SUNDAY, July 31st, 2011, AT 3:00 PM/ PST California Athletic
Commission Approves International Kickboxing Tournament! With welcome news the California Athletic Commission, Director Mr.
George Dodd, The event has been taking place for the past twelve years in other states like Iowa and Florida. (For info on past IKF Tournaments - CLICK HERE!) The IKF World Classic, has had up to 300 competitors combined with men, women and children ages 7 and up. Although the IKF "WORLD" Classic Championship Tournament will continue each year in Orlando Florida, (2012 IKF World Classic Tournament Click Here.) the West Coast Classic Tournament is be the first of several added IKF tournaments around the Nation. (Soon to Come the IKF East Coast Classic and the IKF Midwest Classic) The IKF Tournaments has been the proving ground for the best Kickboxers and Muay Thai Fighters in the world in full contact action! Nick-named the "Golden Gloves of Kickboxing Tournament," approximately a dozen countries send fighters, trainers and fans to this exciting affair! The IKF World Classic is well organized with beautiful championship belts and recognized value that will last a lifetime to those with the ability to win a championship. Moreover, the tournament has been an incubator for years for many of today's kickboxing, Muay Thai and mixed martial arts competitors. Now, all of this prestige will come to Sacramento, California in The IKF West Coast Muay Thai / Kickboxing Classic Tournament and continue the legacy of excellence! This historical event has been highly anticipated for the last decade as the West Coast has had some of the most talented kickboxers and promotions in the country over the past twenty years. The Best fighters from around the world will now have the opportunity to match their skills against West Coast elites! The IKF West Coast Classic will be held the weekend of November 25th, 26th and 27th (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) in Sacramento, California at the beautiful Radisson Hotel located at 500 Leisure Lane, Sacramento, CA 95815. Yes, the weekend following Thanksgiving Day. Some may ask, why this weekend? One of the motivators was last year, we witnessed over 2000 + Karate competitors and family members travel to Sacramento one day after Christmas and stay an entire week (Dec. 26th through Jan. 1st) supporting one of the Largest Karate Tournaments (respectfully) in the world called the Super Grands. Clearly, family members, Karate athletes and fans are committed to their sport and annually reserve the date to attend this excellent event. The time is now for the Kickboxing & Muay Thai community to rise up and move the needle on our sport. The IKF West Coast Muay Thai / Kickboxing Championship is the perfect opportunity for you to show your support and passion for the sport you love too! We hope that you will consider the Kickboxing & Muay Thai community as part of your family and come out to this great event! The IKF West Coast Muay Thai / Kickboxing Championship is a must for the serious fighters! Furthermore, the venue is near major shopping areas offering Super Black Friday deals for those that come in early! Its highly recommended that you book your room and flights now! As is with the IKF World Classic, all competitors will need to stay at the host hotel, the Sacramento Radisson. Be sure to use the proper booking code (For Hotel Info Click HERE!) to reserve your rooms in order to receive the discounted entry fee to the tournament. Moreover, staying at the hotel keeps you accessible for all the action for the weekend. The tournament will have four major forms of Kickboxing for men, women and children ages 7 and up. Modified Muay Thai Rules, which consist of kicks and punches of normal kickboxing but adds knees. Full Rules Muay Thai which includes elbows and International Rules which has boxing and all kicks... including kicks to the legs...minus the knees to the body. There will also be the High Kick divisions which only allows kicks above the waist with all boxing techniques included. The first day ( Friday, November 25th) will be registration, weigh-ins, pre fight physical exams, rules meeting etc. for the hundreds of fighters that will attend. The second day (Saturday November 26th) will be the first round of eliminations. Brackets with eight competitors (Brackets will be limited to the first "8" Fighters registered!) will require a second fight on this day for the winners of their first bout. The third day (Sunday, November 27th) also known as Championship Sunday... is where the two finalist in their weight division will fight for the IKF West Coast Muay /Thai Kickboxing Classic Championship. Those fighting for the title in full brackets may have to fight up to three times that weekend to become the champion! All fighters participating in the event will have to be 100% amateur status regardless of their past experience in other contact sports. California Athletic Commission approved inspectors, officials, medical staff including doctors, nurses and full service ambulances will be at the event in case of any emergencies to monitor all competitors before, during and after each match. The limited eight competitor brackets may fill up fast in your division and why it is highly suggested that you enter the tournament as soon as possible. You will be able to see all competitors in your division as the event nears. If no one enters your division, you will have the option to compete in other divisions.
