"Kicking in Kentucky"
July 2nd, 2016 - Liberty, Kentucky, USA
By Johnny Davis
Mr.
Rodney Finn's "Kicking in Kentucky" IKF
Kickboxing show was one of the most unique events every witnessed by this
representative... but you know what? It still turned out pretty 'darn'
good! We made the necessary adjustments and moved forward with the event!
Kentucky has not seen Kickboxing for 16 years, so of course we expected some
bumps but Mr. Finn deserves congratulations for his efforts in bringing
so many fighters together after such a long absence of Kickboxing events in the
area! Great Job Rodney Finn!
The daytime competition started around 11:30 AM with a an IKF Point Kickboxing (PKB) Sparring Tournament that everyone (Men, Women and Juniors) seemed to really enjoy and based on the smiles and tears shed in the winning and losing efforts it was fun and safe and that's what matters most!
This event was a first for many of the competitors in the PKB but one has a feeling, it will not be the last time they try their skills at this exciting semi contact division! The talent of some of the competitors speaks volumes for the future of Kickboxing if we can continue to coordinate, support and build fighters properly! IKF Point Kickboxing Sparring tournaments are indeed the first step out of the gym and a great incubator for our sport!
There was a delay for the night show due to the event being in conjunction with the Casey County Agricultural Fair that had several other events including a 'Cow Beauty Pageant' (You heard me right!) A cow beauty contest!... that ran overtime and made us run a little behind schedule as well. Of course we did not want to upset the cows and cause a stampede either! :) However, when the cows went home, we were ready and so were fight fans!
Although most of the fights on the evening card had to be made exhibition fights for various reasons because they did not fall in line with IKF Safety Rules & Regulations, fighters still gave the fans what they were looking for Great action! Competitors in the exhibition matches wore larger gloves like in the IKF Point Kickboxing Divisions smaller kids wore 12 oz while all adults wore 16.oz Gloves. Knockouts were not allowed but of course they were closely monitored by Referee Gary Campbell. Both fighters had their hands raised at the end of each bout as "Exhibition" bouts do not count on their fight records. Those on the show got in some good sparring and experience fighting in front of a crowd which may prove very valuable down the road.
We're looking forward to hosting ongoing IKF PKB and Full Contact events in the Kentucky / Tennessee area in the not so distant future. This event was a great start to even better things to come! Great having Special Guest, 3 Time IKF Amateur World Champion and rising Boxing Star, Caleb "Sweet Hands" Plant in attendance! Everyone got a real kick meeting this future superstar out of Nashville Tennessee! He was gracious in signing autographs and taking pictures with fans! His next big, televised fight is scheduled the first week of August.
Special thanks to Mr. Finn's entire staff for assisting with the event! The hospitality was very good and everyone was nice and respectful! Of course, big thanks to all the trainers and fighters and fans for their support and patience! Trainers of Record: Mr. Chris Beasley, Mr. Scott Hope, Mr. Donald Neace, Mr. Ian Lawler, Mr. Jeremy Rhodus
