Don't Live with Regrets!
The Countdown is on for the Inaugural
IKF East Coast Muay Thai / Kickboxing Classic

October 18th, 19th and 20th- Dillon, South Carolina, USA, South of the Border Convention Center

As the inaugural 2013 IKF East Coast Muay Thai / Kickboxing Classic is in its final Deadline before Oct. 10th, one is reminded of the words of so many fighters and trainers who wished so badly that they had registered for the IKF West Coast Classic in 2011 in Sacramento, California. They stood at ringside watching over 100 matches during the weekend that presented some of the best action-packed bouts ever in the area! The awards were excellent and the accommodations very satisfying on a Thanksgiving weekend…one can only say this event went off with great success with a total of 186 registered fighters! (IKF East Coast Classic Championship Belt Left)

Having AK Promotions and the IKF doing constant promotions in the State of California in the previous years had a lot to do with the initial success of the West Coast Classic. We still feel that there is a residual of kickboxing enthusiasts from days gone by. Some who have tried the hand of MMA due to its popularity and intrique, but still love the stand-up fighting styles of sport Muay Thai and Kickboxing. These individuals are just waiting on more fight opportunities.

Moreover, wedged in small towns across the Southeast there must be thousands of talented men, women and children waiting for their chance to showcase their Muay Thai and Kickboxing ability to the thousands of fans waiting to witness. The Time is Here and Now!

Whether events have been readily available are not… is not the issue. The real point of this is that there is a quality Muay Thai and Kickboxing event coming to South-Eastern USA. Fighters are coming from areas like Costa Rico, Puerto Rico, Canada and so many states across the United States to challenge YOU to see what you GOT! BUT…Will you answer the call? (See IKF East Coast Classic Novice Championship Cup at Right)

As well, if you are a Mixed Martial Arts fighter wanting to better your stand-up skills….this will be the place to do just that as well!

AK Promotions is in the final 12 days of registration and although its steady, they would love to see more of you register for this exciting tournament! Its going to happen and AK Promotions plans to have a first class event and nice accommodations at the South of the Border Mexican-Themed Tourist Site for the fighters and fans attending that weekend. For those of you that have worked with an AK Promotions - IKF sanctioned event in the past, you know we try and do it right. Spread the word to your friends and fellow clubs to get on the train, plane or boat, but no matter how, get here for the first IKF East Coast Muay Thai Kickboxing Classic….The first of what plans to be many more with your support.

AK Promotions would like to Thanks those of you who have placed the event poster on your websites, facebooks pages etc. Even if you are not attending, your peers might want to!

Results From Pete Foley's
"FIGHTNIGHT"
September 21st, 2013 - Galway, Ireland

The Galway Black Dragon Kickboxing Club promoted a great night of kickboxing on Saturday night in the Menlo Park Hotel. The venue provided a classy atmosphere along with some fantastic fights. The show kicked off with 3 junior light contact kickboxing bouts which was an all Galway affair between Black Dragon & AR Kickboxing who had a great support there. AR took two wins out of the three and have some cracking juniors coming through.

Fawad Noonan and Cian Mc Cormacs fights were cancelled on Saturday morning. The two were scheduled to fight two teenagers from Churchfield Thaiboxing in Cork but the fights were pulled with no reason or explanation from the Cork Camp just hours before the show started. Because of this the two boys hopped in and did a low kick exhibition bout.

Gerry King once again put the fight fans in a frenzy with his spectacular and ever entertaining entrance. Gerry may be a showman but he also proved he can fight, winning in fine style against a strong, fit Kilkenny fighter Eoghan Curtain. Gerry was originally matched with a Churchfield Thai Boxer from Cork but once again they never showed up, with no explanation or even an excuse. Thankfully Kilkenny took the bout on short notice and Gerry had his day in the Ring.

Liam Wells from the UK had a class victory over Dublins Paul Gallagher. British Champion Patrick Halforty from TKO in Kent defeated Irish Champ Brett Egan by TKO in round two with a cracking right hand to lift the vacant IKF 5 Nations Cruiserweight Title.

Catherine Cullinan put in an amazing performance against a determined Sarah Kiely from Dungarvan and won in fine style. James Ward was in Flying form as he stopped Michael Coyle from Derry in spectacular fashion with textbook kicks and punches that came from every concieveable angle. Adam Keane from Tuam and Tullamores David Rusinak had a fantastic tear up in one of the most exciting fights of the night which was an over and back war that ended in a draw. This was an eliminator fight to see who goes forward to fight Donegals Stephen Doherty for the IKF Irish Super Welterweight Title later in the year. Because of the draw, both Keane and Rusinak will have to do it again. Next time it may be held in Kilkenny in October as Kilkennys top coach & promoter Mick Bland from the highly respected Top Pro Gym jumped at the chance to put on the rematch. The super rematch will be scheduled for his upcoming event in the 4 Star Ormonde Hotel in ye fair city. Doherthy won the first eliminator fight last week in Carlow when he knocked out former ISKA champion Darren Cummins from Dublin and is looking strong.