The IKF is thankful to the California State Athletic Commission, The Sacramento Visitors Bureau and Rebecca Alvarez for her assistance in getting the event approved. Fight fans will now have the opportunity to witness some of the best fighters and one of the greatest fighting events on the planet! The IKF will be coordinating this event in conjunction with the California State Athletic Commission so you can be assured that the event will be run well with qualified officials and as usual... fair treatment to all! Again, everyone must pre-register for this event either
online or by mailing in to the IKF
Headquaters. See you in California! Gentle Giant
Vigney...Set to Defend....Ready For The World!
IKF
US Super Heavyweight Champion Xavier Vigney defends title in Sacramento
September 2nd!
Muay Thai / Kickboxing! Say
it loud and say it proud! Passion, it burns in every real fighter and its this passion that so many in the kickboxing world have that will take the sport to the next level and those that continue to come out to kickboxing shows that are put on well etc. will show why TV executives, huge casino owners and mega sports entertainment companies are simply missing the boat by not getting on board! To put it simply...they are missing their Starbucks moment but perhaps soon...someone will wakeup and "smell the coffee," step up and give the fighters, fans and the sport what it deserves! With another AK promotions event being scheduled for early to mid. October in preparation for the First Annual IKF West Coast Classic Tournament that will be held in Sacramento at the Radisson Hotel in late November. This event will have fighters from around the world participating in this "Golden Glove Style" tournament in assorted rules styles. Adding to a full weekend of action-packed fights will also be vendors, movie stars and more...the future is getting brighter for Kickboxing and Muay Thai! For those that have been in the audience at one of the many AK promotions shows held mostly in the Sacramento, California area over the past three years, you have witnessed several fighters like Jon "The Hawk" Pryor of Sacramento ascend to the top of his division and now is the man to beat as the new IKF World Champion. You have also witness fighters like Daniel "Hitman" Hodges of Rocklin, California win numerous titles in rugged good old fashion, never a dull - moment brawls. T.J. Arcangle of San Francisco, California continues to display technical brilliance in his quest for the IKF World Title and newcomer, Ed Abosolo of Vallejo, California is determined to demonstrate he will be a force to recon with for sometime. However, of these one of the most impressive performances has been the comeback kid who fought his way back to the top of the division after suffering a devastating knockout! Xavier "Sagat" Vigney of Pleasant Hill, California has the skill, personality and stature to begin to change the game for the sport! Skill-wise, his boxing ability is as good as the Klitchko brothers who both stand around 6'7" or 8" and are current Boxing world Champions. Fight fans love the big guys! Personality- wise... Vigney is simply one of the most personable people you would ever want to meet and one you would want as your neighbor as well as for a role model for your kids. At 6'8", he's noticeable in any arena and will make you take notice, as you should when he steps into the room or the ring. Vigney's gentle giant demeanor on the outside of the ring is a contradiction to what we witness in combat...he a wrecking machine trying to get you out of there...believe that! Vigney's full package will garner attention from the naysayers and when they see him fight, they will also be impressed with this young man who unless someone can stop the "Sagat Train" is destined to become a world champ! Friday, September 2nd, in Sacramento at the Doubletree Hotel, 6'5", Matt King of Dublin will get his chance. With his 6 wins with only 2 losses, he should give Vigney a run. However, if he is not successful, the rest of the world is welcome to send in their request to try and derail one that currently seems unstoppable on his quest to the top! |

As mentioned earlier, we have watched Jon Pryor climb to the top of his division. He was the hunter but is now the hunted as those from around the world are watching his every move. Up next is a young talented fighter out of Phoenix, Arizona that many have not seen here but have heard is a lean and mean fighting machine. Damien Early with 12 wins and only one defeat and sports a 6' frame at 153 lbs, will push Pryor to his limits in his attempt to take the title back home. We know Pryor has fast feet and hands. However, we often have to wonder what Pryor will show up. If the Pryor with heart and passion and the will to obtain his title shows up, he will walk out still champion as he will show us the skills we know he has but sometimes fails to let it go. However, if Pryor is not on board that night, Early could be crowned the new champion and the IKF World Championship will travel back to Arizona around the waist of the new champion. |
