Gladiators
Fighting Series Sells Out Milwaukee by PKW's
Gladiators Correspondent Greg Kalikas -
www.prokarateweekly.com
IKF
& ISCF Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA:
On a night which featured the return of one legend and a Hall-of-Fame
induction of another, the rapidly growing
Gladiators
Fighting Kickboxing & MMA Series was back in the
Milwaukee Ramada Convention Center's Grand Ballroom Friday night, October 21st,
with it's biggest show to date, "Colosseum
Returns."
In front of a raucous, standing room only crowd, fight fans
witnessed seventeen exciting, wild bouts featuring both Kickboxing and mixed
martial arts. As has become expected, promoters Duke Roufus and Scott
Joffe put together a first rate event that not only started on time, but
delivered on what was an action packed and very entertaining fight card.
Preliminary Bouts The
"Awesome Amateurs"
undercard featured several kickboxers with a promising future including
hometown, Duke Roufus trained fighters Benni "The Albanian
Jet" Izairi and Milwaukee's own Kyle Monreal, who was also
a major sponsor of the show, and Team Function's Andy Normington of
Madison, Wisconsin.
- In one of the most entertaining preliminary bouts Justin
Abate, of Pekin Illinois was able to out strike
Chris Trautsch of Prairie Du Chien,
Wisconsin and earned a well deserved TKO victory in the late stages of the
second round.
- In the featured preliminary fight, Rachid
Maakoul of Rockford, Illinois put on a very impressive display of
hand speed as he jabbed and hooked his way to a unanimous decision victory over
Lansing, Michigan's Henry Ebron.

KICKBOXING
With twelve fights still to come and the crowd
now in full fight mode, it was time to bring on the big boys as Canada's
Damian "The Demon" Smektala
(7-0) squared off with Roufus protégé
Kyle "Wicked" Weickhardt
who came in sporting his own impressive 5-1 record. Both fighters laid it on
the line for the sold out crowd in an evenly contested match up. The Demon
fired first with a series of low kicks which backed up Weickhardt early
and set the tone for the rest of the fight.
Weickhardt had his best round in the third and staggered Smektala
with a series of punches and kicks late, but it wasn't enough as Smektala
earned a unanimous decision and kept intact his undefeated record.
- ISCF
MMA
This card featured four fighters from the Buckeye
state including
Thomas Russell (right) of the Peak
Submission Fight Team who lead the charge in one of the night's most
exciting MMA fights. Russell, who had made his MMA debut just one
week prior, took on Milwaukee's Ray Koeper
and looked for his second win in two weeks. With an impressive display of
power and speed the nineteen year old Russell opened the fight with a
"Matt Hughes" like body slam that brought the crowd to its
feet and sent an early message to his opponent at the same time. From that
point on it was all Russell as he put Koeper away via strikes at
under two minutes of the opening round. Russell, now 2-0, is a
middleweight to watch for on future Gladiators' events.
- IKF
KICKBOXING
Next was a Kickboxing match-up of exciting
lightweights featuring Nathan Smith (Winner
at Right, Modesto, CA) of the world renowned Team Voodoo lead by
Gene Fields who took on Michigan's Ben "Stoneman"
Yelle as both fighters came in with identical 12-2 records. In
what many thought was the kickboxing fight of the night, Smith was able
to score with various combinations, all set up by devastating low kicks which
kept Yelle off balance for most of the fight. Yelle,
however, would not go quietly and showed off an impressive offensive arsenal of
his own that included several quick high kicks that just narrowly missed their
target. Both warriors would pick their shots in a fight that saw everything
from spinning backfists to five punch combinations, never for a second lacking
in action.
However, shortly after the bell rang to end round three, it was Smith
(above with Team Voodoo and Referee Al Wichgers) who came away with the
unanimous decision victory and improved to 13-2.
- ISCF
MMA
Bantamweight MMA fighter
Dan "The Savage" Lasavage
wasted little time taking care of Stacy Lavaque
in a cross state rivalry.
After a brief exchange, Lasavage (right) was able to get
the back of
Lavaque and finish the fight via rear naked choke in round number one.
- ISCF
MMA
Caleb Krull put
his undefeated MMA record (5-0) on the line against
Peak Submission's Chris Lee who
looked to announce his presence in the welterweight division. Things started
off in favor of Krull as an early take down led to several submission
attempts, including an armbar and triangle from his guard.
However, the younger and more aggressive Lee would not take the
bait and went on the attack, landing a barrage of strikes leaving ace referee
Al Wichgers with no choice, but to stop the fight giving Lee the
exciting TKO victory.
