What an event on Saturday night in the
Menlo Park Hotel, Galway!!!

Every fight was quality! The Title Fights were off the chart! Boxing, Kickboxing, K-1 at the highest level, top class overseas fighters from France & the UK that were an absolute pleasure to deal with. The same to be said for all the fighters & coaches that travelled from all over Ireland. Fantastic and extremely vocal fight fans, full to the neck house, fantastic music & sound system by Galways main man big Pa Murphy. Top class refereeing and judging by our completely NEUTRAL Officials who also came from all over Ireland. Everything was on cue, fight card went exactly to plan. Free finger food handed out to the spectators midway through the show and antastic teamwork from all our dedicated set up crew, door staff and corner staff.

Interviews & podcasts by Galway Bay FM including professional commentary from John Mulligan and Clodagh Foley. Top team of medics courtesy of the Order Of Malta that looked after all the fighters so well, headed up by the fight doctor, Dr Maura Grummell. Fighters were escorted to the ring by Sword Security who did a great job on crowd control. Some class Technichal fights and fantastic knockouts & stoppages. New champions crowned, some tears & emotions, but most of all - Kickboxing in Galway is in an extremely healthy state and with fight nights like these, it really can't fail.

Pete Foley introduced the sport of Kickboxing to Galway in 1996 and since then the sport has gone through the roof. He has seen some amazing talent pass through the doors of Black Dragon over the last two decades and like a smooth as silk assembly line, the club just keeps churning them out.

Ten year old Josh Mc Hugh opened the show and was amazing, winning all three rounds. Jamie O Sullivan and Thomas Scarry, both clubmates, had a cracker of a White Collar Boxing match with Jamie getting the win. Thirteen year old Wesley Ward won by KO in round two over Wexfords Brandon Maltby in what will surely be one of the KO's of the year. Sarah Worsfold from the UK defeated Regina Fanning in an eliminator fight. Gerry King stole the show with another crazy entrance and went on to get the win.

17 year old Saoirse Joyce from Knocknacarra destroyed her opponent Aisling Frayne from Wexford who was 10 years her senior, stopping her hard in the second round. Saoirse will fly to Italy in October with IKF Team Ireland to fight in the Unified World Championships - The largest ever Martial Arts Games on the planet of which the IKF and a load of other sanctioning organizations is associated with. Leona Trautt made her boxing debut against a boxer from Cavin Boxing Club and won a unanimous verdict. Adam Keane from Tuam & Johnny Mc Donagh from Wexford had an absolute war with Johnny getting the nod and with it a shot at the IKF Irish title.

Cian Mc Cormac from Kinvara (Sponsored by Joe Mc Cormack Electrical) won the IKF Junior Irish K-1 Lightweight title by stoppage with KNEE strikes in the fourth round. James Kelly from Athenry (Sponsored by Western Beverages) &Catherine Cullinan from Claregalway (Sponsored by Ballybrit Exhaust & Tyres and Core Fitness in Claregalway Hotel) were unlucky but put in fine performances that went to the wire. Charlie Ward (Sponsored by Headmasters Barbers) does what Charlie does best - win fights in style and retained his IKF 5 Nations Crown by defeating teak tough two weight British Champion Gareth Evans from Romford by unanimous decision.

Paul Huish (Sponsored by City & County Bouncy Castles) put the icing on the cake by winning the IKF K-1 Rules European Super Lightweight Title in a class main event against World Class French fighter Jonathan Maine.

The Galway Black Dragon Kickboxing club have a new adults beginners course starting on Tuesday 14 October at 7pm and booking can be made by calling 087 8119227. The next show for Galway Black Dragon is the IKF Junior National Championships in the Oranmore Community Centre, Oranmore, Co. Galway on Sunday October 12.

IKF East Coast Classic Amateur Muay Thai & Kickboxing Tournament!

For all you fighters who keep asking
"When is the Next Event?
Why can't I Fight for a Title?"
Well...
THIS IS YOUR MOMENT!