|||||||||
Ed Abosolo is a star and a champion! He just is! If you have the opportunity, walk up to this guy, you will feel stardom written all over him. Frankly, as one spectator in the audience at his last fight noted..."he is one of the coolest fighters you have ever witnessed in the ring." Dancing on his entrance to the ring, calculating his opponent's every thought with precision and has an offensive and defensive strategy for every move. Abosolo enters the ring like its his office and the opponent is visiting for a business meeting. After he dismantles them, he bows and shakes their hand showing respect but at the same time, he confidently gives notice to everyone in the Light Middleweight and Middleweight division that he is the man to beat... so come get some! Coming to get some will be Abosolo's toughest challenge to date, Armin Safiari, an international undefeated fighter who plans to reduce Abosolo to just another fighter. "Fearless" as his Trainer Kirian Fitzgibbons proclaims and puts it plain..."Armin will beat Ed" he makes no bones about it but the task is yet to be accomplished and we will only know after the final bell of this excellent match for the gold on September 2nd. |
|||||||||
In another title fight in a night loaded with championship fights, Jesus Sosa of San Leandro, California who is the current IKF California Welterweight Champion is a throw-back fighter with guts and balls to go with it! He comes at you like a bull but with tricks like a matador and with heavy hands that will knock you out as he showed his last two opponents. Eric Luna of San Jose, California has been around awhile and has a lot of experience with excellent training by his world champion coach Derek Yuen. However, we are not sure he has ever seen the likes of Sosa. If Sosa shows any of the potential he has shown in recent fights, Luna may want to polish up his game plan and be sure he is ready for a war because for sure that is exactly what this exciting match up will be! |
|||||||||
Again, AK Promotions is presenting two very talented junior fighters. Both fighters have a ton of "Smoker and unregulated" experience mostly because the State of California has only recently allowed Junior Kickboxing fighters to compete. Although, they are making their official debut, both fighters have well over 18 fights each and will show great techniques. Word is out on Dakota Huizar of Concord, California that he is one of the most talented juniors out there. However, we have seen Robert Burgess of Ceres, California and he is no joke either. This bout like many who saw the last junior bout are saying that it could be the fight of the night Yes, with all of the great matches schedules, these two juniors could steal the show. Both are so hungry and determined and both know that with a win an IKF title opportunity is surely coming soon and that is with almost certainty. So, there will be a lot at stake for these two juniors and the only question left is who will want it most and be willing to "go to the mud" for the victory. We will see! |
|||||||||
Ok, along with an incredible line up of fighters from across the state and beyond including a great rematch that ended in a draw on the last card between Manuel Engberson, of Sacramento, California and Jeremy Jacildo of Vallejo, California, September 2nd will be yet another great evening of IKF Championship Kickboxing and yet another showing of the greatness of the fighters who will be performing for a packed house in the Grand Ballroom of the Doubletree Hotel. Muay Thai / Kickboxing! Say it loud and say it proud! It's coming and coming strong! See you September 2nd at the Doubletree! Tickets on Sale Now! Card Subject to Change

2011 IKF World
Classic...
No Headline Or Words Can
Describe It!
As we type this, we are still trying to find
the right headline for this years
2011
IKF World Classic Amateur Kickboxing & Muay
Thai Championships
in Orlando Florida.
However, for once, if you can believe it, we can't. This years event was "EVERYTHING" all past IKF Tournaments have been, and yet far more. From record breaking numbers to record breaking performances by several fighters the accomplishments of this years WC are far too many to list out. Adding to the "seen" accomplishments, the IKF as a regulatory sanctioning body, established new Safety Protocols for not only all new amateur kickboxing events in Florida, but all Kickboxing and Muay Thai events worldwide. Anything short of what everyone saw this past weekend will be, well, "Below" acceptable for any "Tournament" style event.