- IKF
KICKBOXING
In what was the night's most interesting bout,
Gladiators Fighting Series Kickboxing veterans
Bryce "Bam Bam" Frank of
Rockford, Illinois, would take on
Harold "The Hammer" Johnson
of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is still unclear what Johnson was
looking for as this match began, but it certainly was not a clean fight. After
several warnings and fouls which ranged from low blows, to holding, to tackling
after a break, Johnson was disqualified and a frustrated Frank
awarded the victory in a manner he surly didn't want.
- ISCF
MMA
In the fastest fight of the evening, Racine Catch
Teams'
Ed Nelson (left) scored a one
punch knockout at just fourteen seconds over fellow MMA Light Heavyweight
fighter
Reese Shaner of Waukesha, Wisconsin.
- IKF
KICKBOXING
The next bout featured the return of "Milwaukee's
Kickboxing Ironman"
Horace "The Real Deal" Craft
as he took on Chuck Jewel in a Super
Heavyweight bout.
Jewell held his own against the more experienced Craft in
the early stages, but was unable to stop a right hook which ended things in the
second round giving the "Ironman" a thrilling win in front of
a large legion of fans.
- ISCF
MMA
Known for his sharp ground game, Welterweight BJJ
champion and Milwaukee native
Jon Friedland took on the tough and aggressive
Hammer House fighter
Tommy "Gun" Ridenbaugh from
Newark, Ohio.
Ridenbaugh would push the pace early and tried to keep things
standing, but Friedland saw an opening and took the fight to the ground
where he would be able to work his magic. Ridenbaugh survived
several early submission attempts by Friedland, but was unable to escape
a rear naked choke late in round one. Friedland improved to 7-1
with the win and is another Milwaukee fighter that could make some noise in the
division. For more info on Friedland

- IKF
KICKBOXING
New Orleans native
Pat "Get Hype" Barry lived
up to his nickname as he took care of fellow K-1 veteran and Team Voodoo
fighter Dustin "The Mechanic"
Hanning (sporting a brightly colored head of bright magenta and
blue hair) of Los Angeles, CA.
Barry put on an impressive performance utilizing all of the tools
which have now made him a name to watch in the ranks of K-1.
The smaller, but quicker Barry used both his hand speed and quick
feet (landing the high kick at right) to neutralize any reach advantage
Hanning might have had. With thunderous, axe like low kicks
peppering Hanning's legs (left) spot on each time, Barry
put his colorful opponent away late in round one and improved to 13-1 overall. After
the fight, Barry addressed the appreciative crowd and thanked the fans
of Milwaukee and New Orleans for their support. It should be noted that Barry
recently relocated to Wisconsin after the Hurricane Katrina tragedy and
is now training full time under Duke Roufus in Milwaukee.
- ISCF
MMA
In one of the night's co-main events, UFC Middleweight
veteran
Adrian Serrano made his long awaited return to
the ring after fighting to recover from a life threatening illness which left
him wondering if he would ever compete professionally again.
But get in the ring he did and Serrano pounded out a win over the
very game
Brandon Lee who suffered his first career
loss. Serrano fought off an early surge by Lee (right)
while controlling the fight on the ground, showing why he is a MMA champion and
longtime Milwaukee favorite. Lee found himself on his back for most
of the fight and was unable to get hold of Serrano's solid forearms,
which eventually prompted referee Al Wichgers to stop the fight and
award Serrano a round two TKO victory. With over 100 career fights
to his credit Serrano told fans in an emotional post fight speech that
this was the biggest fight of his career considering everything it took for him
to get to this point. Congratulations to Adrian Serrano
a true legend of the sport!

Prior to the main event, Gladiators Fighting
Series co-promoter and 4-time Kickboxing World Champion Duke
Roufus was quite humbled and surprised when he was presented (Right)
with one of the sport's most prestigious honors as it was announced by former
Kickboxer and Gladiators official Keith Cory that he was being
officially inducted into Black Belt Magazine's Hall-of-Fame. A well
deserved honor for one of the sport's true champions and ambassadors.
MMA stars
Nick Agallar and
Stephan "The American Psycho" Bonnar,
star of SpikeTV's hit reality show "The Ultimate Fighter -
Season One" were also introduced to the crowd.
12. IKF KICKBOXING
Ben "The Berzerker" Rothwell,
fresh of his impressive victory headlining the Gladiators September 17th "Fight
Nite in the Flats" Cleveland show, would clash with Team Voodoo's
mountain of man, 6' 8", 266 lbs. Justice Smith
in the main event.
Larger didn't mean better though as it would not be Smith's
night in the brew city.
Smith could never really get things going against the more
experienced Rothwell and was penalized several times for low blows.
