WHERE WERE YOU?
I remember where I was like it was yesterday. My wife Toni and all of us with the IKF had just got done with our 2001 IKF National Kickboxing Tournament in Olath (Kansas City) Kansas. It was Tuesday morning, September 11th, 2001 and I was packing up our office in the hotel conference room... And it all unfolded moment by moment on the TV we had on... We weren't scheduled to leave until the next day but we choose to leave the hotel because all the planes were grounded and all the hotels needed rooms for the stranded passengers. So we decided to drive towards home, away from the city... Over the next few days we saw a different America... From long lines at the gas stations with $6 per gallon prices to people panicked that our country was under attack.. But one thing held true everywhere we went... Our country had come together... And even if for only a short time, our country, for the first time in a long time was United... I can remember it like it was yesterday...

Last Saturday night in Waterford, IKF Promoter and Waterford Kickboxing Supremo Mr Billy O Sullivan pulled off yet another fantastic event in the Cill Barra Sports Complex in Ballybeg. The show started just before 8 PM and was all done by 11.30 PM. 12 Top class, well matched fights including one Eliminator bout and FOUR IKF All Ireland Title fights and two exhibition bouts.

The Eliminator fight featured Kilkenny Top Pro Fighter Sean Rowe who squared off against Limerick Hub warrior Luke Short. This was an all action contest but the Kilkenny man proved too much for Short and the referee called a halt to the action in round 3 due to damage sustained to the Limerick mans leg. Sean Rowe has now earned the right to take on Black Dragon Fighter Dara Mannion for the vacant IKF All Ireland Super Welterweight Title under International Low Kick Rules on 12 October in the Clayton Hotel, Galway. Mannion earned the right when he won the first Eliminator bout on 14 June. This will be one of the main events on the night at the Clash In The Clayton show which will also feature at least two more Title challenges.

Hayleigh Kiely from the well regarded Limerick Hub Gym was on fire when she clinically despatched Double ISKA Champion Sarah Dunne from Mark Casserlys Gym in Dublin for the vacant Ladies IKF All Ireland Lightweight International Rules crown. Dunne certainly proved her warrior status and went the full distance, despite taking some incredible punishment from the Limerick Lass but Kiely reigned supreme and is now undisputed champion. Next up was IKF men's Lightweight Champion Christopher Breen from Tipperary Kickboxing Gym putting his title on the line with a first Defense to Limerick Hub Fighter Tyrone Cronin O'Brien. Both men went at it from the opening bell and it looked like being another classic but O'Brien landed some savage leg kicks and visibly hurt Breen towards the end of the first round and it looked like the writing was on the wall for the proud Tipperary Champion. Round two saw O' Brien targeting the injury and the referee Tony O Donnell called a halt to it and declared the Limerick man the new champion.

Tyrone Cronin O'Brien and Hayleigh Kiely had a fantastic support from the well behaved and extremely vocal, sporting Limerick fans and the dynamic duo certainly gave them their money's worth. These two have done a great job of actively promoting themselves. They come to the table with great support, good sponsors and a fantastic work ethic that shines through in their performances. Other fighters should take note that if you want opportunities in this great sport, you really have to take your career by the scruff of the neck and look for sponsors, gather a fan base, impress the promoters and don't expect to have everything done for you. If you want the big fights, you have to work a little to get them.

Next up we had the vacant Men's IKF Super Middleweight International Rules Title Fight. Brandon Morrisey from Billy O'Sullivan Emerald Gym squared off with Black Dragon Fighter Jerrid Curry over 5 rounds and this was yet another war.

Curry took the fight on just two weeks notice and although the laurels went to the "Pit Bull" Waterford Fighter, Curry can certainly hold his head high. The first round saw both men land some bombs on each other and gaining each other's respect but Morrissey started to edge ahead after that and after 5 hard rounds he took a well deserved victory. Jerrid has a couple of fights lined up for the rest of the year and hopes to put in a challenge for a rematch for the title early next year, this time with a full camp.