Origionally scheduled for October 10th, 11th and 12th in Dillon, South Carolina, the tournament will now only be two days! Registration and weigh-ins will take place on Friday, October 10th. Elimination and Championships will be on Saturday October 11th. After careful consideration of all the aspects of the event, AK Promotions President Johnny Davis (Right, The host of the event) noted,

"Last year we had about 15 fights a day and each day was done like an individual show with music and fighter walkouts. The fans loved it! However, we finished early each day and had a lot of down time. This year, fighters and fans can get back on road the same day or at least early Sunday morning and with school and job obligations, this can only be a good thing. It is our mission to give fighters a nice and safe platform to compete, while giving fight fans a great show. I feel this move will do both!"

Additionally though, if registration goes beyond expectations, we can always add another Ring to expedite the event.

Looking at the pace of registration, this year will be similar participation as last year, which will make an exciting event but can be done in two day as oppose to three. Fighters will register on Friday starting at noon and should be prepared to fight their elimination early on Saturday morning and their Championship bout on Saturday afternoon/evening.

Fighting twice on the first day and once or twice in some cases on the next day is actually the design of these tournaments but is normally only needed when the brackets have 5 or more people in them. Of course in larger tournaments like the IKF World Classic, competitors may fight up to three or possibly even 4 times through the event weekend before being crowned Champion. this of course can be an awesome task. As always, full safety gear and the upmost care will be available for fighters including Doctors and ALS Transport unit etc. However, if a doctor feels that one is not able to compete in a second bout, the appropriate decision will be made and the injured fighter will be pulled from the event.

Additionally, having the elimination and finals on the same day will also give a full day of travel time on Sunday. It will allow fight fans to know they are only giving up one day as oppose to giving up their entire weekend and not knowing what day their fighter will be up which could complicate travel plans. Moreover, dropping the 3rd day of the event will also help save some $$ on rooms nights needed at the hotel, additional food etc. It just seems like a win, win for everyone.

Now, dropping the third day will also limit how many fighters can sign up in a division which will be a maximum of 4!
However AK Promotions is open to creating a new division if needed for additional fighters.

However they will have to register by this Friday, September 12…

However again, that's only if there are more than 4 people in a division and others sign up for the newly created division. Otherwise, the extra fighter will have the following choices:

Fighters should be reminded that they can register all the way up to October 6th
For the
IKF East Coast Muay Thai Kickboxing Classic Full Contact Event
but that depends on availability for divisions and their willingness to pay the late registration fee.

It's hasn't been uncommon to see IKF and ISCF Champions who made a name for themselves appearing on the big stage promotions of the World. There are those who few knew such as Cariaso and Thompson who one day brought home some IKF Gold and within a blink of an eye, they were the focus of fight fans around the world on some of the biggest stages of the world.

As an example, just this past summer on June 21st, 2014 in Inglewood, California, USA, the Mega Kickboxing Promotion known as Glory came to California and hosted their GLORY 17, "LAST MAN STANDING" event. The event was regulated by the IKF and of course the California State Athletic Commission. The event featured former 2009 IKF World Classic Champion, Joseph Valtellini of Scarboraugh, Ontario, Canada fighting for the Glory Welterweight title. In the end, Valtellini defeated Marc de Bonte by unanimous decision to become the new Glory Champion.

Valtellini isn't the only Amateur or Pro Fighter who took home IKF Gold on his way to the top. MANY more can be found among the results of the past IKF Tournaments as well on the Past IKF Champions Pages or in the as the IKF World Rankings.

And don't forget the ISCF Champions that be seen on the Past ISCF MMA Champions page or if still active, in the ISCF MMA Rankings.

This Saturday night, we will get to see two fighters in action who together took home plenty of gold, and some of their Gold just so happens to be from the IKF and the ISCF.