After the fourth foul, and against Rothwell's (right)
impassioned pleas to let the bout continue, referee Wichgers was left
with no choice, but to stop the fight in the first round and disqualify Smith.
While not the crash, bang, boom finish everyone was looking for, "Colosseum Returns" as a whole produced
one fantastically exciting night of Kickboxing and MMA brawls. As all fans
seemed to agree, seventeen bouts over five non-stop hours of action produced
another impressive Gladiators Fighting Series show that
delivered once again.
Fight fans can expect more fireworks in early 2006 as the
Gladiators
Fighting Series features two huge shows in February with a
return to Cleveland for a night of pro MMA action on a date yet to be announced
and then back to Milwaukee for a special Ten Year Anniversary show entitled "X - A Decade In The Making" February 24th at
the Ramada Convention Center.
"King of the Gladiators - One"
Tournament Champion Giuseppe "The Godfather" DeNatale,
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and "K.O.T.G. -
Two" Champion "Lightning" Mike
Sheppard, Palestine, West Virginia, have agreed to meet in the show's highly
anticipated Heavyweight "border war" main event.
Tickets
may be reserved now for this historic evening in Gladiators show history by

Hail To The CHIEF!
Fighting Super Star Danny "HARD AS" Steele Announces
His Retirement. By Steve Fossum
He would fight anyone, anywhere, anytime... in his prime. But
after being counted out by referee Dan Stell while on 1 knee this last
weekend, Two Time IKF World Champion (And
holder of MANY other World Titles, something in the relm of 6-7 total) Danny
"Hard As" Steele has made the decision to retire from the
fighting ring.
Steele had taken about two years off from fighting to
deal with some personal issues and when he returned to the ring, he was never
the same "Danny Steele" we all remember in the 90's. In his
final bout against San Francisco's Michael Mananquil in San Jose,
California USA this past Friday night, Steele saw himself about 10 years
ago. At one point during the bout, the fans were chanting for his opponent and
Steele looked up at them as if to say, "That use to be my name
they were chanting." If he was wondering that, which we don't actually
know if he was, he was right.
Steele
entertained THOUSANDS around the world on every continent. In doing so he won
titles with every major kickboxing organization as well as some we have never
heard of (IKF, WKA, ISKA, ICHKA, NAMKA, IKKC & the IKBL) on his was
to compiling a fight record of 37 wins and 13 loses, 2 draws with 28 of his wins
coming by way of KO or TKO. Keep in mind that half of his 13 loses came in the
past 3 years. Of the other loses, they came against top warriors, as did over
90% of his wins. Some came from such greats as Coban Lookchaomaesithong,
George Tsutsui, Matee Jedeepitak, Bilam Nesradine, Patrick Erikson, Miguel
Reyes, Dave Horvath, Melvin Murray, Bouy Chowaikun, Rob McCullough, Malaipet
Sitpraphrom, Kenichi Ogata, Kader Marouf, Say Ming Boupha,
and Sebastian Farina just to name a few. One of those great
match-ups over the years was Danny vs.Melcor Menor. They have
met a few times in the ring and thanks to Mike Miles, here is a clip
from their match up in Hawaii
CLICK
HERE.
As we mentioned, Steele NEVER dodged anyone in
his prime. We say in his prime because he was forced to pull out of some
bouts in the last few years, mainly due to some personal issues he was dealing
with.
Probably the most high profile of those matches he pulled out
of was a match-up between him and
Trevor 'T.N.T' Smandych (Left) of Calgary, Alberta,
Canada. Smandych was a former two time IKF
Amateur Muay Thai Champion (IKF Intercontinental Light Welterweight and IKF
North American Welterweight Muay Thai Champion.) with an impressive pro
record of 18-1-1 and an amateur record of 11-4-1. Fighting Danny Steele
was a dream come true for him. However, weight and personal issues prevented
Steele from showing on fight day and if anything, it took away some of
the fire in what had hoped to be Smandych's dream bout. At the event,
Smandych was on the verge of tears during his presentment of the WKA
title they were to fight for, by default. However, he pushed the belt away and
would not accept it.
Unlike the Smandych fight, this last weekend Danny came to
fight. Although he was dominated in every round, Steele stayed tough, as
he always has. Steele earned his nickname "Hard As"
from the strength and power of his legs mainly. His two most powerful weapons
that retired plenty of fighters in his time. Steele could take anything
you gave him too. In fact, this past weekend was the only time we can remember
EVER seeing him go to the canvas. The first shock came in the first round when
he was dropped by a head kick in the opening seconds against Michael
Mananquil. From that point on, it seemed he just never fully recovered from
the blow. He was caught again in the 5th round and went down again. Although he
didn't look to be hurt, Steele came up to one knee and while there,
allowed Referee Dan Stell to give him the full 10 count. When the count
was over Steele stood up and knew his time had come. He was at a
different place in his life both mentally and physically and the younger Mananquil
did what many new stars in our sport have done such as Carter Williams
had done with Michael McDonald and Rick Roufus. He became a
super star by defeating a legend.
