Saturday April 23 (Easter weekend) saw the 1st
installment of the fight series CHALLENGER take place. 'CONCUSSION'
was to live up to expectations and more. The event was booked back in January
2011 with 2 of the main bouts featuring Canada against Japanese athletes in
World Title bids. But as events of March 2011 unfolded in Japan, the event
turned into a fund raiser for those stricken by catastrophe. The event took on
the nickname of 'MuayThai for Japan'.
Presented by Ajarn Mike Miles, CAKMA, Mike Miles
MuayThai & Kickboxing Ltd., The Calgary SUN, Reflexions of the Garden, the
Century Casino (Calgary), The Fan, Travelodge Calgary South, PS Graphics,
and Genesis 2.
The event featured a full house. "The support was
great for the event and for the cause, Japan and the victims of the earthquake
and everything that resulted after", stated promoter Mike Miles.
"Easter weekend saw over 70% of my regular sponsors as well as fight
supporters out of town. But the venue was full and the event delivered beyond
expectation. The athletes and the scheduled fights were awesome, getting
standing ovations! "
A special thank you goes Dave Kunz (Avatara
Photography) for his amazing photography and enthusiasm to support the event
and the fund raising. A thank you goes out to all the sponsors, the coaches (Kru
Yuki Tatsuno, Kru Ruth Wilson, Ajarn Amnat Yodkwain, Kru Sincy Outhaivong, Kru
Mukai Maromo, Kru Sandra Bastian, Kru Erik Lollike, Kru Jason Jillain, andSifu
Greg Louie) and athletes who all acted very professionally, the media, Shelley
Evans, Sherry Heyliger of Creative Impetus, all the volunteers and
all the fans who came and supported the event for those stricken in Japan.
Thank you to everyone", said Mike Miles. "This
event supported our motto of 'Competition in the ring, collaboration in life!' I
was blown away by the event period!"

Rounds of 3 Minutes
Misty Sutherland/Kolozetti
(Calgary/Miles) vs. Titiana Van Polanen-Petel
(Holland/La Rose)
- There is truth in the old fight saying that 'styles make fights'. Could not
have been any truer on this fight. The Dutch girl was a purely defensive fighter
in this match, and this has been the style of the Canadian girl for years. Sutherland/Kolozetti
was making her professional fight debut while the Dutch girl, Van
Polanen-Petel was the two time Professional Shootboxing Champion. In the
first two rounds Van Polanen-Petel did not want to exchange and every
time Sutherland/Kolozetti pressed the Dutch athlete would move back and
circle around the ring. In rounds three and four Sutherland/Kolozetti
continued with pressing the fight and throwing long roundhouse kicks and knees,
many of which scored to the body. Van Polanen-Petel started to come to
life in these rounds, and counter punched with some of the blows catching the
advancing Canadian athlete. Sutherland/Kolozetti would counter the Dutch
girls counters, but the majority were single shots while the Dutch athlete would
counter in two's and three's. Rounds' one and two were handily Sutherland/Kolozetti's
while rounds three and four could have been Van Polanen-Petel's by a
very slight margin. The fight came down to the final round. Again Sutherland/Kolozetti
pressed forward and Polanen-Petel would counter with her hands, again
with some scoring but not with any telling effect. Half way through the round
the Canadian athlete started delivering roundhouse kicks to the body which
scored. When the bout ended, the fight was very close and the nod could have
gone either way. The judges scored a split decision to Misty
Sutherland/Kolozetti.
Titiana Van Polanen-Petel was not happy and she
felt she won the fight. Two Time World Shootboxing Champion Van
Polanen-Petel was first to admit she should not have left the fight in the
hands of the judges. "The fight was very close and could have went
either way," said Mike Miles. "A rematch in Holland on
Titiana's home turf would be a good response to the split decision."
Sutherland/Kolozetti found out after the event was over and during her post
fight medical that she had a fractured nose. "Misty said nothing about
her nose during the fight. I did not find out about the broken nose until the
next day", said Miles." There was no point where
Sutherland/Kolozetti appeared hurt or stunned by any of the Dutch girl's
punches. There was no standing eight nor was there any break in the action as a
result of any strong punches by Van Polanen-Petel."

