IKF IN NEED OF
LEADERSHIP EXPANSION

Appoints South East Director of Operations
Seeking Representatives And Event Officials To Assist With Expansion In Promotion And Championship Opportunities On The East Coast

All of us here at International Fight Sports {www.ifightsports.com} would like to introduce to you our new IKF South East Director of Operations, Johnny Davis. As many here know, Johnny has been aligned with the IKF for over 20 years. Most know him today as President of IKF Point Kickboxing, (IKFPKB) the a semi-contact branch of IKF Kickboxing & Muay Thai that he created in 2002. Others may know him as a promoter of IKF Events under his promotional company name, AK Promotions. Johnny was also a two time world champion Kickboxer back in the 80's where he won the PKA Welterweight world title in 1985 and the FFKA Light Middleweight World title in 1987. He also won the ISKA United States title and four other titles.

After moving to California 25 years ago from South Carolina, Johnny was one of the first IKF Promoters holding his first IKF Sanctioned event on May 11th, 1996 in Hayward, California, USA. he hit the ground running in assisting the newly formed IKF. In 1995, Davis would begin writing his Autobiographical Kickboxing Training Manual (Right) that was published in 2002 and was endorsed by the IKF. The manual was well received and martial arts top magazines, Black Belt noted it as perhaps one of the best manuals every written for the sport of Kickboxing and complemented it with a five page layout in their internationally distributed magazine. In 2000 he was appointed Director of Marketing for the IKF in helping get the letters of the IKF branded with trainers around the United States and abroad. A year or so later, he would produced his Kickboxing Training DVD that was also endorsed by the IKF.

Davis' passion for the sport of Kickboxing has always been a recognized staple for the IKF. He's written many essays and articles promoting the sport as well as motivating fighters and trainers alike to support the IKF and the great sport of Kickboxing. (For Articles Click Here.)

Over the years, while in California, Davis took on several political projects like helping open the door for junior fighters under the age of 15 years old to compete in sanctioned full contact Kickboxing events in the State of California. After promoting many juniors on his shows, he would later hold the first IKF Junior Amateur World title bout in the State in 2012 in Oakland, California.

In 2009 and 2010, he lead a campaign supported by the IKF's President and CEO Steve Fossum, then Athletic Commission Staffer Rebecca Alvarez and Director of the California Athletic Commission George Dodd who arranged a meeting with the Department of Consumer Affairs to allow the IKF to bring the first official Kickboxing Tournament that allowed more than one fight in a day to the State.

The IKF West Coast Classic was held in 2011 in Sacramento, California and registered 185 Fighters, 129 who actually fought in the event on a Thanksgiving weekend. The event was deemed a tremendous success by everyone in attendance including the majority of Officials with the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) who were assigned to work the event. Since the IKF West Coast Classic, promotions that feature Tournament style events like Glory have been allowed to hold their shows in the state giving California fight fans yet another opportunity to enjoy the great sport of Kickboxing.

In his final years in California, Davis' Amateur Kickboxing Promotions under the guise of AK Promotions. were some of the more popular kickboxing events in Northern, California. His shows had a Las Vegas appeal and thousands of fans packed ballrooms for several years.

Moreover, there were many champions crowned and some now have professional careers while others are in pursuit. Since moving back to the South Carolina to care for his now deceased mother, he has held two successful IKF East Coast Classic Tournaments. His 2014 tournament registered approximately 100 fighters. Not too bad for an area that basically dried up over the years in regards to the sport of Kickboxing, mainly due to the sport of Mixed Martial Arts.

With his new role of IKF South East Director of Operations, he will among other things, continue to promote IKF Kickboxing and build an IKF East Coast Brand. Promotions include more single and tournament events. As well as recruiting, training and coordinating a solid team of IKF Representatives and qualified officials to help (along with State Commissions) both amateur and professional Kickboxing events in States across the South East.

The IKF's plan is to help Davis build the South East which will hope to move into overseeing and building the entire East Coast region. Davis' work at the position will be to seek out new and current promoters as well as building and grooming many new IKF Kickboxing Champions from IKF Point/Semi Contact fighting all the way to Full Contact Muay Thai Kickboxing.