After the bout, I greeted Danny at the bottom of the
stairs. He told me "I just can't do it anymore. I'm just not the same."
I told him how proud I was to know the "REAL" Danny Steele
and how thankful I was to be a part of his great career. He responded in pure
Danny Steele fashion, with a heart felt "Thank You."
I wondered how many new fans of the sport watching that night
wondered if "This" was the Danny Steele they had heard
of? To answer them, "Not even Close!" I felt sorry for
those who missed Danny when he was in his prime. Those who missed his
strength in the ring, his pride and most of all, his Passion for everything he
did in his life. Sure we will miss Danny in the ring but he is not gone.
I truly hope we have not seen the last of Danny because he can go on now
to help many young fighters become a warrior as he was.
Some say Danny
Steele was arrogant, cocky, stuck on himself. Well, OF COURSE he
was! ALL great fighters share the same attitude. However, what was
impressive about Steele, he could always back it up in the ring. Talk to
Danny alone and he has a heart of
GOLD! Although a strong and fierce competitor, he also had a very
respectful and friendly side. He made friends with many around the world as he
traveled to win over and over again.
Steele won his first IKF
World Title, the IKF Pro MTR Light
Welterweight World Title, when he defeated Dave Horvath of Winnipeg
Manitoba Canada by TKO at 2:53 of round 2 in Fresno, California, USA on July
12th, 1997. To give you an idea of how much his record changed in the last few
years, when he won his second IKF world
title, the IKF Pro IR Welterweight World
Title in Hawaii on July 16th, 1999, Steele's fight record was an
impressive 31-5-2. Steele won this IKF
title when he defeated Miguel Reyes of Tijauana, Baja CA, Mexico, by
unanimous decision, 100-88, 98-91 and 99-91. Yes, over the next 5 years since
that second World Title victory, Steele's record was a less impressive
6-8.
Steele was a Kaiser High School (Hawaii)
graduate who was born in Vietnam and moved to Hawaii when he was 3. He grew up
admiring the martial arts and realized that the prospects for a career in
kickboxing in Hawaii weren't very good. So he moved to Los Angeles in 1993 and
turned professional shortly thereafter. He was quoted prior to the Reyes
fight as saying,
"I'm very confident -- not in a cocky way, but in a
way that I feel that nobody will get in the way of what I have to accomplish,"
he said. "I'm not going to take anyone lightly. When you get too
confident, that's when (bad) things can happen. It's happened before, so I'm not
taking Miguel lightly. But I have enough confidence where I think he's not on my
level."
There was something about Danny Steele though that was
different than any other fighter... OK, A LOT of things. But what I remember
most was that he would always tell the crowd, "Thank you for supporting
me and this event," And if not to the crowd over the microphone, he
would later ask me and many others, "Did you
enjoy the show?" Well Danny, the answer is
simple,
"We have ALWAYS Enjoyed The
Danny 'HARD AS' Steel Show! And
we will NEVER forget what a GREAT SHOW it was!

THE
COLOSSEUM RETURNS
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
IKF/ISCF Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA:
This
Friday night, October 21st, Milwaukee will become "Gladiator Town" as Duke Roufus and
Scott Joffe's Ad Cetera Sports
Productions will host another exciting night of
Pro and Amateur IKF
Kickboxing and ISCF MMA. The event will be
at the Ramada Grand Ballroom, 6401 S. 13th St, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.
Event doors will open at 6:PM and the fight action will begin at 8:PM.
While Kickboxing has always been the main course of the Gladiators Fighting Series, Mixed Martial Arts ("MMA")

Heeding the advice of her doctor, MMA Gladiator Greta "Mo Betta"
Hicks had no choice but to pull out of her highly anticipated "revenge
match" with fellow MMA Gladiator Jen "The Genetic Wonder"
Case scheduled for tomorrow night. After being diagnosed with a pinched
nerve in her neck, the popular female mixed martial artist decided it was best
to rematch Case, whom Hicks lost to in June of this year, on the
Gladiators Fighting Series 10th Anniversary show scheduled for Friday, February
24th in Milwaukee.
Hicks is unsure when her physician will give her clearance to begin
training again, buts anticipates she will have ample time to prepare for her
February rematch with Case.