We even served up some humble pie to ourselves when a mix up accidently left out some fighters from the opening brackets, that caused a delay Saturday morning before being fixed. To our praise to them, everyone took advantage of the delay to settle in and wait patiently before the brackets started. Once they did, nothing else stopped the action which was fast and furious and as always and of course, IMPRESSIVE!
What use to be a numbers game, was now a "PRESTIGE" thing as so many fighters and trainers explained to us over the weekend. As the IKF World Classic was growing and making a name for itself, it was all about numbers. However, for us, as many pointed out, it isn't about numbers anymore. It's about CLASS! It's about the prestige of what the World Classic title holds. The entire weekend from registrations to the final bout is "An Experience" none will forget. From the venue set up to the unmatched amount of awards the fighters receive, everyone realizes that nothing comes close to matching this event, and how EVERY fighter feels about it by the end of the weekend. The IKF Tournament found a need and filled it. Built an event, and they have come...
The room was filled with true contenders from around the globe who were willing to travel to a neutral location and meet ANY Fighter to "Walk The Walk" and prove to their peers they are everything from contending Gladiators to World Champions. Even those who may have lost in the opening round were able to prove to others their "Medal of Honor" after earning an IKF Medal for stepping in the ring at the IKF World Classic to "Walk the Walk!" They made the sacrifice to be a Champion in an OPEN division, against fighters both less as well as more experienced than them. They did not challenge to win a novice title. They challenged to win a "World Classic Title" - A Title unlike any other. Others around the world could have faced them this past weekend in the ring of battle, but choose not to.
For those who did win the title of IKF World Classic Champion, they were showered with awards that included their IKF World Classic Championship Certificate, Autograph Gloves, Champions hat (Which their trainer received as well) Champions hooded Sweatshirt and of course, their IKF World Classic Championship Belt. Fighters followed in tradition on Sunday with the saying, "You won the belt, you WEAR The belt!" Even those not winning the belt proudly wore their "Badge of Honor" per say, which was their IKF World Classic Medal. Why you may ask? Because they knew that so many others around the world didn't even try to be the BEST, yet "THEY" did, which even if they didn't win a belt, they won the respect of their peers by "Walking the Walk" when others did not.
We will have all the fight results with photos posted up next week. As for now, we will make the 3,000 mile journey back to the IKF Headquarters in Newcastle, California. To all of you who were a part of this years IKF World Classic, and we do mean "ALL OF YOU" from officials, trainers, fighters, hotel staff, family, friends and of course the tons of fans that "Packed the House" both days, (An attendance record set!) we want to thank you all and say how proud we are of all of you for making this years IKF World Classic an unforgettable experience for everyone!
In closing, there is a single phrase that pretty much sums up those who are a part of not just this years IKF World Classic, but all of them...
"What we do in Life, Echoes in Eternity."

That pretty much covers it all...

Results From Billy O' Sullivan's
"IKF
Fight Night"
July, 2011 - Carrick An Suir, Ireland
IKF Promoter and newly appointed 7th Dan Black Belt, Grand Master Billy O Sullivan promoted yet another event on Sunday and this time it was in the Strand Theatre, Carrick An Suir. The venue was top class, the fights were well matched and although it wasn't a sell out (due mainly to Tipperary V Waterford in the munster final) the fight fans were very vocal and everyone enjoyed the show. It was nice to see fighters and coachs from the IKF, WKN, AKAI and the Thai Boxing Fraternity (from Seamus Cogans camp in Cork) all working together for the common cause - kickboxing.
The show started with a light contact contest between two young girls, Niamh Jackson from Christy Stringers gym in Dublin and Sorcha Still from the Emerald gym in Carrick. This was a two round contest with Sorcha taking the laurels on this occasion.
Laura Lipovicianu from Stringers gym in Dublin took on Toyah Quinlan next in another light contact two rounder and this was declared a well deserved draw.
