MacKenzie Takes IKF Canadian Title By
KNOCKOUT!

IKF Promoter Cassius Sebunyana Segikwiye became the **second Canadian promoter in the last 3 weeks to bring IKF Gold to Canada as he hosted hi FURY V - "Fight Night" event at the Archie Browning Sports Arena in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada's Scott MacKenzie (21-4/11, S: 3-0, AMMA: 1-0) added more IKF gold to his trophy cast this past Friday night, September 14th in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. MacKenzie met up with fellow contender and ISKA North American Kickboxing Champion, Robert Doerksen (13-3) of Victoria British Columbia, Canada. On the line was the vacant IKF Amateur Modified Muay Thai Rules Canadian Middleweight Title (159.1 lbs. - 165 lbs).

MacKenzie was fresh off his second (2015 & 2018) IKF World Classic Tournament Title which he won in August in Orlando Florida. PHOTO.

Early bout stoppages are nothing new for MacKenzie. He had fought three tough opponents on his way to the IKF World Classic title and IN 2 of the bouts, MacKenzie stopped before the scheduled final bell. First up was Steve DeVito of South Palm Beach, Florida, USA who he defeated by TKO at 1:21 of round 2 followed by another stoppage of Michael Young of Davie, Florida, USA by TKO at 1:03 of round 1.

In the Championship bout Bryan Burgos of Bronx, New York, USA (14-6) gave him all he could handle after two bouts the previous day but MacKenzie took the win and the World Classic belt by unanimous decision, 29-28 on all three judges cards.

In Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, that early stoppage magic MacKenzie knows all too well was in full swing. After 3 rounds, MacKenzie lead on all three judges scorecards, 30-26, 29-27 and 29-27. However, in the 4th, MacKenzie stepped it up a gear and Mackenzie dropped Doerksen only 19 seconds into the fourth round. Doerksen wasn't getting up and the referee waived it over as MacKenzie adds another knockout victory to his record and more IKF Gold to his trophy case!

At the end of last month (August 24th) it was Stan Peterec who hosted the "SUMMER SLUGFEST VIII" event that featured the vacant IKF Amateur Modified Muay Thai Rules Welterweight World Title between Greg Lamothe of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada (13-6, 147, 6'1", 12-4-83 - PHOTO) and Jeremy Henry of Detroit, Michigan, USA (10-1/4, AMMA: 1-0/1, 5'10", 1-29-94) This was an all-out Slugfest all right, with both fighters going toe to toe. In the end, they had to go to the British Columbia Athletic Commission judges scorecards. Two of the three judges had Lamothe winning the bout while the third judge had it a draw giving Lamothe the title by majority decision. However the two judges who scored it for Lamothe missed a knockdown score (Scoring the round 10-9 instead of 10-8 for Henry) which would have made the bout a draw. Others questioned the decision overall and there was talk of a rematch. However, Lamothe had made it clear prior to the bout he was turning pro after this fight so the rematch discussion ended. Hopefully we will see Jeremy Henry do battle for the title once again before he too makes the decision to turn Pro.

ABC passes new rules to combat extreme weight cutting in boxing title fights

  • The Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) passed a new proposal that could have a major impact on extreme weight-cutting in the sport of boxing. The proposal past on Tuesday, July 31st, and the new regulations will go into effect on January 1st, 2019. These key details include:
    • Second-day weigh-ins for championship fights, to be held on fight day.

    • Championship participants are not to gain more than 10% of the contracted weight. The champion would be stripped of the title, whereas the challenger would be rendered ineligible to win the title.

    • Reduction in ranking status for first offense. Outright removal from the rankings of the major sanctioning bodies for a full year if they are a repeat offender.

Irelands Whitney Sheppard Captures IKF Amateur World Title
In Close Bout With Germany's Evelyn Gallegos


Once again, IKF Promoter Pete Foley of Ireland put on quite a show at the Clayton Hotel this past Saturday night, September 1st in Galway, Ireland. Along with yet another great show, Foley was equally excited that his fighter came away with a tightly fought (and judged) World title bout which could have went either way in some viewers eyes. "Delighted with our new World Champion Whitney Sheppard" said Foley, "who worked so hard and came up trumps after an all out war with Evelyn Gallegos from Frankfurt who gave it everything from start to finish." Foley went on to say, "Evelyn and coach Gabriel were a pleasure to deal with and we wish them all the best in future ventures."

The event also crowned two new Irish Champs from Foley's club, Alex Fitzpatrick & Corey O Malley who picked up the Low Kick 69.5kg & Full Contact 60kg Titles respectively after two five round battles.

One of Foley's other fighter's Sean Ryan was outskilled by Justin Cannon (Dublin, Ireland, 4-1) who defeated Sean Ryan (Mayo, Ireland, 6-5) by unanimous decision to claim the vacant title, 50-47, 50-45 & 49-46. Although on the losing end, Ryan gave a good account of himself and certainly has a lot more to offer.

Shane Lawless from Athlone took the Lightweight K-1 Belt last night also. Amy Duane had a tough battle with the more experienced Alannah Turner (Kilkenny, Ireland, 3-1-1) who got the nod but Amy learned a lot from the fight. Colm Dunphy (Galway, Ireland, 3-0-1) had a good win in his first "K-1 Rules" style bout after three hard rounds with Gary Mc Mahon (Cavan, Ireland, 0-1) winning by unanimous decision, 29-26, 29-25, 29-25.

With pretty close to identical records, Tyrone Cronin O Brien (Limerick, Ireland, 5-2) and Chris Breen fought as well, a very close bout. in the end, Tyrone defeated Breen (Tipperary, Ireland, 5-2-1) by unanimous decision. 29-28, 29-28, 29-28.

The eight Junior Amateur fighters who opened up the show did everyone proud with Darren Van Strien putting in a great performance along with all the others. These kids are all the future superstars of Kickboxing in Galway and certainly ones to watch out for.

Closing out the event, Cian Mc Cormack (Galway, Ireland, 22-5-2) gave what can only be described as a K-1 masterclass in his career and his best fight against a teak tough French fighter Marvin Bonnemains (France, 26-12-1) who only returned from a month long training camp in Thailand a few days previous in preparation for the fight. In the end Cian Mc Cormack came away with the by unanimous decision, 30-27 on all 3 judges score cards. After the event, Foley said, "Once again, the French team Marvin & Coach Frederick were a pleasure to deal with."

All fighters on the card put up a great show win, lose or draw and all fighters were very respectful to each other and officials etc. In this age where trash talk is creeping in with some fighters trying to be (not very successfully I might add ??) the bad boys and posting immature rubbish on line, it's great to see the sporting aspect and martial arts respect is still very much alive. Huge thanks to The fight fans who were amazing and also the officials, Bobby Nolan, Patrick Ryan, Joe Wilson, Stefan Moriarty, Clodagh Foley, Joe Mc Cormack and Jennifer Baranyai who did a first class job.

at the World Classic was one of the best tournament we have ever had at the IKF World Classic!