The last fight of the night saw two spectacular kickers go at it for the recently vacated IKF All Ireland Light Welterweight Full Contact Rules Title. Sean Barrett from Billy's Emerald Gym and Shane Lawless from Na Fianna Gym in Athlone locked horns and provided a great main event. After 5 rounds of action, the decision went to the young Na Fianna Warrior from Athlone and both fighters showed fantastic respect to each other with Barrett placing the belt around Lawless's waist. It must be said that Sean Barrett played a major part in helping to Promote the show and was a great help to Promoter Billy O Sullivan. With regards to new champion Shane Lawless and to all the so called "Sharks" in that division, Lawless took this fight on 3 weeks notice and moved up to the 64.5kg from his preferred weight of 60kg. Shane has an old school attitude of "have gloves will fight" at any weight, any style. Few fighters will put themselves on the line from 58kg to 64.5kg and fight in several disciplines such as Full Contact, Low Kick and K-1. This kid has just turned 18 and even after his big win last night, he will be back in the gym on Monday and back to the grind. All 60kg fighters please take note: this young man is hungry and he's coming for ye.

Huge thanks to all the hard working officials last night who did a great job, the beautiful ring girls, the excellent MC, the DJ, Security Staff, Doctor Chad and the medical crew, the front door staff and all the set up crew and to all the supporters who travelled from all over the country. Fair play and hats off to hard working Promoter Billy O Sullivan - this was his 8th gig this year and he already has another planned for 27 October where he will put on an all female fight card.

Waterford, while a beautiful City, is hardly an employment or industrial hot spot but this man still seems to put on great shows and gives opportunities to lots of young fighters. For his small stature, he certainly stands tall in the World of Martial Arts - Well done again sir...

With 70 fights between them and only 1 disputed loss - there can be no arguing that this is as a genuine world title fight as there could be. You know when you are about to see a top fight when it's the end of a long day but the venue is still rammed and the crowd is as loud as they have been all day! The height advantage goes to Blaine, and although there was only 0.7kg between them at weigh in he also looks to be the larger fighter. Let's get underway ……..

A composed start from both, no inexperienced charges or combos - just pure class and concentration as both land strong shots - the movement is with Blaine and the hand speed with Rachman. The Dutch lad takes the centre of the stage and Blaine circles. You can cut the tension with a knife - even Mick Crossland isn't as vocal as usual. Both boys are fully aware they are in a fight against the highest of opponents and shots are drawing a nod of respect here and there. Blaine is spending 90% of his time circling to the right - at some point he is going to risk walking in to a left but I think he nicks that round with scoring at distance. Again the English lad is scoring from distance and although Rachman has his successes, especially with a dramatic and eye catching sweep, I would be putting Blaine ahead.

Come the 4th and the heat is being turned up - far more standing and trading but still in very precise and professional exchanges. Rachman is firing but looks a little hesitant as more of Blaine's shots land. Another dramatic sweep but I don't see it as enough to take the round. The 5th and the exclamation mark is put on the round by Blaine - landing heavily in head shots, dropping his hands and goading the Dutch lad, and landing a beautifully executed spinning kick to the stomach. It's been a cracking fight, really got the adrenaline going, but I cant see any other result than a UK win and Blaine staying unbeaten. The New IKF World Champion via unanimous decision 49-46, 48-47, 50-45 is Blaine Wilson!

A very tactical contest saw a fantastic demonstration of Full Contact Kickboxing. Hesslegrave came with a relatively small Full Contact record, but a hugely successful Light contact career behind her. Anderson looked strong from the outset but was held to account by Hesselgrave's strong front and side kick, which prevented her opponent from working. The styles of both girls clashed a little and at times they clashed heads or became tangled up and a cut opened on the head of Anderson. Mark White in the corner dealt with this very quickly at the end of the round and the following rounds were more of the same. A completely determined Anderson taking the fight to Hesselgrave, who, when unable to keep her at length with her kegs, tied her up inside. Not pretty, but effective. Although difficult to score at times, Hesselgrave seemed to be nicking the rounds, despite a couple of warnings for rope holding whilst kicking, and a frustrated Anderson came away knowing that she hadn't done enough. Despite this the contest went to a split decision win for Carla Hesselgrave, 50-45, 48-47 and 47-48 making him the New IKF Amateur Women's British Champion.
