attendees to give their very best all the time. In the rear gym room there is a 4 corner bag stand loaded with various heavy bags for workouts and of course, more mirrors.