IKF European Champion Gary Manogue took a unanimous victory against a teak tough Gareth Evans who is the current British No. 1 Seed. Once again this fight had the fans on their feet and proved to be a valuable four rounds against a pedigree opponent for Manogue ahead of his upcoming IKF World Title fight on December 7th in Leisureland.

Bryan Merrigan gave a master class in K-1 in the main event when he successfully defended his IKF All Ireland title to Cork Thaiboxer Dave Walsh. Walsh certainly didn't come to Galway to make up the numbers. In typical Muay Thai Fashion, Walsh dominated in the clinch and used good knee strikes. Not to be outdone, Merrigan landed some excellent low kicks and huge right hand bombs on Walshs chin. These were so hard that they would have knocked a horse out along with some classic head kicks. All credit to Dave Walsh. He can certainly take a punch. Merrigan checked all of Walshs low kick attacks like a seasoned pro and dropped him like a stone in the 5th round for an 8 count. At the final bell he was announced as winner and still the IKF All Ireland Super Welterweight K-1 Champion. Bryan will also have a big fight announcement soon as he will fight alongside his stablemate Gary Manogue on a super show in Leisureland, Galway on December 7th.

Black Dragon and the IKF would like to say a huge thanks to all fighters, coaches, officials, glove runners, medical staff, Dr. Maura Grummell, Menlo Park Hotel management & staff, fight fans, MC Alan, DJ Pa and indeed anyone who helped make the night such a success. Now... Time to start promoting the "MEGA" show in Leisureland on December 7th, which has already been promised TV coverage. Onwards & upwards!

Results From Larry Brennan's
"Chaos In Carlow"
September 14th, 2013 - Carlow, Ireland

Larry Brennans IKF show "Chaos In Carlow" was a resounding success for the likable coach/promoter of the Carlow Black Dragon Kickboxing Gym. The event attracted clubs from all over Ireland. The show started at 7.30pm and was wrapped up by 10.15pm. Everyone was home at a respectable hour. This was Larrys first ever promotion but you would think he was doing them all his life. He recieved lots of help and advice from many coaches and officials throughout the IKF and soaked up the knowledge to good effect as everything was on cue. As usual, all Judges and Referees were completely neutral to all the fights and a full report & results including Medical Suspensions have been sent to various media outlets that include the Black Dragon Facebook page and all promoters and organisations throughout Ireland. We believe it it vital to share information to help keep fighters safe.

Results From Adrenalin Fight Nights
"ADRENALIN RUSH"
September 7th, 2013 - Swansea, England

  1. ISCF Pro MMA Welsh Bantamweight Title
    Joe Orrey (Barry, Wales, 8-8, 61.2kg, 5'7", 02-14-87, Richard Shore, 00447980224556)
    VS Phil Raeburn (Swansea, Wales, 6-3, 61.2kg, 5'7",06-16-82 , Craig Harris, 00447546410199)
WINNER: Phil Raeburn by Guillotine Choke Submission 0:47 Round 1.
This was an explosive encounter with neither man looking to do overtime. Orrey came in as favorite with Raeburn being the last minute replacement. However, it was Raeburn who was on fire. Following an initial trade both men went to ground striking both ways. Raeburn was lightening quick and moved sharply into position for the guillotine choke, forcing the submission. Quick, explosive and all action entertainment!

  2. IKF FCR Women's British Flyweight Title
    Beverly Mainwaring (Neath, Wales, 7-3-1, 53.1kg, 5'1", 08-10-82, Kelly Mainwaring, 00447795271676)
    VS Gemma Jones (Bridgend, Wales, 3-3, 53.1kg, 5'4", 10-20-86, Jeff Copp, 00447581509488)
WINNER: Beverly Mainwaring by Unanimous Decision 48-47, 49-46, 49-46.
A nicely fought, even money battle that saw the more experienced Mainwaring take control of the first two rounds with great kicking skills. She coupled this with follow through punches that Jones had no initial answer to. The third round saw Jones get into her stride but Mainwaring was still flying. Both gitls had similar styles and it was clear that they had come from extensive "Points Fghting" background. With an even money third round it was up to Jones to step up a gear, and she did so. She dominated the round with Mainwaring looking as though she had run out of ideas. There were glimpses of her brilliance from the early rounds but it was not enough with Jones clearly taking the round. With the 3rd on a knife edge Jones needed to dominate the last if there was to be any chance of a win. Mainwaring found her mojo again and the final round was a battle. Again one which could have gone either way. As it ended the scores were totalled with Beverly Mainwaring took a well earned decision and the title belt!