Promoter Mr. Billy O' Sullivan wishes to thank all the fighters, coachs, sponsors, medical team, set up/down crew etc, the IKF and of course the management and staff of the Strand Theatre. Full Contact results, scores & suspensions.

OFFICE CLOSED
Dear Fight
Fans,
Due to our 2011
IKF World Classic Amateur Kickboxing & Muay
Thai Championships in Orlando Florida The International Fight
Sports offices will be closed from Friday, July 8th until Tuesday evening, July
12th. Tuesday evening July 12th, we will have our offices set up in Orlando
Florida for the Tournament. Any e-mails will also be returned after Tuesday,
July 12th.
Early Friday morning, IKF President Steve Fossum and IKF Co Founder Dan Stell will be leaving IKF Headquarters in Newcastle, California for the 3,000 mile journey to Orlando. The two will drive to Omaha Nebraska where they will stop for a break and meet with IKF World Ambassador Brooks Mason.
Last year Brooks made the second half of the trip with them, however this year he will be flying to the event. After their stop in Omaha, they will travel to Kansas City where they will stop for a break to meet up with associates from Combat Sports International along with some other IKF & ISCF Associates. They hope to arrive in Orlando sometime Monday or Tuesday...Unless they get sidetracked with some fight action along the way.
So WHY do they DRIVE to this event every year? Well, in 2000, the second year of the event, the shipping company (UPS) who was also their shipping sponsor, lost all the tournament title belts. It was at that time when Fossum made the promise, "No fighter will ever again go home without his or her belt, and I will personally make sure all the Title belts get to the event." He's kept his promise. Starting in 2001, he has driven to every IKF Tournament ever held.

Athletes Of This Years
IKF World Classic
NEED YOU!
With the 2011 IKF World Classic Tournament coming next weekend, we wanted to ask if there are any more qualified Kickboxing and or Muay Thai Officials that would be willing to help the Amateur Athletes accomplish their dreams at this years IKF World Classic. We are not into the "Politics" of the sport so don't think we are only looking for "IKF" Officials. We are looking for Kickboxing and or Muay Thai officials from any and all organizations (ISKA, WKA, USMTA, Etc.) or state boxing-athletic commissions. We would be proud to have you share your skill and talent as ring officials with the hundreds of athletes, trainers and other officials this year. To see who is currently on our list go to www.ikfkickboxing.com/WCOfficials.htm There are more names to be added here once we arrive in Orlando, maybe even your name if your able to help.
We know there are a lot more Kickboxing Officials in the South East and we need them to help out if they can. Again, they do not have to be IKF Registered Officials. We welcome ANY and ALL Qualified Kickboxing and Muay Thai Officials to the Tournament.
We are in need of Judges, Referees, and Timekeepers. If you can help out, the fighters and other already confirmed Tournament Officials would greatly appreciate it.
We will have a special private dinner during our event rules meeting Friday night, but we need to have a head count for the hotel by this coming Wednesday, so please e-mail us your name and what kind of official you are qualified as. We will also give you meal vouchers for all your meals on Saturday and Sunday that can be used at any of the hotel restaurants. This way, if you want to have dinner with your friends, you can go on your own without having to wait for anyone else.
If you are an experienced and qualified Kickboxing or Muay Thai official that can help out at this years 2011 IKF World Classic Tournament we would love to book you now. we will provide your IKF Officials T-Shirt at no charge. We request you wear black pants if a referee, judges and timekeepers may dress as desired, but clean and neat. To volunteer for an officials position please e-mail us at main@ikfkickboxing.com and in the subject line, make sure it says, IKF WC Official.
Thanking you in advance for your help!!!