Rounds
Peter Arbeau (Calgary/Miles)
vs. Ryo Saito (Japan/Tatsuno)
- From the opening bell this was a great fight, easily 'The Fight of
the Night'. At stake was the WKL World Middleweight MuayThai
Title and both athletes looked very fit and focused as they entered the ring. As
the bout started, Japanese athlete Saito had one thing in mind and that was
cornering and catching the Canadian Arbeau with a knockout shot. Complimenting
Saito's skills was an incredible desire to have the hardware around his
waist. Looking larger, more muscular, and physically stronger than Arbeau,
Saito had techniques and tactics to back up his physical appearance. Arbeau
looked very calm and smart in this fight utilizing movement and angles to try
and keep Saito from setting. In the first two rounds, Arbeau
kept up a very busy work pace and was mixing up his shots very well. Saito,
not to be outdone was not shy at exchanging leather as often as he could. Some
connected as Arbeau had his bleeding nose dealt with in between rounds
one and two. As the bout continued, though Arbeau got some good shots
through, Saito looked unfazed and would move forward and kept exchanging
with the Canadian. At the end of the 3rd round, Arbeau landed a strong
left hook and then pummeled in several head kicks. Saito was dazed and
given a standing eight.
As the bout commenced again the round ended and
Saito had time to recover in his corner. In the 4th round, Saito
took several good shots that shook him and then Arbeau smelled blood
forcing the fight into the clinch trying to and then, landing several knees to
the face. Saito was given another standing eight count and as the bout
recommenced, still looked shook. Arbeau pounced and followed up with
nice head kicks and started a long sustained attack from which Saito
suddenly countered. Arbeau, undaunted by the resistance pounced back in
and threw an onslaught of punches, kicks, elbows and knees. Having seen enough
sustained pressure and no answering by Saito, fearing for the well being
of the Japanese athlete, the referee stopped the fight seconds before the bell
went off ending the 4th round. The crowd erupted into a standing ovation.
Saito
was visibly upset but he represented himself and his country with skill, pride,
honor, and unquestionable desire. This fight will be talked about in Calgary for
years to come. Congratulations to Peter Arbeau on the new hardware
around his waist, the WKL World Middleweight MuayThai Title. Ryo
Saito won the award for the Best Out of Town Athlete and deservedly so.

Hakeem Dawodu (Calgary/Miles,
26-2, 2010
IKF World Classic Champion)
VS
Ryo Takagi (Japan/Kawaguchi,
15-3-1/5)
- This was also a very good fight from the start. As the fight opened Takagi
moved providing angles and threw long range punches. Undaunted, Dawodu
faked and landed a teep to the face of the Japanese opponent. After this, every
time Dawodu would flinch, the Japanese athlete would move back and
provide a different angle to the Canadian. In the first round, there were points
where Dawodu would start looking a little tense (as he could not
corner the wily Japanese athlete) but he would quickly settle down and fire
some long range kicks which were strong and fast enough that Takagi
could not get out of the way of (though he blocked them). Dawodu
was to eventually settle down and take his time.
In the second round Dawodu
came out controlling the ring and managed to get into the clinch and land a few
knees. Takagi would counter quickly with some long punches. Suddenly
after another fake, Dawodu jumped in a delivered a jump knee which
caught Takagi on the upper chest. The knee lifted and sent Takagi
backwards about 4 feet onto his back. Takagi could not make the count
from the blow and Dawodu was to win the title by 2nd round TKO.
Takagi
was moving very well and frustrating the Canadian so it would have been
interesting to see the fight go longer. On the other hand Dawodu did
what was required by settling down and planning his fight attack. Dawodu
has kept improving his skills fight by fight and has now shown he is easily one
of the best 140 lb. athletes in North America. Congratulations to Hakeem
Dawodu on winning the IKF World Light
Welterweight MuayThai Title. Dawodu was to win the Best In Town Athlete
of the Night.
- Full MuayThai Rules - 3 Rounds of 2