Davis noted "First, I'm thankful to Steve Fossum for this appointment and his trust. I'm delighted to have an opportunity to grow the IKF on the East Coast! I've been committed to the letters of IKF since inception. Although the IKF has grown tremendously over the years, there is still so much more growth to be accomplished and I look forward to continuing to help move it forward. Additionally, I will be putting together a great game-plan and I'm looking forward to speaking and working with everyone interested in growing the IKF and the sport of Kickboxing in the South East and eventually the entire East Coast. As things are coming together, I welcome those of you who are passionate about growing the IKF in your area to contact me if you are interested in becoming part of the IKFSouth East and East Coast Team. Thanks in advance for your support in taking the IKF and sport of Kickboxing and Muay Thai to its deserving magnitude…talk to you soon…Forward March!"

This decision is in line with the IKF's plans to appoint more and more State and Regional Directors around North America to help grow the IKF as was done in California this past year where the IKF Sanctioned over 40 events. these appointments will give IKF Promoters, Officials and associates a closer local contact to get things done. We look forward to the great things Johnny and his team of associates and officials will accomplish in growing the IKF in the South East and beyond.

Davis' current region will include 7 States which are shown in red on the map at the right. They include:

  • Virginia
  • North Carolina
  • South Carolina
  • Georgia
  • Florida
  • Alabama
  • Tennessee

Former 2 Time IKF Amateur World Champion
Chad Sugden
Chooses IKF Gold Over Glory!

-Turns Down Bout against USA's Raymond Daniels at GLORY 21...At Least For Now...

After his impressive display against Atakan Arslan at GLORY 20: Dubai, Chad Sugden (Pro: 13-3) made his successful debut on the GLORY world stage, immediately putting himself into the spotlight as a potential future star in the promotion. It was announced during his bout with Arslan by GLORY commentator Mauro Ranallo that the winner would advance to GLORY 21: San Diego on May 8 to face karate sensation Raymond Daniels.

The Sugden vs. Daniels match-up brought a truly intriguing taste for kickboxing fans, with Daniels's two GLORY losses coming to prominent classic kickboxing styles from another IKF Amateur World Champion Joseph Valtellini ( PHOTO AM: 11-0, PRO: 11-2 with 10 win by KO/TKO) and number 3 IKF Pro Muay Thai Ranked Super Middleweight Nieky Holzken.

Sugden's strong point is his boxing and ability to fight on the inside. Valtellini's two losses were to Holzken and to current IKF Pro Intercontinental Middleweight Champion Gregory Choplin.

However, it was recently announced that Sugden would no longer compete in California, being replaced by MMA Fighter Justin Baesman, in the co-main event. Baesman was a surprising choice since he is an MMA fighter and is a 0-0 as a Kickboxer and is 2-4-1 in his last 7 MMA bouts since September of 2013. One of those loses included a loss to MMA fighter David Mitchell who's one of the Champions in the IKF's sister organizations for sanctioning MMA, The ISCF (International Sport Combat Federation - www.ISCFMMA.com.

Sugden spoke about turning down the Daniels fight:

"I am not fighting Raymond Daniels because I got some local business to deal with first. I am a professional and financially it makes more sense to fight in the UK especially given my huge fan base. It's a fight me versus Michael Wakeling that the kickboxing and muay thai worlds have been anticipating for some time as contracts were signed since the back end of last year."

Sugden will face number 3 IKF Ranked Middleweight Michael Wakeling (29-1-1) on May 23 in Birmingham, England for the IKF World title, in an all British encounter the United Kingdom has desired for years. (Poster at Right)

Chad's decision to decline the Daniels fight is mightily plausible, with two potential career defining match-ups separated by 14 days, there was no way he would be able to fight both at full strength. Coach Dean Sugden furthered his son's explanation but hinted towards a major announcement should Chad defeat Wakeling on The Main Event:

"It was great to get the offer to fight on GLORY 21: San Diego against Raymond Daniels, but we had already committed to the Wakeling fight. Chad ordinarily would of jumped at the chance to put his skills to the test against Daniels. Personally think it would of been a great fight. That said when we fought and beat Atakan Arslan on GLORY 20: Dubai, Michael Wakeling was already signed and in our focus. Once we have taken care out business on 23rd May then we will be making a huge announcement."

Sugden won two IKF Amateur World titles. His first was the IKF Junior Amateur FCR Lightweight World Title which he won on November 29th 2009 in Rochester, Kent, England when he defeated Charlie Ward by unanimous decision, 45-50, 47-48, 46-50. He also won the IKF Junior Amateur FCR Welterweight World Title on October 16th, 2010 in Kelham, England when he defeated David Lenson (USA) Staten Island, New York USA, 18-2 by unanimous decision. 50-44, 49-45, 49-45.