SPONSOR GIFTS! For nearly every IKF Tournament there are two company names that literally grew their name from the Tournament. Ringside Inc. was already a major player in the Boxing world and the IKF was a fast growing Kickboxing and Muay Thai organization. In late 1998, IKF President Steve Fossum and then Ringside representative Joe Taylor made a connection over the phone and soon after, the rest was History. Ringside and the IKF teamed up to sponsor the very first IKF Tournament in 1999, "The IKF/Ringside USA National Amateur Kickboxing Championships" As the years went by, sales became so large for their Kickboxing and MMA that Joe Taylor and Ringside owner John Brown made the decision to add an entirely new company for fight sports other than Boxing known asCombat Sports International. Soon after, MMA exploded and once again, the rest is history. Every year Ringside or now, Combat Sports International with the efforts of now President Joe Taylor, give away free gifts to every participant as well as free Autograph Gloves to every IKF Tournament Champion. Along with the Champion Gloves, every fighter will receive a Mini Keychain Glove and Handwraps and all "PRE REGISTERED CHIEF" will get a free Trainers Bag. Combat Sports International and the IKF will also team up for Champion Sweatshirts for all the Tournament Champions! This years IKF World Classic Fighters will be fighting with Gloves provided by Combat Sports International. |
||
They will be Red and Blue Wendy Fight Gloves along with Combat Sports Shin Pads for the fighters who need them. | ||
Although Wendy
and
Combat Sports won't have a booth at the
IKF World Classic
this year, | ||
The relationships between Brainpad and the IKF, like Ringside and Combat Sports International goes well beyond the IKF Tournaments. The IKF and other sanctioning bodies ( The ISCF, ISKA and KICK International also made the commitment after the IKF did ) made a commitment last year to begin the implementation of "Dual Arch" technology (A full upper and lower mouthguard for added safety) as a requirement for every fighter on Sanctioned events. Some still would rather use a single guard or a custom dentist made fitted mouthguard and although the IKF and other organizations (Kickboxing, Boxing, MMA) cannot "Force" a fighter to use the dual arch system, the IKF has noticed a significant decrease in head injuries and knockouts of the fighters that do use them. It's been proven that Brainpads Dual Arch Technology has added a higher level of safety for any fighter taking a shot to the head or jaw as compared to a single guard mouthguard. Like Ringside/Combat Sports International, when every fighter leaves the event, they will surly remember Brainpad for their generous gifts to help them in their fighting career. |

Two Of the Top Professional
Middleweight Kickboxers Will Face Off For What Promises To Be The
Professional
Fight Of 2011!
Muzammal Nawaz is known in the world of professional kickboxing as the 'Warrior of a 1000 Battles' amassing an outstanding record of over one hundred bouts in 36 countries during his outstanding career. At the age of 42, Muzammal Nawaz is an anomaly in the professional combat sport. His dedication to a healthy lifestyle and a highly intense training regiment has maintained his position as the top of his division for over a decade.
Outside of the ring, Muzammal Nawaz maintains a busy consulting career in the educational and voluntary sectors. He is also a highly sought out keynote motivational speaker in the area of leadership. He still finds time in his busy schedule to coach as the owner of the Bay Area Athletic Club in Burlington. His coaching philosophy is to empower athletes to be leaders and agents of change. The challenge for the champion is balancing his middleweight supremacy with a busy and meaningful career outside the ring.
Shannon Hudson is the IKF #1 World Ranked Middleweight contender. This young South Carolina native has raced up the world ratings with exceptional victories across the USA and Europe. His exciting fighting style earned him a spot on the highly popular Chuck Norris World Combat League. Shannon Hudson has always dreamed of a World Championship title in professional kickboxing. He faced Nawaz in 2009 in a non-title bout that was considered by experts in the world of kickboxing as the most exciting pro kickboxing bout of the year. In the end, Nawaz managed a very close split decision in the bout.
For the past two years Hudson has travelled to Atlanta to work with renowned pro boxing trainer, Xavier Biggs. He has since built an undefeated winning streak in the world of pro boxing and moved up two spots in the kickboxing world rankings. Main Events Top AK Promotions Event!