Phil Leier (Calgary/Miles) vs.
Elias Saliba (Toronto/Yodkeripauprai)
- Calgarian Leier was stepping back into the ring after a nineteen
month lay off due to injury. Squaring off against him across the ring was Siam
No. 1 athlete Elias Saliba trained by Ajarn Suchart Yodkeripauprai.
Leier regularly fights as a welterweight but moved up two divisions to
start his comeback in the ring. During his career as his bouts opened, Leier
usually started off very fast. In this fight he settled down and seemed content
to use his speed to score points on Saliba. The Toronto athlete provided
strong resistance. Leier played the fight defensively and would usually
open the exchange, and then counter Saliba's counter, usually with
scoring body kicks. Saliba would press forward at Leier who
would move defensively and counter. Saliba delivered some good punches
advancing while Leier did not deliver any strong punches retreating. The
fight was a good one for both athletes with neither athlete looking tired or
spent at the end of the fight. The decision was unanimous for Phil Leier
who successfully restarts his fighting career and looks forward to turning
professional soon. "Phil has some tuning up to do yet in his skills as
they were a little rusty with the long lay off, and we want to get him down to
his regular fighting weight. We have a battle plan to follow and when he is
ready, he will turn pro", said Mike Miles.
- Full MuayThai - 3 Rounds of 2 Minutes
/ Superlightweight
Nicci Soutiere (Calgary/Miles) vs.
Beth Mason (Toronto/Darwin)
- Soutiere was the smaller of the two athletes. But size really meant
nothing as Mason proved she was very skilled and came to fight. As the
fight started both athletes seemed very even in the skills department. However
in round two Soutiere turned up the steam and pressed really hard
forcing the pressure on Mason. Soutiere started dominating in the clinch
and on the outside used her teep at will. Mason fought back valiantly
trying to roundhouse kick and use her punches while Soutiere tried to
intercept on the outside when Mason kicked and fell into the clinch when
Mason wanted to punch. A great fight from two talented athletes.
Soutiere
was to win the nod by unanimous decision.
- Full MuayThai - 5 Rounds of 2 Minutes
/ Welterweight
Robbie Merrill (Edmonton/Maromo) vs.
Robert Hsu (Toronto/Amnat)
- Merrill had not been in the ring in over a year. This is his last
amateur MuayThai bout as Merrill will be crossing over to professional
MMA. Across the ring from him was Toronto's Robert Hsu. The Toronto
athlete did not have as much experience as Merrill but he was still a
skilled fighter. Hsu exchanged with and pressed the attack as much as Merrill
did. Midway through round three, Merrill delivered a spinning back elbow
which dropped Hsu down for the count.
Merrill was to win by
3rd round TKO.
- Modified MuayThai - 3 Rounds of 2
Minutes / Super Middleweight
Brad Hunt (Calgary/Miles) vs.
Ryan O'Donnell (Winnipeg/Outhaivong)
- There was a lot of give and take between these two fighters. O'Donnell
used his reach and delivered long punches up the center as well as long kicks.
Hunt maintained his composure and pressed forward landing as many body
shots as he could. This as a very close fight and again could have went either
way.
Brad Hunt was to take a split decision in this bout.
- Modified MuayThai - 3 Rounds of 2
Minutes / Lightweight
Max Carruthers (Calgary/Miles) vs.
Bruce Tran (Calgary/Louie)
- This was a superb opening to the fight event. A war between two up and
coming warriors. Tran has a strong background in San Shou and it showed
every time Carruthers went into the clinch. It was difficult for Tran
to forget his San Shou training as he has over 30 fights in San Shou. Nicely
placed sweeps and even a hip throw were used. Carruthers weathered a
very strong round one by Tran (in which Carruthers was given a
standing eight). As the fight progressed Carruthers was not to back
down and kept the pressure on. By round three Carruthers appeared to
have figured out his opponent but it was too late in the scoring of the match.
Bruce Tran was to win the decision unanimously while also proving
he is a very skilled athlete. Carruthers showed heart to the nth dgree.

assorted martial arts and IKF Point Kickboxing divisions but we are appreciative
for the opportunity to produce our full contact show and feel that the fans and

show why the sport deserves to be at the top of the entertainment industry! We

identical record as Pryor. It's clear that this will be a great fight
and both men will have to dig deep because the stakes are high as the winner
will be a new IKF World Champion and begin