IKF
Illinois, USA : IKF
Promoters Ron Hill, James Hill, and Brian Thompson (Right)
will be hosting The Standoff III, this Saturday October 22nd at
the IBEW 176 Banquet Hall in Joliet, Illinois. This amazing Trio has put
together another awesome fight card.
The
Standoff III, "Vendetta"
will feature 2005
IKF North American Champion
James Bleau vs Tim Riordan.
At this years 2005
IKF North American Tournament
at the Wyndham Palace Resort in Orlando Florida this past August, James
Bleau (Left, 8-4/0) of Marquette, Michigan, USA (Trained by Kak
Koonala) took home the NAC Muay Thai Welterweight title when he defeated
Phil Leier from Mike Miles club in Canada in the Welterweight
Division.
This Division was one of the strongest of the Tournament with 8
fighters. This meant that the Champion would need to defeat three straight
opponents in two days to win the Title, which is what Bleau did. In the
opening bracket on Saturday morning Bleau defeated Liajdub Vang
of Des Moines, Iowa, USA by unanimous decision 30-26 on all 3 judges cards.
Later Saturday afternoon Bleau faced and defeated
2004 NAC Champion
Nathan Smith of Modesto, California, USA by unanimous decision 30-27 on
all 3 judges cards. Smith is trained by Gene Fields, the trainer of K-1
Champion Carter Williams.
In the final, Bleau faced off against a tough Phil
Leier of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and in a great fight between the two, Bleau
came out on top by unanimous decision, 29-28 on all 3 judges cards.
Now Bleau will take on a very tough opponent, Tim
Riordan (Left) from Team Lucky Strike. Riordan
didn't make it to the NAC Tournament but will look to take on the best he's ever
met in Bleau.
Riordan last appearance on an IKF
event was earlier this year in Rockford, Illinois, USA on May 6th. At that event
he defeated Alex May of Functional Martial Arts Academy in Madison,
Wisconsin, USA by TKO at 1:26 of round 1. It was May's debut fight and
Riordan 7th boosting his fight record to 4-3 with the win. Riordan
is currently ranked 15th
in the Super Welterweight Amateur Muay Thai world ratings.
The Standoff III card will also feature
additional fighters from gyms across the Midwest including: Peoria Athletic
Club, Team Toro, Olympic Arena, Gorak's Kenpo, Tiger Pitt Gym, Nihlan's Muay
Thai, Aiki Training Hall, and Team Lucky Strike.
The event will consist of 10 IKF
sanctioned Kickboxing bouts and exciting martial arts exhibitions. Come early as
seating is limited for this "Las Vegas Style" ballroom event.
Doors open at 6:30pm and the show starts at 7:30pm. For more information log on

RESULTS FROM
KNUCKLEUP's
First
Event - Kennesaw, Georgia, USA
IKF/ISCF Georgia, USA
Knuckle Up
productions put on a great MMA/Muay Thai card in Atlanta for a packed house of
more than 2,200 screaming fans. With some last minute fight card adjustments the
night was set for some great Mixed Martial Arts and Muay Thai action.
- IKF MUAY
THAI
The night started off with Amateur Muay Thai featuring Janna
Fritz vs Tonja Ivanovich. Though both girls were very game, Janna
came out on top and took the victory home with a TKO stoppage in the 3rd round.
- ISCF MMA
Steve Mitchell squared of against Jim Kassner and Kassner
proved to be too much on his feet scoring a second round referee stoppage from
strikes. Mitchell had several deep heels hooks in but couldn't finish
Kassner.
- ISCF MMA
Joel Negron went toe to toe with
Cal Yarborough which was an even fight until late in the first round
with Joel receiving a cut over his left eye but was able to continue.
Soon after the timeout for the cut Cal exploded with some vicious blows
finally earning a corner stoppage and taking home the TKO win over Negron.
- ISCF MMA
David Brown looked to take Joe "Agent" Smith
down to the ground and employ his ground game but ran into a good grappler in
Smith and the ground war ended with
Brown being stopped from un answered blows on the bottom.
- ISCF MMA
Douglas "The Baby Boy" Lima completely demolished an
experienced Mike Cogan in dramatic fashion. Lima every bit of 17
years old squared off against Cogan in what was expected to be an even
match up of skill. Douglas took the upper hand throwing a ton of leather
and eventually winning the fight with Cogan tapping on the cage from a
vicious assault of knees and hands from Lima. Definatley look for this
kid to be destroying the competition on some future Knuckle Up shows.
- IKF
KICKBOXING
Anthony Nieves barley broke a sweat against Shaun
Gay, cracking him early with some solid shots as Gay was unable to
continue a minute into the first round due to a leg injury sustained from
exchanging kicks.