At this Saturday's UFC 178 in Las Vegas, Nevada, the Main Event will feature Number 1 ISCF MMA Ranked and current UFC Champion Demetrious Johnson of Kirkland, Washington, USA (20-2-1) take on current ISCF Pro MMA Bantamweight world champion Chris "Kamikaze" Cariaso of San Francisco, California, USA. ( 17-5, KB/MT: 17-3/2, TRAINER: Bunkerd Faphiamai, Fight and Fitness)

Chris won his ISCF MMA World Title on October 24th, 2009 in Richmond, California, USA on the Paco/LTD Productions' "RUMBLE IN RICHMOND" event when he defeated Rolando Velasco by TKO at 3:17 of round 2 due to strikes.

However, that's not the only Gold Chris took home from under the umbrella of
International Fight Sports.

Prior to becoming a Pro MMA fighter Chris also won the IKF Amateur San Shou Rules United States Super Lightweight title when he defeated Ed Carpio of San Jose, California by Split Decision on July 24th, 2004 in San Jose, California.

This will be the first time an "ISCF" World Champion has fought for a Major MMA Promotions title and since it's a UFC Title, it just doesn't get any bigger than that. However, Chris is not the only IKF Champion fighting on a UFC event or fighting for a UFC Title. Both Chuck Liddell (IKF Amateur USA Champion) and Cung Le (IKF Pro World Champion) have not only done so, but as everyone knows, won their titles and went on to be major stars in the fight world.



But Wait.. THERE'S MORE...

On that same UFC 178 fight card we will also get to see multiple time IKF Champion Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson of Simpsonville, South Carolina, USA (9-1, Pro KB: 12-0/7, Pro Team: 6-0/3, AKB: 33-0/18) take on Patrick Cote (20-8) in Thompson's 3rd UFC appearance. Thompson went through his entire Amateur and Pro Kickboxing career undefeated, and might still be if not for the work of another ISCF Pro MMA Champion, Matt "The Immortal" Brown of Xenia, Ohio, USA (P: 18-11, A: 2-0)

Prior to meeting up with Thompson, Brown won his ISCF Pro East Coast Welterweight Title over current Bellator Welterweight Champion Douglas Lima by referee stoppage due to strikes at 2:50 of the second round on February 9th, 2007 in Kennesaw, (Atlanta) Georgia, USA.

Brown and Thompson met up on UFC 145 on April 21st, 2012. After the smoke cleared after 3 rounds, Brown won the judges over with a unanimous decision victory. It was Thompson's first loss of his fighting career.

Since then, Thompson has come back with three straight wins in the UFC Octagon. After Brown he came back and defeated Nah-Shon Burrell at UFC 160 on May 25th, 2013 by unanimous decision. He next defeated Chris Clements at UFC 165 last year on September 21st, 2013 by TKO at 1:27 of round 2. And then he defeated Robert Whittaker at UFC 170 this past February 22nd, 2014 by TKO at 3:43 of round 1. To say he's on a mission to re-gain his familiar top ranking position is an understatement.

However Brown hasn't been quiet either. Since defeating Thompson he's rattled off 6 straight UFC wins before being beat by Robbie Lawler at UFC on Fox 12 on July 26, 2014.

Needless to say, Thompson is eager to get back in the cage yet again and more eager to hit someone in the face... But will it be with his hands which have been a major weapon of choice in most of his MMA fights, or by one of his devastating head kicks that made him a World Champion in Kickboxing and also took him to an impressive Head Kick KO Victory in his UFC debut, who knows.

All we can say is us IKF and ISCF Fight fans will have plenty to root for this Saturday night. Of course we're hoping for big wins for both Cariaso and Thompson. However, just getting to where they are in their fight careers is alone something we are proud of them accomplishing. We're just blessed to have wrapped some IKF and ISCF Gold around these athletes along the way.

The heat, humidity, and other weather could not keep the IKF action from returning to southern Georgia this past weekend thanks to the South Georgia Fighting Championship promotion. Promoter Scott Harper brought forth another great event featuring IKF Kickboxing as well as grappling and MMA action.