JUST SOMETHING TO
THINK ABOUT...
THE BRICK
A young and successful executive was traveling down a
neighborhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for
kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he
saw something.
As his car passed, no children appeared. Instead, a brick
smashed into the Jag's side door! He slammed on the brakes and backed the Jag
back to the spot where the brick had been thrown.
The angry driver then jumped out of the car, grabbed the
nearest kid and pushed him up against a parked car shouting, "What was that
all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing? That's a new car
and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?"
The young boy was apolo-getic. "Please, mister...please, I'm sorry but I
didn't know what else to do," He pleaded. "I threw the brick because
no one else would stop..."
With tears dripping down his face and off his chin, the youth
pointed to a spot just around a parked car. "It's my brother, "he
said. "He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't
lift him up."
Now sobbing, the boy asked the stunned executive, "Would
you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too
heavy for me."
Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly
swelling lump in his throat. He hurriedly lifted the handi-capped boy back into
the wheelchair, then took out a linen handkerchief and dabbed at the fresh
scrapes and cuts.
A quick look told him everything was going to be okay. "Thank
you and may God bless you," the grateful child told the stranger. Too shook
up for words, the man simply watched the boy! push his wheelchair-bound brother
down the sidewalk toward their home.
It was a long, slow walk back to the Jaguar. The damage was
very noticeable, but the driver never bothered to repair the dented side door.
He kept the dent there to remind him of this message:
"Don't go through life so fast
that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention!"

"The City of Sacramento CA may be losing their
Pro Basketball Team ( Kings ) but there will still be a lot of entertainment for
sports fans in the Sacramento area!"
Johnny
Davis regarding his Kickboxing promotions in the area.
Although not confirmed, it does indeed seem apparent that the
Sacramento Kings
Basketball team is
leaving the city of Sacramento (CA) This being said, other sports like
IKF Muay Thai / Kickboxing is looking to
get their share of the diluted fan base of the Kings.
Thunder Valley Casino located in
Lincoln, CA and one of the premier casinos in the state will be the location of
the next IKF Muay Thai Kickboxing
Championship promoted by Rocklin's AK Promotions Company on Saturday, April
30th, 2011.
AK
Promotions has been promoting several successful shows in the
area in the past two years. Crowds have been packing ballrooms and other fight
venues to watch one of the greatest contact sports in the world...Kickboxing! Johnny Davis, President of
AK Promotions
notes that " its been a long time coming and finally getting a venue
like Thunder Valley Casino to allow Kickboxing events is a sure advancement. We
are constantly up against other sports and are looking forward showing off the
talent of our kickboxing community. Plans are to produce a dynamite show for all
to see on April 30th! Some of the best fighters in the country will be on the
card and those in the audience should get ready for a real treat!" says
Davis.
Approximately 15 Fights will be on the card including IKF Welterweight Muay Thai Champion Daniel "Hitman"
Hodges of Rocklin, CA who will be defending his IKF
West Cost Muay Thai title against tough Josh San Diego of San Jose, CA.
Other locals slated to fight are Rich Davis and Sean
Cronin of Rocklin. Additionally, IKF
United States Champion Jon "The Hawk" Pryor of
Sacramento who has defeated almost everyone in his division will be stepping up
for a long awaited IKF World Title fight
against undefeated top contender sporting a record of 8-0
Armin Safiari
presently residing in Dublin, CA.
Two Time IKF Champion
TJ Arcangle
of San Francisco, CA may have the toughest fight of his career against another
two time IKF Champion
Roberto Morales
of Elk Grove. Plus, 265lbs Manuel
Mancha of Fresno / Elk Grove CA will be battling 6'8"
Xavier Vigney
of Vallejo, CA for the IKF Super
Heavyweight California Championship.
Newcomer, Ed
Abosolo of Vallejo will be taking on
Aleksander Naumaski
of San Jose for a IKF CA Light
Middleweight Title. The $40 general and $50 Ringside tickets will be a great
bargain for the action happening at
Thunder
Valley April 30th. Fight fans will get a chance to get up
close and personal and see for themselves why IKF
Muay Thai / Championship Kickboxing is the "dark horse" of
contact sports!
AK Promotions
plans to continue to bring exciting kickboxing action to the area with another
grand show planned for Friday, July 1st at the Doubletree
Hotel in Sacramento to kick off the July 4th weekend. With the
Las Vegas atmosphere complete with special lighting, great drinks and food with
a taste of entertainment from the Inferno Dance
Team out of Sacramento and not to mention great fights, one hopes
that Thunder Valley Casino could
become a permanent home for such events. The show is in part sponsored by Norcal
Beverage of Loomis, CA, distributors of Budweiser Beer and The
Rocklin Kickboxing and Boxing Club.