They always say the fans will remember the last bout most from a fight event. Well if this is true, fight fans will have this bout in their fight memories for a LONG time! For the Super Heavyweight fight fans that miss seeing K-1 here in North America, you should have been in Sacramento, CA this past Friday night. Although it wasn't called K-1, and the bout was actually in Muay Thai Rules, Promoter Johnny Davis has without a doubt taken center stage as the West Coast's BEST PROMOTER! And he's doing it with Amateur Fighters! Tonights fights had everything the past AK Promotions have had on them. A dynamic Action Packed undercard topped with "True Top Contender" Title bouts. Oh to be so lucky, so privileged to fight on one of these events. Since stepping it up a year or so ago, AK Promotions has avoided the high school gyms, fairground buildings, and venues of the like. All AK Promotions events are now held in Classy Venues and attached with them are some of the best Amateur Muay Thai and Kickboxing bouts in the Nation! This was the stage for this past Friday night and the shows Main Event was not just some "MADE-UP" title many see on some other California Promotions or other shows nationwide. The promoter here is not the "Sanctioning Body" and the title fighters on AK Promotions events are actually RANKED Contenders that anyone can look up in the IKF Rankings! Titles on an AK Promotions event are with LEGIT Contenders. Win or lose, ALL of these fighters secure a place in history as they become part of the only Amateur Kickboxing or Muay Thai Rankings in the world! An IKF Title win here doesn't just come with a shinny belt and a soon to be forgotten headline on some unknown website somewhere. A Title win here and a fighter is remembered forever! Be it within the Past IKF Champions Pages or within the IKF Rankings. An IKF win actually "Stands For Something!" As was the case with John "Big Sexy" Hurney! A fighter that wasn't just called up out of the blue and asked, "Hey, want to fight for a title" just to give the impression to the public that the show has some legit title fight on it. No, Hurney, like all IKF Title Contenders had to prove himself and earn his way to "Title Town!" What got us here... Hurney seems to be the same type of fighter. Able to control a bout, but if in trouble, he could always land a heavy hand, or in some cases, a heavy leg! For example, during his "Proving Days" he defeated someone we call a "Knockout Artist" himself as an undefeated (8-0) MMA fighter and at the time, an undefeated (2-0), Kickboxer, Nick Thompson. Hurney disposed of Thompson by Knock Out at 1:04 of round 1 on May 29th, 2010 in Vallejo, California. After Thompson, Hurney (Hurney) was invited to step into the IKF 4 man USA title bracket with 3 other Super Heavyweights, Xavier Vigney of Pleasant Hill, California, USA, 3-0, 250, 6'8", Hugo Dominguez of Patterson, California, USA, 3-1, 220, Manuel Mancha of Sacramento, California, USA, 3-0, 265, 6'3". So it came to be on October 8th, 2010 in Sacramento, California at the event weigh-ins, The 4 Super Heavyweights draw from a hat to determine their match-up on the nights event. Hurney's first opponent sounded like a "David meets Goliath" bout on paper. He would enter the ring with 6'7", 222 lb, Xavier Vigney. Manuel Mancha would meet up with Hugo Dominguez. It was no surprise that Xavier Vigney was highly favored as his height alone towered over the 6'3 Hurney. However, it didn't take long for Hurney to make an instant name for himself as he stopped the big man Vigney by TKO at :59 seconds of round 1. Many at ringside though thought referee Ed Collantes should have given Vigney an 8 count instead of calling the fight over so quickly. It was at this moment that all Vigney would think about for some time was "Rematch!" Regardless, Hurney moved on to fight for the vacant IKF Super Heavyweight USA Title against Manuel Mancha. Mancha made a name for himself as well as he defeated Dominguez by Head Kick Knock Out at :14 seconds into round 1. Needless to say, going into the Title Bout, Everyone now had seen the Knockout Power of the two top contenders. It was January 16th, 2011 in Sacramento, California on yet another AK Promotions event that Hurney and Mancha battled for the vacant IKF Super Heavyweight USA Title. It was a 3 round war that was explained as, "we all witnessed one of the most EXCITING, ACTION PACKED SLUGFESTS we may have ever seen. This bout was not just two big guys throwing hay-makers at each other hoping to land the lucky shot. We're talkin Spin Kicks to the head kind of ACTION! If you blinked, YOU MISSED A LOT! Sure, we have seen better "Methodical" bouts before at a much slower pace that some fight experts would call a "detailed" exhibition of talent... However, to see