IKF Remembers The Rock!

KEVIN ROSIER

If you search for any news about Kevin Rosier's passing over the last week, all you read are headlines such as "One of the first men to set foot in a cage to participate in no holds barred combat has passed". It seems like the media only want him to be remembered as a veteran pioneer of MMA. However, Kevin didn't make his name in MMA. Kevin made his name as a Professional Kickboxer who once done had a "combined" career record (Amateur & Pro) of *66-8 with all 66 of his wins coming by way of KO/TKO. Not to mention the number of titles he won which included...

  • 1987 United States Kung-Fu Karate National No-Rules Tournament Champion.
  • 1989 All Japan World Champion
  • 3 Time WKA World Super Heavyweight Champion.
  • 1990 ISKA North American Super Heavyweight Champion.
  • 1990 WKA World Super Heavyweight Champion (above the waist).
  • 1994 WKKC World Super Heavyweight Champion
    • (*) Some sources say his record was 50-3 with 42 Ko's, but who knows for sure...

On April 14, 2015 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee at only 53 years old,
Kevin Rosier left us all following a severe heart attack.
"He's one of God's Champions now..."

January 6, 1962 - April 13, 2015

He was not just a fighter in the ring though. He was a military veteran who spent much of his early years living in upstate New York. He began his martial arts training at the Boys Club in East Aurora, New York. He earned his first black belt from Sensei William James Gallant. Since then, he traveled the world fighting in martial arts and professional boxing tournaments. All the while Rosier was working as a bodyguard for entertainers like Rick James, Billy Idol and Debbie Harry. Nightclubs like Studio 54, Limelight and CBGB frequently retained his services as a bouncer. As a Professional Kickboxer Kevin was no small fighter. Standing 6'4" and weighing in at about 285 lbs he came to the ring with a lot of power.

As noted above, many remember Kevin for his appearance in 1993 in the very first -original- UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) event at McNichols Arena in Denver, Colorado on November 12, 1993. In his first MMA bout he faced and defeated Zane Frazier by TKO at 4:20 of round number 1 in the first round of the Tournament. In round 2 of the tournament he was defeated by French Savate/Samboo Champion Gerard Gordeau of Amsterdam, Holland. Gordeau went on to lose to Royce Gracie by submission. Although he was not a big champion in mma, he clearly was in Kickboxing. Sadly people remember him as an mma fighter, but SHOULD remember him as a Champion Kickboxer instead.

In his travels he trained with the best in the world, earning multiple high-degree black belts and red sashes in a variety of styles. He was always one of those fighters who would accept a fight under any rule style, any time. From Karate to MMA, Boxing to Kickboxing, Rosier fought it all.

Sadly, Kevin's later years were not so good to him. He had been suffering from longtime health problems, and the complications of a lifetime spent in combat sports.

However, more so, this is the kind of guy Kevin was to those around him...
In Art Davie's book Is This Legal? (Davie created the UFC) Davie recalls the character who was Rosier;

"Rosier was the first fighter to arrive at the UFC After Party, and he was wearing a circa-1975 tux, complete with huge flower cumberbund. He looked as joyous as if he had won the tournament and greeted Davie with a huge hug. "He then proclaimed he was my long-lost son, and that now he was going to call me "Dad." Rosier then excused himself, and said he wanted to go looking for John McCarthy, so that he could challenge him to a pizza-eating contest. There's no word on who won that pizza-eating contest, but Rosier went on to fight six more MMA bouts from 1994 to 2000. Between 1989 and 2001 he had 25 professional boxing matches as well. Another pioneering MMA promoter, Monte Cox, recalled his experiences with Rosier in a post on The Underground Forum: Kevin fought for me twice back in 1998, taking on Dan Severn. After the first loss in 53 seconds, Kevin came to my room where I was talking with John Perretti. Kevin says "OK, he out-wrestled me. If I gotta go to the Miletich school and learn wrestling for a week or two I will do it." Peretti and I laughed and John said, "Let's see, Severn is a collegiate All-American and Olympic alternate who has been wrestling for about 30 years… yep, I'd say a week or two at the most." Kevin began working on his takedown defense and called me to fight Severn again. He swore he would do better, and he did, lasting 7 more seconds. Afterwards, he said "Monte, you had to see the improvement, right?"

Kevin was fun to be around and always made people laugh. It's sad his life came to an end so soon. He will be missed..

From all of us here at the IKF, we know you're resting well now Champ... Because as we all know...