However, let it be noted that this is the first IKF East Coast Classic and what we are finding is that many are not familiar with the registration process. For this reason, a lot of time is going into educating clubs on the process and the importance of complying with the deadlines. Also, we did not put large penalties after each deadline "THIS YEAR" in order to try and entice more participation as well as make it as easy as possible for those who want to enter. So, we are hoping that you will take advantage of this low penalty and get your registration(s) in as quickly as possible. This will allow us to properly get the awards needed for the event in a timely fashion as well as better organize the event.

Remember, the FINAL DEADLINE IS October 10th, the week before the actual event…This is only for divisions that are still open. So the number of fighters in your bracket may change the final week prior to the event so just prepare for a full bracket of 8 and you can't go wrong!

We WILL NOT change a bracket that will leave a fighter without a match.

We recognize that we will have to make some adjustments next year to assure we get as many registrations as early as possible. For now, it is what it is…some get ready for a great event!

What Trainers and Fighters need to know is that by supporting this exciting Kickboxing event, you are giving you and your team great opportunities to participate in larger events in the near future on the East Coast. Your support or lack of support signals to the Kickboxing community that you and your gym may not be interested in Muay Thai & Kickboxing Competition. A decision to support this "OPEN INVITATION" Tournament tells the rest of the world that we are all serious about making our sport a major contact sport in this country as it is in many other countries.

We hope that you take advantage of this extended Open Division deadline and get those registrations in ASAP!

Former WBO Heavyweight Champion
Tommy Morrison
Passes Away At Age 44

January 2, 1969 – September 1, 2013

Former WBO heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison passed away on Sunday evening at the age of 44. ESPN's Elizabeth Merrill first reported the news on Monday afternoon, noting that the once-great boxer died in a hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

Morrison was born in Gravette, Arkansas. He was an Irish-American who was raised in Delaware County, Oklahoma. Since Morrison's older brother and two uncles were boxers, Morrison's father urged him to begin boxing locally at the age of ten. At the age of 13, he used a fake ID and entered fifteen "toughman" contests (the minimum age for contestants was 21). He later told The New York Times that he lost only one of these matches.

In 1988, Morrison won the Regional Heavyweight Title – Kansas City Golden Gloves from Donald Ellis and advanced to the National Golden Gloves in Omaha, Nebraska, where he lost a split decision to Derek Isaman. Two weeks later, Morrison took part in the Western Olympic trials in Houston, Texas winning the Heavyweight Title and garnishing the "Most Outstanding Fighter" of the tournament. Two weeks after that at the Olympic Trials, held in Concord, California, Morrison lost a split decision to Ray Mercer, who would go on to win the gold medal at the Seoul Olympics. Morrison's combined professional and amateur record is 343–24–1, with 315 wins by knockout.

Morrison started his professional boxing career on November 10, 1988, with a first-round knockout of William Muhammad in New York City. Three weeks later, he scored another first-round knockout. In 1989, Morrison had 19 wins and no losses, 15 by knockout.

In 1989, actor Sylvester Stallone observed one of Morrison's bouts. Stallone arranged a script reading and cast Morrison in the movie Rocky V as Tommy "The Machine" Gunn, a young and talented protege of the retired Rocky Balboa. Originally an admirer of Rocky, Gunn's successes led him to goad Rocky into a street fight.

In 1991, Morrison, already the recipient of much television exposure, won fights against opponents James Quick Tillis and former world champion Pinklon Thomas. He was given an opportunity to face fellow undefeated fighter Ray Mercer, the WBO title holder in a Pay Per View card held on October 18, 1991. Morrison suffered the first loss of his career, losing by 5th round knockout. Morrison had six wins in 1992, including fights with Art Tucker and Joe Hipp, who would later become the first Native American to challenge for the world heavyweight title. In the Hipp fight, held June 19, 1992, Morrison was suffering from what was later discovered to be a broken hand and broken jaw, but rallied to score a knockout in the ninth round. After two wins in 1993, including one over two-time world title challenger Carl "The Truth" Williams, Morrison found himself fighting for the WBO title again, against heavyweight boxing legend George Foreman, who was himself making a comeback. As both men were famed for their punching power, an exciting battle was expected, but Morrison chose to avoid brawling with Foreman and spent the fight boxing from long range. Morrison was able to hit and move effectively in this manner, and after a closely contested bout he won a unanimous 12-round decision and the WBO title.