A great time was had by all as "Border Wars" was enacted at the scenic open air Wiregrass Arena in Nicholls, Georgia. Over 1,500 spectators were present with over 70 VIP tables packed surrounding the cage. In the later matches of the event, the open venue was pelleted with a heavy rain shower, thankfully cooling things down, but made for deafening noise on the roof of the venue. Dauntless, the fighters, officials, and spectators carried on to make this event spectacular.

The theme of "Border Wars" highlighted fighters from the various communities in south Georgia. The emcee, for example, would begin matches with, "The next Border Wars match will feature Alma versus Waycross … ," and the fighters would come forth and fight for the honor of their friends and neighbors in that community.

  1. IKF JUNIOR AMATEUR
    INTERNATIONAL KICKBOXING RULES – SUPER WELTERWEIGHT - 150
    Spencer Mullis (Douglas, GA, USA, 1-0, 150, 5, 9", Scott Harper (912) 592-6858) VS David Judge (Pearson, GA, USA, 0-1, 150, 5'9", Independent)
    This bout featured a more technical fighter who prevailed against his opponent. Mullis began the match stalking his opponent with jabs and landing head kicks. He continued through the match at his opponent. His opponent would occasionally rally and land some shots as he flurried.
    WINNER: Spencer Mullis by unanimous decision.
    REFEREE: Jeff Kemp
    Judge Nick Panousis: 30-27, Judge Matthew Waller: 30-27, Judge Brad Justice: 30-27.

  2. IKF JUNIOR AMATEUR
    INTERNATIONAL KICKBOXING RULES – FEATHERWEIGHT – 125
    Keyshawn Mays (Tifton, GA, USA, 0-1 125, Walter McCall (229) 402-4167) VS Dillon Christopher (Baxley, GA, USA, 1-0 125, (912) 367-6021)
    An exciting match between two juniors with bright futures in the IKF was next up. Keyshawn Mays dominated the first round with amazing footwork. Christopher preserved as Mays cardio waned in the second and third rounds. Mays was given a standing 8 count in the second.
    WINNER: Dillon Christopher by unanimous decision.

  3. IKF JUNIOR AMATEUR
    INTERNATIONAL KICKBOXING RULES – SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT – 135
    Johnny Villa Franca (Tifton, GA, USA, 0-1 135, Walter McCall (229) 402-4167) VS Dalton Durden (Douglas, GA, USA, 2-0 135, Scott Harper (912) 592-6858)
    This match had a real contrast in physiques and styles. The shorter Franca had trouble with the reach of Durden. Franca landed several strong spinning backfists while Durden landed head kicks and plenty of jabs as Franca tried to close the distance.
    WINNER: Dalton Durden by unanimous decision.
    REFEREE: Jeff Kemp
    Judge Nick Panousis: 29-28, Judge Matthew Waller: 30-27, Judge Brad Justice: 30-27.

  4. IKF JUNIOR AMATEUR
    INTERNATIONAL KICKBOXING RULES – CATCH WEIGHT – 165
    Cody Ford (Moultrie, GA, USA, 3-0 165, Richard Cox (229) 200 – 9219) VS Jacob Fuller (Douglas, GA. USA, 2-0 165 6'2", Scott Harper (912) 592-6858)
    A more active and conditioned fighter dominated in this exciting bout. Ford would land hard, sharp leg kicks as Fuller plodded with hands down. Ford's tendency towards Muay Thai style frustrated himself somewhat but not enough to earn any point infractions from the referee. Fuller's best defense was to jab and circle while Ford executed various offenses including a superman punch and hard body kicks.
    WINNER: Cody Ford by unanimous decision.
    REFEREE: John Cofer
    Judge Nick Panousis: 30-27, Judge Matthew Waller: 30-27, Judge Brad Justice: 29-28.