You're one of God's Champions now..."

2011 IKF World Classic Champion
Stephen Copeland Passes

2011 IKF World Classic Champion Stephen Copeland passed away Monday, after collapsing during a Boxing match Saturday night. Copeland, 28, competed in the USA Boxing's Golden Gloves Tournament at the Hampton Roads Convention Center in Hampton Virginia, USA over the weekend.

According to his trainer, Roger Blech, Copeland won his match Friday night and the two laughed and joked before his Saturday match against a boxer with less experience. "Looked like he was going to win this one," Belch said. "If he was taking punishment, I would've stopped the fight."

During his match, he took a blow to the head (Some reports say this was to the back of his head) which caused him to collapse and stop breathing. He was successfully resuscitated and transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center where surgery was performed to remove a blood clot that had formed and also a piece of his skull to help relieve pressure on his brain.

During his match, Copeland took a blow to the head which caused him to collapse and stop breathing. He got up and walked unsteadily over to Belch in his corner, where he began vomiting and laid down. Belch said doctors stepped in right away, and first responders rushed Copeland to a local hospital. Doctors performed surgery to relieve swelling on Copeland's brain that night to remove a blood clot that had formed and also a piece of his skull to help relieve pressure on his brain. However he never came out of his coma and sadly, he passed away at 6:50 pm, EST Monday night.

Belch said Copeland would have no regrets. "I believe that Steven was where he wanted to be, if something happened to him. In that ring, that's his home." In the waiting room at the hospital, at least 25 people stood together, waiting to see Copeland before he drew his last breath. That support extended through the tournament, where Belch said everything stopped when he walked in the next day. "They all started praying for that young man, and it brought me to my knees, seeing how much people cared," Blech said.

  • Copeland's friends and family set up two online funds to help with his medical expenses:

At the 2011 IKF World Classic, Copeland of Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA and trained by Tom Poey (11-5/4, AMMA: 1-0, 140, 5'8", 24) won the Tournament International Rules Lightweight title when he defeated Lantz Edward Nave II (Independence, Missouri, USA, 6-2/1, 140, 5'5", 21) in the Championship bout by TKO at :44 seconds of round 3. Copeland made it to the finals after his prelim victory over James Patrick Ellison (Port Orange, Florida, USA 6-3/1, 140, 6', 21) by split decision, 30-27, 29-28 & 27-30.

Is It Time To Say GOODBYE To
Above The Waist / Full Contact / American Style Kickboxing?

It may be...
The IKF had made April 1st it's internal date to see if there would be at least 30 Registered Fighters under the "Full Contact/Above The Waist" Rule style for this years 2015 IKF World Classic. Well, after today's updates, there is Good News and Bad news...

The good News is that at this time last year (Prior to the IKF Classic? Tournament date / About 3 months out) the 2014 IKF World Classic had 38 fighters registered which ended up being a total of 310 Registered Fighters for the 2014 IKF World Classic. Today, a little over 3 months away from this years 2015 Tournament, the IKF has 56 registered fighters

The bad news is for the "Full Contact/Above The Waist" Rule style fighter's and fans. Of those 56, only "10" are Registered in the "Full Contact/Above The Waist" Rule style.

So WHAT does this mean?
Well, the IKF has a meeting this coming Wednesday, April 15th, where several issues regarding this years 2015 IKF World Classic will be discussed. Now, among them will be whether to keep or eliminate the "Full Contact/Above The Waist" Rule style from the 2015 IKF World Classic. If your a trainer or fighters who wants to see this rule style stay, you may want to speak up, and not just speak up here, but speak up by getting your fighters registered into the "Full Contact/Above The Waist" Rule style before Wednesday's 1 PM / PST meeting.

However, maybe the "Full Contact/Above The Waist" Rule style fighters, trainers and fans have already spoken... And the answer was only "10" registered Fighters...

So what happens if the IKF eliminates the "Full Contact/Above The Waist" Rule style at the 2015 IKF World Classic? Will we see "Another" rule style take it's place? Or will the IKF be happy to just narrow down the rule style divisions to only two (Muay Thai and International/Leg Kick) in hopes of stronger divisions...

We will know by Wednesday afternoon...
Sadly, the rule style of "Full Contact/Above The Waist" that started the sport of Kickboxing here in the USA may be gone for good. With it, the fancy, deceptive and explosive kicks of the style too. Change is coming everyone... some like it, some don't... But regardless, it's coming whether we like it or not...