Morrison's first title defense was scheduled against Mike Williams, but when Williams withdrew on the night of the fight, Tim Tomashek stood in as a replacement. Although Tomashek had been prepared to fight as a backup plan, some news reports created the impression that he had just been pulled out of the crowd. The WBO later rescinded their sanctioning of this fight due to Tomashek's lack of experience. Almost immediately, talks of a fight with WBC champion Lennox Lewis began, but were halted when virtually unknown Michael Bentt upset Morrison in his next bout. Bentt knocked Morrison down three times, and the fight was stopped in the first round in front of a live HBO Boxing audience. Morrison recovered by winning three bouts in a row in 1994, but his last fight of the year, against Ross Puritty, ended with a draw.

Morrison won three fights in 1995 before meeting former #1 contender Razor Ruddock. Ruddock dropped Morrison to his knees in the first round, but Morrison recovered to force a standing count in round two and compete on even terms for five rounds. In the sixth round, Ruddock hurt Morrison with a quick combination, but just as it seemed Morrison was in trouble, he countered with a tremendous hook that put Ruddock on the canvas. Ruddock regained his feet, but Morrison drove him to the ropes and showered him with an extended flurry of blows. Just as the bell was about to sound, the referee stepped in and declared Morrison the winner by TKO.

The much-anticipated fight with Lewis, who had also lost his world championship, finally took place following the Ruddock match. Morrison was knocked out in the sixth round.

Scheduled to fight against Arthur Weathers, the Nevada Athletic Commission determined that Morrison had tested positive for HIV. The Commission suspended Morrison from boxing in Nevada. Several days later, Morrison's physician administered a test, which was also positive. At a news conference on February 15, 1996, Morrison said he had contracted HIV because of a "permissive, fast and reckless lifestyle". Morrison stated that he would "absolutely" never fight again.

At another news conference on September 19, 1996, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Morrison announced he wished to fight "one last time" when he could find an opponent, the proceeds of which would benefit his KnockOut AIDS Foundation. A spokesperson for the Oklahoma Professional Boxing Advisory Board said Morrison would probably not be permitted to fight in Oklahoma because of his Nevada suspension.

To treat his infection, Morrison said he took antiretroviral medication, which reduced his viral load to almost undetectable levels.

In 2006, Morrison said his HIV tests had been false positives. The Nevada commission's medical advisory board reviewed Morrison's 1996 test results and concluded they were "ironclad and unequivocal." Morrison said he tried to get a copy of the original test result but was unable to do so: "I don't think it ever existed." The Commission said Morrison could "contact the laboratory, and they would immediately release the results to him."

Beginning in 2007, Morrison began fighting again. After passing medical tests in Texas, West Virginia licensed Morrison to fight in the state, and in February 2007 he fought and beat John Castle.

Castle had also been the 2004 IKF/TKO Amateur North American Classic Champion. Castle had won the Amateur title in Orlando Florida, USA on August 15th when he defeated Chuck Baxter of Dubuque, Iowa, USA by split decision 29-28, 28-29 & 29-28. However, Castle had to forfeit the Amateur title because on November 4th, 2004 it was discovered that he had "THREE" Professional matches before the North American Classic "AMATEUR" Tournament. He made his Pro Boxing debut on October 7th 2003 against Damian Mansfield at the 8 Second Saloon in Indianapolis, Indiana winning by TKO at 55 seconds into the second round. Since then he has won all 3 of his Pro Boxing bouts. Baxter's loss was made a win and Castle was given no credit for his win. This took Castle's record from 11-0 to 10-0. Castle made his Pro Kickboxing debut in November, 2004. When he met Morrison his Professional Boxing record was 4-2. The Morrison bout was his last bout.

Morrison tested negative for HIV four times in January 2007. On July 22, 2007, the New York Times reported that Morrison took two HIV tests in 2007 plus a third specifically for the Times. HIV experts reviewed the three tests and concluded that the 1996 result had been a false positive. But ringside doctors expressed doubt, implying that the negative results were not in fact based on Morrison's blood. However, the experts agreed that no one is ever cured of HIV, so if his tests in 2007 showed that he was negative, then he was never infected with HIV. In January 2011, the RACJ, the boxing commission for the province of Quebec, required that Morrison take a supervised HIV test in advance of a scheduled 2011 fight. Morrison declined to take the test because he said it would be the same kind of test administered by Nevada in 1996. Instead, Morrison invited the Quebec commission to attend a public test, but the commission did not come. Morrison stated that if Quebec refused to license him, he would "take the dog and pony show somewhere else."

On September 1, 2013, Morrison died at a hospital in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 44. Although an official cause of death has not been made public, Morrison's wife Trisha told MMADirt.com that he died of "acute respiratory and metabolic acidosis and multiple organ failure." She said Morrison had Miller Fisher Syndrome/Guillain Barre Syndrome.
