Spike TV, Glory Kickboxing End Partnership After 2-Year Run

Spike TV will no longer televise Glory kickboxing events.
Sources close to Spike TV confirmed the news to Sherdog.com on Tuesday following an initial report from MMAFighting.com. The kickboxing promotion debuted on the network with Glory 11, which took place in Chicago on October 12th, 2013 and saw Rico Verhoeven win a four-man heavyweight championship tournament.

That began a 14-show run on Spike, which peaked with a reported 659,000 viewers for Glory 13, which included a heavyweight showdown between Verhoeven and Peter Aerts as well as a welterweight championship tournament.

The promotion's final event on the Viacom-owned station, Glory 24, drew a reported audience of 283,000 viewers on October 9th, the second-lowest rated card of its tenure on Spike. Bellator MMA on Sept. 19 held an event titled "Dynamite," which featured both mixed martial arts fights and Glory kickboxing bouts. A Bellator official told Sherdog.com that Glory's participation on such a card was not likely to be contingent upon a TV deal with Spike. Plans for a future "Dynamite" event have yet to made, although the promotion is still open to the idea.

According to MMAFighting.com, negotiations between Spike and Glory were ongoing, but the two parties could not reach a new agreement before the current contract expired. The organization's next event, Glory 25, takes place on November 6th in Milan, Italy.

The simple reality here is one word, "CONSISTENCY!"
What made UFC and MMA have such Great Success was not so much the sport itself, but the fact that it aired EVERY week at the SAME TIME!

Whether it be ISKA's Strikeforce Kickboxing of the 90's or Glory, K-1 and even Lion Fights of today, NONE of these promotions will grow to the magnitude the UFC and MMA has without having "Consistent" programming on EVERY week at the same time on the same channel. Strikeforce Kickboxing, Glory, K-1 and Lion Fights are /were ALL GREAT Events!! However, those in charge of the media dynamics have yet to give ANY of them a fair chance to prove themselves. ESPN was the worst when they would air ISKA's Strikeforce Kickboxing like a roll of the dice. No one ever knew when the program was going to air or even if what did air was current.

ISKA's IEC (ISKA Entertainment Company: Mike Sawyer and Scott Coker ) put a lot of time and money into their events and programs back in the 90's and at the time was pretty much the only thing on TV here in the USA for Kickboxing and or Muay Thai. With this latest news of Glory and Spike not coming to terms, it's just more of the same ol thing... The reality is, Kickboxing and or Muay Thai will NEVER get a chance to prove itself of it's fullest potential without a "Consistent" program like Spike TV and the UFC created in the mid 2000's. This just becomes another sad story ending to a Great Sport!

Battle For IKF Gold!


In what was yet another exciting night of Muay Thai Action by Dennis Warner & In Sync Productions, Los Angeles California's Natalie Morgan and Brooklyn, New York's Venus Anne Smith battled toe to toe for almost 5 rounds. In a bout that saw both fighters giving their all, toe to toe, Morgan seemed to get the nod on the majority of the rounds leading Smith on the scorecards 40-36, 49-37 and 39-37 going into the final round.

Smith entered the bout as the Number 1 IKF Ranked Flyweight and had won the 2014 IKF World Classic and the 2014 IKF / WKA Unified World Championship title. Clearly Smith was the favorite going in with a perfect 10-0 record. Smith had her moments too landing several well placed strikes on Morgan throughout the bout.

Rounds 1-4 seemed to be pretty close, and even round 5 was looking to be the same way. However as everyone knows, ANY fight can turn on a single strike and in this case, it seemed to be Morgan's application of the spinning elbow that made the difference. A barrage of punches to Smith's head that started with a right hand and followed with a spinning elbow was the beginning of the end. That followed 3-4 more head punches and after another spinning elbow by Morgan to Smith's jaw, referee Dan Stell stepped in and stop the bout by TKO at 1:42 of round 5.

Morgan improves her record to 13-3-2 as Venus Anne Smith suffers her first loss ever in dropping to 10-1. Not to offer any excuses, Smith's trainer, Dave Wai Moy later noted that Venus had some health issues that took her out of training for close to 6 months, and 10 days before the fight, Venus had a bad fever. "I let Venus fight because she really wanted to fight." said Moy.