- ISCF MMA
Diego Saraiva and Virgil Strzelecki went at it early trading
leather and eventually ending up on the ground were the black belt (Saraiva)
imposed his superior submission skills on Virgil via triangle from the
bottom mid way thought he first round.
- ISCF MMA
Ran Weathers ran into a tough opponent as the undefeated armature made
his pro debut against a seasoned wrestler in Ryan Williams. Williams
scored the early takedown and began the ground and pound tactics while fending
off Weathers' constant triangle and arm bar attempts. Williams'
grappling ability and intensity proved too much for Weathers' as he
tapped from strikes in the second round.
- IKF PRO MUAY THAI
Reuben Lopez vs Randy Pogue was probably the fight of the
night. Both men entered the cage hungry and squared of for 5 action packed
rounds with Lopez walking away the aggressor. Both men gave and took
some serious shots as the rounds progressed. It was a pleasure to see two pros
in great condition push each others level of intensity the entire fight.
- IKF PRO
MUAY THAI
Philip Botha made quick work of his last minute
replacement Bobby Gamboa with a medical stoppage from a broken foot
during a fierce exchange of leg kicks and knees. Congratulations to Philip
and we look forward to his next fight on the next card.
- GRAPPLING
Steve Headden
also made quick work of his opponent tapping him in a short amount of time in a
grappling only bout.

Needs Some Help To Do Some
POSITIVE
Kicking In
Afghanistan
E-Mail Letter sent from Nelson Lebron
Good Morning
Gentlemen,
In order to help with public relations in Afghanistan, I am
meeting with an orphanage this weekend to teach young kids,
boxing/karate/kickboxing. I was wondering if you can pass word to the IKF, JLFS, WKA, and WKKO.
I am being granted this privilege because of my background. I
was wondering if you all can help with the donation of gloves, mitts, wraps, and
kick shields. I need about 50 sets of gloves, 50 wraps, 10 shields, 10 pair of
mitts. The equipment does not have to be new, but it should be in good
condition. I appreciate your help with this.
To reach Nelson by e-mail us

Sometimes,
We all need to be reminded of
the
Simple things in life...
Important Lessons In Life
- First Important Lesson - Cleaning Lady.
During my second month
of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and
had breezed through the questions until I read the last one: "What is
the first name of the woman who cleans the school?" Surely this was
some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall,
dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper,
leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if
the last question would count toward our quiz grade. "Absolutely,"
said the professor. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All
are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is
smile and say "hello." I've never forgotten that lesson. I also
learned her name was Dorothy.
- Second Important Lesson - Pickup in the Rain
One night, at
11:30 p.m., an older African American woman was standing on the side of an
Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had broken down
and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the
next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those
conflict-filled 1960s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and
put her into a taxicab. She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his
address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man's door.
To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special
note was attached. It read: "Thank you so much for assisting me on the
highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my
spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying
husband's bedside just before he passed away... God bless you for helping me and
unselfishly serving others." Sincerely, Mrs. Nat King Cole.
- Third Important Lesson - Always remember those who serve.
In
the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a
hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front
of him. "How much is an ice cream sundae?" he asked. "Fifty
cents," replied the waitress. The little boy pulled his hand out of his
pocket and studied the coins in it. "Well, how much is a plain dish of
ice cream?" he inquired. By now more people were waiting for a table
and the waitress was growing impatient. "Thirty-five cents,"
she brusquely replied. The little boy again counted his coins. "I'll
have the plain ice cream," he said. The waitress brought the ice cream,
put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid
the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped
down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, was one quarter, two
dimes and five pennies. You see, he couldn't have the sundae, because he had to
have enough left to leave her a tip.
- Fourth Important Lesson. - The obstacle in Our Path.
In ancient
times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched
to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest
merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed
the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting
the stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of
vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and
tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and
straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of
vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The
purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the
gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant
learned what many of us never understand! Every obstacle presents an opportunity
to improve our condition.
- Fifth Important Lesson - Giving When it Counts...
Many years
ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl
named Liz who was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only chance
of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who
had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies
needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little
brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to
his sister. I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and
saying, "Yes I'll do it if it will save her." As the
transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all
did, seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then his face grew pale and his
smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will
I start to die right away". Being young, the little boy had
misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all
of his blood in order to save her.

"Knuckle-Up"
Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Atlantas
Velocity Kickboxing in association with Knuckle Up Productions
is adding to the MMA Excitement in Georgia with their first MMA/Kickboxing show
coming later this month. This rugged style of competition (MMA) has
captured the attention of the masses and the guys at Velocity know first

REHAB, Cages and Butt-Kicking...OH
MY!