Reece Rowell (Aveley, England, 9-2, 84.2kg, 5'10",11-05-89,
Steve Kerridge, 00447958037950) VS
Gezim Wihaj (Dagenham, England, 8-3, 81.5kg, 5'10", 16-04-91,
Joe Wharwood TBC)
- This was a solid encounter between two excellent fighters. Rowell,
an accomplished full contact fighter came in as slight underdog, with Wihaj
being the more experienced in International rules. The early rounds were a
mixture of feeling out and trying tactics but it didn't take long before Rowell
began off-loading his trademark bombs with fast and furious punch combinations.
Wihaj returned with punches but they lacked the power to trouble Rowell.
However his low kicks began to tell quite early as Rowell's lead leg
began to colour up. By the 4th round it was Wihaj who was taking the low
kicks as Rowell found success by landing kicks to the inside and out
following punch combinations. One such combination in the 6th saw Wihaj
limping and Rowell went in for the finish. Although saved by the bell,
the Wihaj corner made absolutely the correct decision in retiring their
fighter on the stool. An excellent win for Reece Rowell who looks very
comfortable under International Rules.
WINNER: Reece Rowell by Corner Retirement 1:51
Round 6.
- Gezim Wihaj receives 30 day medical suspension
until 1st May 2011.
- IKF Pro
MTR/K1 English Light Welterweight Title
Ronnie Harris (Rochester, England, 7-2-2, 63.9kg,
5'11", 02-02-78, Steve Gladstone 00447979960087)
VS Sam Ward (Cheshum, England,
6-1-2, 64.4kg, 5'8", 24-5-85, Ashley Gettings 00447921812495)
- These two evenly matched warriors gave us an excellent display with two
contrasting styles that were equally effective. An even first round made way for
a lively 2nd which saw Ward throw non-stop kicks and punches. But it was
Harris who controlled the action, landing with the more effective shots,
especially knee strikes on the inside. The 3rd round was more of the same with
Ward throwing plenty of leather but still lacking the accuracy. But by
the 4th Harris began to lose his way a little as Ward continued
at the same pace, now connecting with effective punches. The 5th saw Ward
with the bit between his teeth and he went for a finish. But Harris,
despite not really being in any trouble, needed to use all of his skills to stay
in the contest until the final bell. Both camps claimed victory and after a
double check of the scorecards the contest was declared a draw. This result was
unfortunate but highlighted a fantastic contest that needs a winner. Therefore
IKF UK are in the process of negotiating a
re-match between these two great fighters.
RESULT: Split Decision Draw 49-48, 47-48, 48-48.
- IKF Pro
MTR/K1 Southern Area Super Welterweight Title
Paul Benson (Aveley, England, 4-1-1, 68.8kg, 5'7",
09-07-81, Steve Kerridge, 00447958037950) VS
Dan Shortman (Eltham, England, 5-4-3, 66.5kg, 5'8", 14-02-83,
Steve Gladstone 00447979960087)
- This was a short lived an bad tempered affair that was full of incident.
Within 30 seconds of the first bell Benson delivered a strong low kick
that landed in the groin area of Shortman, who fell to the canvas. The
shot was accidental and Shortman was given time to recover after
insisting that he wanted to continue. As the action continued Shortman
almost immediately complained of liniment oil in his eyes and the action stopped
again so that his face could be cleaned and Benson re-checked for
excessive oil (which was not found). The action resumed and it was
entertaining with a good variety from both men. A solid punch from Benson
had Shortman in trouble and the following combination sent him to the
canvas. Benson followed through with a head kick as Shortman was
falling but it scraped past making minimal contact. Once again Shortman
complained but the referee quite rightly took up the count. Shortman
just made it and was saved by the bell. Coming out for the second Benson
was straight into action and after another standing count the Shortman
corner threw in the towel.
Shortman protested to his corner and the officials and stormed out of
the ring without waiting for the announcement.
Paul Benson, who had conducted himself well throughout was declared the
new champion.
WINNER: Paul Benson by corner retirement 0:34 of
round 2.
- Dan Shortman receives 30 day medical suspension
until 1st May 2011
- IKF
Amateur FCR Southern Area WOMEN'S Light Welterweight Title
Jody
Blunt (Crawley, England, 5-4, 63.0kg, 5'4", 31-03-80, Greig
Bradbury 00447789761152) VS Danielle
Kudmany (Fulham, England, 9-3, 64.0kg, 5'4", 24-10-84, Dennis
Maycock TBC)
- This was a competitive and well matched title contest between two classic
kickboxers. Throughout you had to enjoy the skills of Blunt but they
were not effective enough against the more aggressive tactics of Kudmany.
Each round was very close and there was a part of you that wanted to give due
credit to Blunt. Her kicks and punches flowed and her footwork was a joy
to watch. But Kudmany found a way to nullify all of this and score with
almost every shot she threw. The beauty of her work was that, although not that
pretty to watch, it was effective. Her defence was rock solid and she had an
excellent variety of kicks and punches. You could have argued that Blunts
skills deserved a round or two on the cards but at the final bell she knew the
result before it was announced. Today she didn't quite do enough, or more to
the point Kudmany effectively prevented her from doing so with quality
tactics and a high work rate. Congratulations to the new champion Danielle
Kudmany.
WINNER: Danielle Kudmany by unanimous decision
49-48, 49-47, 50-45.
- IKF
Amateur MTR (Jnr) British Junior Featherweight Title
Evan Jays (Basildon, London, 16-2, 33.0kg, 4'3",