Two top ranked fighters gave their all on this night and without a doubt, we look forward to seeing them both in the ring again. Great performances by both, but in the end, Natalie Morgan finished strong and took the title in an impressive performance. Great fight ladies!

The IKF Ireland Junior National Light Contact Championships 2015 were held in the WIT (Waterford Institute Of Technology), Cork Road, Waterford on Sunday 11th October by IKF Promoter Mr. Billy O Sullivan. The event attracted young hopefuls from all over the country. The day was a great success and medals went left, right and centre but most importantly, the future of our sport had a great day out. Big thanks to all clubs, coaches, parents, spectators, officials etc who attended and helped out on the day.

Rebecca D. Alvarez, age 63, born in Stockton, CA, passed away in Lodi, CA with her family by her side. She was a spirited, fun-loving person that loved sharing stories and making people laugh. She was an animal lover and passionate about sports; From her days of playing competitive softball and through her work at the State Athletic Commission. Rebecca was a trailblazer, becoming the first ever female Athletic Inspector in the State of California. Rebecca loved her family and friends. She was a prankster, defender of the underdog and tell-it-like-it-is person. She enjoyed music, dancing and a good joke. She was loyal and true, honest and caring and will be missed by those that knew her.

Rebecca was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Cora Singh of Acampo, CA and is survived by her daughter Mikka Alvarez of Acampo, CA and many other family members.
Services will be held at Cherokee Memorial Cemetery Chapel in Lodi, Harney Lane and Hwy 99. Viewing Friday from 2-3 pm, service immediately following at 3PM.

It is with a heavy heart that we make this announcement
that Fight Sport Inspector Rebecca Alvarez past away around 4 AM this morning.

Rebecca was a former California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) Lead Inspector as well as part of the CSAC Office staff for many years. as an event Inspector she mainly worked in Northern California where she was well known to many, especially those of us with the IKF. She was by far one of the Best Lead Inspectors of the CSAC! Having what we like to call "That Old School Background," Rebecca was able to juggle four main ingredients of a good fight sport inspector. She was dedicated to her job, kept strong discipline when she was in charge, but was also able to keep that discipline in check with her passion and fairness to others.

Rebecca was one of the most knowledgable Inspectors in the business not only in the middle of the action as an event Inspector, but also as part of the CSAC Office Staff. Her knowledge in the various fight sports made her a valuable asset both in the front office and in the field. Her knowledge was so vast that she was often called upon to work with other event promoters as part of their staff or just as a consultant to fine tune their events.

Rebecca's family is in our prayers here at the IKF as we are sure they are with many involved in fight sports here in California over the last 15+ years. Rest in Peace Miss Rebecca... It's now your time to serve a higher purpose with your Dedication, Discipline, Passion and Fairness to others...

Bill "Superfoot"Wallace


Bill "Superfoot" Wallace was one of the true pioneers of Full Contact Karate (Kickboxing).
Today Bill lives in Boynton Beach, Florida but he was born in Portland, Indiana, and trained in wrestling during his high school years. He began his study of Judo in 1963 and was forced to discontinue his Judo related activities due to an injury he suffered during practice in 1966. He completely ripped the ligaments in his right knee. While his knee was healing, He made a decision to learn karate. He began to study Shorin-ryu Karate under Micky Geneck and trained with him from 1966 to 1967.

After advancing rather quickly in his martial arts he entered the point fighting tournament scene and achieved great success. He captured virtually every major event including the U.S. Championships (3 times), the USKA Grand Nationals (3 times), and the Top Ten Nationals (2 times).

Soon later he took up what was at the time, the fledging sport of full contact karate. With the coaching help of veteran fighter Jim 'Ronin' Harrison, he was quickly known for his fast left leg kicks, especially his roundhouse kick and his hook kick, which was clocked at about 60 mph. He focused on his left leg due the Judo-related injury to his right knee, using the right leg primarily as a base.