Danny Boone Alexander (vocals), Mike
Hartnett (guitar), FOZ (guitar), Hano Leathers
(bass) and Chris Hood (drums).
REHAB has been reborn and they're back
with a vengeance! The Atlanta-based quintet breaks new ground and addresses new
challenges on its latest album, Graffiti the World. The collection is
the work of combined contributions from each individual member of the band. "It's
five people getting together and trying to do the music that they want to hear,"
says front man Danny Alexander. "Everybody contributed. You
always have a vision of what you want to do and it never really comes out the
way you plan, but the end result is really good. You're just constantly trying
to put out what you feel. The final result of their combined efforts evokes a
more positive and inspired feeling to the record."
For REHAB, Graffiti
the World is the band's bid to cover the world with special sounds, seeking
the dark and light within, asking questions and perhaps, sometimes, finding the
right answers. Danny admits that he can't do that alone. Along with the
help of A- list producers/mixers Billy Hume, whose credits include the
Ying Yang Twins, David Banner, and Bonecrusher, and Phil Tan
who has worked alongside the Neptunes, Snoop, and Mariah Carey.
Currently recording and touring, Danny speaks about his
new songs Last Tattoo and Bump. He states, "My lyrics
are becoming more and more conscious and meaningful from my past work. Last
Tattoo confronts the temporary nature of relationships. Bump is a story of a
beautiful evening in Warner Robbins, Georgia (Boons home town), driving around
listening to music and having a great time...I have learned to tell better
stories in my songs, they're all my own personal stories and experiences but I
know others can relate to them.
"
REHAB is currently on tour promoting their
second album Graffiti the World.

IKF NEWS FOR 10-10-05
RESULTS FROM
Night Of The Warriors
October 1st, 2005, Grand Casino Hinkley, Hinkley,
Minnesota, USA
By Mr. Bill Lassi,
IKF Minnesota
- AMATEUR FCR
Vance Cuyo Vs Chris Cherock
The
first bout of the evening featured Vance Cuyo vs. Chris Sherock.
This was a 3 round amateur light middle weight fight. Both fighters weighed in
at 155 lbs. Cuyo from Camridge Minnesota is 18 years old and is trained
by Derek Reid also of Cambridge. This was Vance's first full
contact bout.
Sherock is from Thunder Bay, Ontario Canada and is 22 years old. He has
a record of 2 wins and 3 losses and is trained by Mitz Bandiera of
Progressive Martial Arts in Thunder Bay. This fight started out with both
fighters throwing a lot of punches and kicks. In the first round Cuyo
knocked Sherock down to score a 10-8 round. The second round was mostly
Sherock's. He dominated the round and scored a 10-8 round on 1 of the
judges cards. The 3rd round was the deciding one with Cuyo edging Sherock
for a unanimous decision, 29-27, 28-27 and 29-27 on the judges score cards.
- AMATEUR FCR
Tim Runquist Vs Mika Rahkola
The
2nd bout of the evening featured Tim Runquist against Mika Rahkola.
This was a 3 round heavyweight bout with Runquist weighing in at 214 and
Rahkola weighing in at 196.
Runquist is from Aurora, Minnesota and is 31 years old and has a record
of 2 wins 2 losses and 1 draw. Rahkola is from Thunder Bay Ontario
Canada and is 34 years old with a record of 0 wins and 1 loss. Runquist
trains with Karate North and Rahkola trains with Mitz Bandiera
of Progressive Martial Arts in Thunder Bay. This fight was a war right from the
beginning with both fighters throwing bombs with both their hands and their
legs. Early in the round Runquist threw a spinning back fist that
connected with Rahkola and knocked him down. Referee Jim Peterson
gave him an 8 count and the bout continued. With about 40 seconds left in the
1st round Runquist threw a hand combination followed by a back leg round
kick. Rahkola went down and referee Jim Peterson counted him
out. Runquist won the bout with a knock out at 1:27 of the 1st round.
- JUNIOR AMATEUR FCR
Kendra Moytl and Dede Radtke
The
3rd bout of the evening was one of the best. This bout was a Junior Girls
Bantomweight fight between Kendra Moytl and Dede Radtke. Kendra
is 14 years old and weighed in at 117 lbs. Her record is 0 wins and 1 loss. She
is trained by Bobby "The Warrior" Anderson and is from
Hinckley Minnesota. Dede is 15 years old and weighed in at 114 lbs. She
is trained by Frank Maki and is from Virginia, Minnesota. Both fighters
came out strong in the first round. They both threw excellent flurries with
combinations of hands and feet. Moytl won the first round on 2 of the
judges cards. The second round Radtke turned it up a notch and edged
Moytl out to win the round. The third round was all Radtke. She
was relentless and was not going to leave anything to chance. Dede won
the fight by a unanimous decision scoring 30-27, 29-28 & 29-28.