Ruegg (Bournemouth, England, 15-4, 32.8kg, 4'4", 06-04-00, Danny
Ruegg 01202 246509)
- This contest was expected to be explosive and it was, for all the right
reasons. These two had met before with Ruegg being disqualified for
excessive head contact ( in a no head contact contest). This time around
it was a different story with both fighters showing skills and maturity beyond
their tender years. The variety was a joy to watch with clean and effective
clinchwork and accurate low kicks making up much of the contest. Both fighters
were also effective with their catch kick takedowns but it was Jays who
shone a little brighter over the duration. Any stray shots were met with
respect from both fighters and the audience enjoyed every moment of this worthy
title contest. At the final bell the belt went to Evan Jays but Mace
Ruegg also went away with the respect of everyone in the building. We look
forward to seeing both fighters in action again.
WINNER: Evan Jays by unanimous decision 50-46,
49-46, 50-47

The Top Pro promoted IKF show in
Kilkennys Ormonde Hotel was another great evening of full contact kickboxing
which featured no less than 15 exciting fights including one low kick bout, one
pro rules bout and an IKF 5 Nations Title
bout. Promoter Mick Bland did a good on the matchmaking as only four
fights failed to go the distance and the event also had a charity angle with
several guys getting their heads shaved in aid of Breast Cancer research.
The semi main event featured former IKF
Amateur Middleweight Champion Myles Price making his Pro Kickboxing
debut over four rounds against the very durable Simon Alvey from
Wicklow. This fight went the distance with Price taking a unanimous
points victory.
IKF All Ireland Champion Ann Marie
Bergin was the main event and she took on the unbeaten English fighter Claire
Mills from Lincolnshire for the vacant IKF
5 Nations crown. This was a closely fought contest but Mills had never
been past 3 rounds and Ann Marie grinded her down in the 4th and 5th
when she brought her into the trenches so to speak and took the nod by split
decision to become the new IKF Ladies 5
Nations Super lightweight Champion.