a total of 505 lbs. in total weight going at it NON STOP for nearly 3 rounds brought back memories of the "Fast Starting - Fast Paced" style of fighting the great former IKF Heavyweight World Champion - Dennis Alexio showed us all at Heavyweight. Sure, in the end there had to be a winner, but in the end, everyone in the Ballroom that night witnessed TWO WINNERS! When rounds 1 and 2 ended Hurney and Mancha came back to their corners with nothing left, as they energized themselves to "Give it their all" for the next round." However, despite it being an exciting bout, there had to be a winner. This battle never made it to the scorecards. In fact, we never had to see the final 2 rounds as Hurney disposed of Mancha by Head Kick Knockout at 1:44 of round 3. As time went by, Hugo Dominguez was out of the title hunt for Hurney to test his skills against. However, both Mancha and Vigney desperately desired to earn their way back for another shot at the Champ. So, on April 30th, 2011 in Lincoln, California, USA Vigney and Mancha stepped up to fight for the vacant IKF Amateur Muay Thai California Super Heavyweight title. In the end, we saw a drastically improved Vigney win the IKF Amateur Muay Thai California Super Heavyweight Title over Mancha by TKO at 1:17 of round 4. When we say "Drastically Improved" what we mean is pretty direct. Against Hurney, Vigney looked confused, not sure of himself and his own potential. He seemed to still be learning how to use his size in his favor as well as his simple weapons such as his jab. However, against Mancha, he had not only found his confidence, but also his jab, his cross, his knees and a load of other weapons he and trainer Dan Black had worked on. In a short time, Black had transformed the 6'7" Vigney into a legit "Fighting Machine!" He was tall, but no longer slow and sloppy. His punches snapped, and snapped the heads of his opponents as well. He had proven he truly deserved to meet Hurney again in a much desired rematch for Hurney's IKF USA Title. So be it, which brings us to this past Friday night. This would be Hurney's first IKF title defense of the title he won on October 8th, 2010 in Sacramento, California, USA. There is an old saying in the fight game, "It's easier to go after the title than it is to defend it." A lesson Hurney seemed to learn on this night. We're not saying Hurney didn't want to win, or didn't want to stay on top. However, what we are saying is that the Hurney we saw this past Friday night was not the "HUNGRY" Hurney we saw back in October when he won the title. From start to finish, Xavier Vigney showed he wanted what he thought should have been his in the first place. As he saw it, he and others thought Referee Ed Collantes took from him back in October what was his in the first place. The IKF Super Heavyweight USA Title that another man was wearing around his waist. Collantes did as he's required to do. Act on the side of Safety. However, to Vigney, Safety was a scorned word. In the ring with him this time would be a more seasoned, experienced referee, Dan Stell. From the opening bell, many at ringside were looking to see if Vigney's jaw would survive the hard shots we all knew Hurney would throw. There would be no doubt Hurney wanted this to be over quick. He's never been deep into rounds and no one knew how he would be if he had to go there. As we went through round 1, we all saw that Vigney not only survived some of those heavy hands of Hurney, but he walked right through a few. Vigney was composed and more so, ACCURATE! He never seemed to get winded and always seemed to find the target he was looking for on Hurney. By the time this bout hit the final round, Vigney had it in the bag. Still, he didn't just run away as some may have done to secure the title. He went after Hurney, forcing referee Dan Stell to give 2 standing 8 counts. Unlike Collantes, Stell let these two throw down to the end. Throughout the 5th and final round, Hurney kept throwing his bombs that some thought, if landed, would be the game changer. However, none of them even came close. Even if they did, Vigney was so relaxed and composed, he simply slipped them by. As the final bell sounded, there was no doubt from anyone. We all knew there was a new Champion, and a proud one at that as Xavier Vigney improved his record to 7-1/3 as he defeated and took from Hurney, (5-1/2) the IKF Super Heavyweight USA Title he sought this past Fall by unanimous decision, 49-44 on all 3 judges cards. Congratulation to Xavier Vigney as he becomes the new IKF Amateur Muay Thai Super Heavyweight Champion... What's next? Well, if we were guessing men, we would say, it's time for Hurney to chase after something now, and a rematch wouldn't surprise us here at all. :) Below are the full details of the night...