- AMATEUR FCR
Adam Patneaude and Carlos
Hernandez
The next bout featured 2 new amateurs,
Adam Patneaude and Carlos Hernandez. Both fighters had a record
of 1 win and 0 losses. The bout was a 3 round amateur super welterweight bout
with Hernanadez weighing in at 152 and Patneaude weighing in at
151. Adam is trained by Derek Reid and is from Cambride
Minnesota. Carlos is trained by Bobby Anderson and is from the
the Hinckley area. This bout was very close. Both fighters were well trained and
skilled. Each judge found something that they liked about both fighters but in
the end Patneaude won the fight by a decision. Hernandez did not
help his cause when he failed to get in his mandatory 6 kicks in the final
round. The decision was unanimous for Adam Patneaude.
- AMATEUR FCR
Jamie McDermid and Chris Cichon
The
last amateur bout of the evening featured 2 young men both of whom had some
experience and a lot of skill. The bout was a light middleweight bout between
Jamie McDermid and Chris Cichon. Jamie had a record of 6 wins
and 1 loss while Chris had a record of 3 wins and 3 losses. Jamie
is from Virginia Minnesota and is trained by Frank Maki. Chris
is from Minneapolis and is trained by Justin Whiley. Both fighters
showed their kicking skills early. Again this bout was very close with the
judges scoring the rounds quite differently.
Cichon pressed the fight and was more aggressive where as McDermid
used his skills to move and counter attack. In the end Cichon won a very
close fight with each judge scoring the bout 29-28 for a unanimous decision.
- PRO FCR
Matt Meyer and Jeremy Pearson
After
a intermission the first of our 2 pro fights began. This bout was a 6 round
light heavy weight fight between Matt Meyer and Jeremy Pearson.
This fight was Meyers pro debut after compiling an amateur record of 25
wins, 5 losses with 7 KO's. Meyer is from Spooner, Wisconsin. He weighed
in at 176 and is trained by his father
Mike Meyer. Pearson has a pro record of 7 wins and 4 losses. He
is from Thunder Bay Ontario. He weighed in at 177 and is trained by Mitz
Bandiera. This bout was exciting right from the beginning with Meyer
using his longer reach with his hands and legs to control the first 3 rounds. In
typical Pearson fashion though, Jeremy turned it up in the 4th
round and began to land excellent combinations of hands and feet this was
another excellent bout and very difficult for the judges to score. In the end 2
of the judges had the bout even 57-57, the third judge had the fight scored
59-55 and the result was a Majority Draw.
- PRO FCR
Aaron Lassi and Sam Stout
The
final bout of the evening featured 2 world class fighters. This was a 7 round
light middleweight bout between Aaron Lassi and Sam Stout. Both
of these fighters have a lot of experience and both have won amateur and
professional titles in their careers. Lassi is from Duluth, Minnesota
and now resides in Honolulu, Hawaii. He weighed in at 159 and is trained by his
father Bill Lassi from Duluth. Stout is from London Ontario
Canada. He also weighed in at 159 and is trained by Shawn Tompkins, from
Team Tompkins also in London, Ontario. It was easy to see the difference
in experience that both fighters had. Lassi came out in the first round
and used his kicks along with some excellent hand combinations to control the
early rounds. But stout was relentless. Both fighters threw very had
combinations of hands and feet.
In the 2nd round Lassi threw a
spinning back fist that seemed to hurt stout.
When the 4th round began the
tide had turned in stouts favor. He began to land more and more combinations and
began to wear Lassi down.
When the 6th round began the fight had
clearly turned in Stouts favor. With about 30 seconds left in the 6th
round Stout threw a back legged round kick to Lassi's head. Aaron
ducked and was hit in the mouth by Stouts knee. Referee Jim Peterson
had warned Stout 2 times earlier in the bout for striking with the knee.
Peterson stopped the fight called for the ring doctor to look at Lassi's
cut lip. The ring doctor stopped the fight because there was a great deal of
blood coming from Lassi's cut lip. Referee Peterson called for a
intentional foul on Stout. After conferring with the 3 judges and the
IKF Representative Tom Sullivan,
referee
Peterson decided that the knee strike was not
intentional.
The judges were asked to score the 6th round up to
the point of the foul. After the scores were totalled, IKF
Representative Tom Sullivan declared the bout a technical draw.