MANDATE
The
Use of Dual Arch Mouth Guards!
Amateur Competitors that fight on
IKF -
ISCF -
ISKA and
KICK - KIAMA
sanctioned fight events are required to use "DUAL ARCH" mouth
guards.
However, not every fighter has wanted to follow this safety
regulation. For this reason, we have posted these mandates again, for the safety
of the fighters, to review again why such a recommendation is for the safety of
the fighters.
MOUTHPIECE - MUST BE SUPPLIED BY FIGHTER
For
Added Safety, ALL Fighters to wear a DUAL ARCH Mouthguard.
Mandatory For All
Fighters In All Rule Styles.
Must be supplied by each fighter.
Must be
FORM FITTING and remain in place when a fighter opens their mouth.
The IKF was the first
organization to endorse and recommend the Brain-Pad
mouthguards for all sanctioned events. Back in January of 1999 when the Brain-Pad
was known as the WIPSS Jaw-Joint
Protector, Steve Fossum (IKF's President) recognized the
importance of protecting the jaw in combat arts and gave the product the
official IKF Endorsement. He has been
promoting the use of this protection ever since and now it will be mandatory for
all combatants, who fight in IKF &
ISCF MMA
sanctioned events, to wear the Brain-Pad
mouthguard.
Brain-Pad is a company
that manufactures the bi-molar mouth piece that has been proven to reduce stem
concussion from lower jaw impact and used by many of the contact sport
communities. When put into place, Brain-Pads
slightly shift the jaw bone down and forward to stabilize the jaw in place so
that upon impact, the jaw bone won't move up and into the base of the skull and
TMJ. It also allows participants to clench and breathe through the mouth,
protects both upper and lower teeth and fits over braces.
Brain-Pads is important
in fighting sports such as MMA, Muay Thai, & Boxing, because it has long
been known that the jaw presents the optimal target for knocking out opponents.
Brain-Pads are a revolutionary piece of
protective gear that simply reposition the lower jaw down and slightly forward
and locks it in a safety position so that impacts from sports keep the end of
the jaw from getting slammed into the base of the skull and brain.
Brain-Pads is the
official mouthguard of the IKF, ISKA, ISCF, and KICK/KIAMA. Many
more Kickboxing, Muay Thai and MMA organizations are considering the same
mandate. These are the first mandates for any type of mouth guard in history.
The major issue is protecting the Jaw where studies show it's the most
vulnerable area in the body because of it's direct access to the brain via the
TMJ. They recognize that upper only mouthguards offer no protection for the jaw
and TMJ.
Brain-Pads mouth guards
are available at leading athletic retailers including Sports Authority stores
nationwide, and retail between $7 and $30 based on the model. Please visit the
Brain-Pad website to view the official mandates.

FROM March 3rd, 2010
Brain-Pad
Selected as the Official Dual Arch Mouth Guard for the
International
Kickboxing Federation and International Sport Combat Federations
First
mandates passed for Dual Arch mouth guard usage in combat sports
The International Kickboxing
Federation, a leading kickboxing sanctioning body, and the International Sport Combat Federation, the first and
largest mixed martial arts sanctioning body for pro and amateur MMA, have passed
safety requirements that will require the use of Dual Arch Jaw Joint
Protective mouth guards by all combatants who fight in sanctioned events.
This represents one of the first athletic mandates for the use of Jaw Joint
protective mouth guards by athletes. The IKF
and ISCF, which have thousands of athletes
worldwide, selected Brain-Pad® as the official mouth
guard for its members. Dual Arch mouth guard usage will become mandatory for all
IKF and ISCF
competitors by late, 2010.
Brain-Pad is a line of affordable athletic mouth guards
using patented technology and a dual arch-protection system. The Brain-Pad mouth
guards are tested and proven to reduce impact energy at the base of the skull
and brain by keeping the lower jaw stabilized in a position that decreases the
likelihood of basal skull concussions and TMJ (jaw joint) injuries.
"We have always taken the measures necessary to ensure
the safety of our competitors," says Steve Fossum,
President/CEO of International Fight Sports, the parent company of IKF Kickboxing, ISCF MMA
and several other Fight Sport Organizations and companies. "Impact to
the jaw and subsequent head injuries pose major medical concerns for our members
and we believe this mandate will ensure that better precautions are taken. Many
of our athletes have been relying on Brain-Pad mouth guards for dual arch
protection and to stabilize the jaw during competition. We feel strongly in the
performance and protection benefits of these mouth guards and are proud to set
an example to the sports community by passing this safety requirement. We are
also pleased to see that ISKA and KICK International have now also agreed to do
the same with their event participants in 2010 which brings unification to the
new safety requirement."
Unlike traditional single arch mouth guards that offer
protection for either the upper or lower teeth, Brain-Pad is a dual
arch, bi-molar, mouth guard. The Brain-Pad technology repositions the
lower jaw while protecting both the upper and lower teeth. The jaw is stabilized
into a neutral position, creating a safety space that reduces the risk of jaw
impact concussions and TMJ injuries. When put into place, the Brain-Pad® mouth guards also open the airway in the throat 100
percent, allowing users to breathe better and gain a competitive advantage.
"This mandate is a truly landmark decision for combat
sports," says Joe Manzo, President of Brain-Pad. "We
have been supplying Brain-Pad mouth guards, designed to protect that vulnerable
jaw joint and base of the skull, to IKF and ISCF members since 1999 and commend
the organization for taking proactive measures in the protection of its
athletes. As more states propose concussion bills and discuss new regulations
for better concussion prevention, we expect that more sports organizations will
follow suit with similar mandates."
BOXING
To
increase the safety of boxing, the World Boxing Association strongly recommends
use of WIPSS jaw joint protection and takes the front line of defense against
jaw joint and brain base injuries.
Gilberto Mendoza, WBA President
"The
IFBA gives its full endorsement of the Brain Pad because it is far superior than
conventional upper mouthguards but more importantly gives true protection to the
TMJ area and the brain, the primary safety concern for our organization."
Jackie
Kallen, IFBA Commissioner
"The Brain-Pad is the finest
appliance I have ever seen for the protection of internal head injuries."
Dr.
Erno Kiss, Medical Director Canadian Amateur Boxing Assoc.

AMATEUR MUAY THAI WOMEN'S FLYWEIGHT WORLD TITLE Monique
Travis Kennesaw, Georgia, USA, 8-0/1, 2010 IKF
World Classic MTR Bantamweight Champion VS Tecia Torres Tamarac, Florida, USA,
9-2/1, 2010 IKF World Classic IR Bantamweight
Champion
One of the
most anticipated fights of the night, these two came to bang, and did nothing
less. First round Torres came out hard on the offensive landing a few
clean shots on Moe. Moe countered everything thrown and held up the
center of the ring for a majority of the first round.
Second round both ladies turned it up, multiple hit
combinations, and each fighter countering constantly. Moe started to
sweep Torres with every kick, putting her on the canvas numerous times.
The round ended with a string exchange in the clinch both fighters trading
knees.
The third and forth round had a steady exchange of strikes
with neither fighter showing a sign of gassing after four rounds and still
turning it up. Moe continued to sweep Torres and won every
battle in the clinch. It would be an understatement to say one of Moe's
strengths is in the clinch. It is definitely her world.
The fight ended with the crowd on their feet and both
ladies trading. In the end Moe Travis won the bout and another belt for
her collection, while improving her record to 9-0.
WINNER: Monique "Moe
" Travis by Decision.

Results from the
other Muay Thai bouts of the night shown below:
- Robel Kebede VS Jade Kamchamnam
Right out of the gate some good back and forth. Both fighters throwing
kicks low and high, both countering the other looking for the right time to
strike. This fight was very active in the clinch, with both fighters landing
solid knees and lots of body shots. The fight went all 3 rounds with no lull in
action what so ever both fighters gave it their all until the bell. WINNER: Robel Kebede by decision.
- Erik Castro VS Josh Downing
Both fighters met in the middle of the ring testing the others defenses
working faints and counters. Downing moved about the ring trying to coax
Castro into his reach. Instead he left his front leg open for many heavy
attacks from Castro. Lots of feeling out in the first round with Castro
landing a number of shots to Downings leg. In the second round Downing
came out with a few awkward taekwondo style combinations and landed a few
strikes. Castro continued to work on Downings legs and work into
the clinch. The round ended with both fighters battling for the round. At the
start of the third Downing came out heavy again, but Castro
continued to work the leg. Lots of clinch work in the middle of the ring. Both
fighters battled for the round knowing they each needed it to win. In the end
Downing took home a split decision to the crowds disapproval. WINNER: Josh Downing by Split Decision.
- Colleen Louima VS Mary Matia
First round Mary came out chin down swinging BIG! Colleen
was caught a little off gaurd and took a few clean shots. A knott is very
visible by mid round. A lot of striking in the first round from both fighters,
with very little missing their target. To start the second round Mary
stepped in with a vengeance and continued to land hard clean shots to the face
of Colleen. Colleen started to let her legs go and put together her
combos, even more action than the first round and both ladies still had plenty
of gas. In the last round if you had just taken your seat, you would have
thought it was the first. Nice and tight combos with most strikes meeting their
target. Mary started to get the best of Colleen and relentlessly
started to push forward. In the end Mary Matia won the bout by decision
and the crowd on their feet the entire time. WINNER:
Mary Matia by Decision.
