IKF World Classic
Amateur Kickboxing Tournament
"Bring It ON!"

The phrase "Time flies when your having fun" could not be more true this year for all of us here at the IKF/ISCF Headquarters. As always, we have been busy with IKF work. However what we didn't expect this time, this year is the over 400% growth of our sister organization for MMA,(Mixed Martial Arts) the ISCF, International Sport Combat Federation. We have sanctioned more ISCF events already this year than the last 3 years combined and it's still growing strong.

However, as with every year, the IKF continues to grow more and more every year and this year is certainly no different. The good news is with the addition of more staff here at IKF/ISCF Headquarters, we now have more time to focus on the work for what will once again be the Largest Amateur Kickboxing Tournament of the Year... The IKF World Classic!

With the big IKF World Classic scheduled almost a month earlier this year (July 28th, 29th and 30th this year, as compared to last year's August 19th, 20th and 21st), it seems like it's "Fight Time" already!



Belts Of The 2003 IKF Tournament


Three of the 5 scheduled Regional Seeding Tournaments have already taken place. There were six planned but due to late scheduling, there was just not enough time to promote the South East Regional so it was cancelled for this year. Only the South Central Regional and the East Central Regional remain. Once they are done on June 10th, the countdown will begin to what is always the Largest Amateur Kickboxing Tournament in North America.

Formerly the IKF USA Nationals, (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 & 2003) then the IKF North American Classic, (2004 & 2005) the tournament has now been opened up to accept any amateur fighter from around the world. The new name... The IKF WORLD CLASSIC.

Once again the Tournament will host over 200 Amateur Kickboxers ages 8 and up. However, the potential of number of fighters is far greater because instead of fighters from just the USA and Canada, this years event will see fighters from around the world. Like in 2003, the event will once again be hosted by Cedar Rapids Iowa.

The winning Hotel bid went to the Crowne Plaza Five Seasons Hotel (Above Left).

For those who were not there in 2003, the Hotel is a 16 Story, 275 Room hotel that also offers Free Airport Shuttle Service. The Hotel is connected directly to the host venue, the Dynamic US Cellular Center Arena!

The US Cellular Center Arena! is a beautiful 28,000 square foot "Stadium Seating Arena" (See Photo at above from 2003 IKF Nationals) which has held the title of the FINEST Venue we have ever had over all the years of the tournament. There is a total of 16,200 square feet on the actual arena floor, and add in the Stadium Seating area and there is plenty of seating for spectators. It is one of the most impressive entertainment venues in the Midwest. It also has 4 locker rooms for the participants and plenty of warm-up area surrounding the outside of the arena bowl.


Belts Of The 2002 IKF Tournament

Last years event (The 6th year of this event) registered 270 Amateur Kickboxers between the ages of 8 and 45. After weigh-ins, the final number of fighters was yet again a new Tournament record of 240 fighters that showed up to "Walk the Walk" to fight a record number of 178 scheduled bouts for the two day event to determine the best amateur kickboxers in North America in their perspective divisions. This year that prestigious title will be for the "Best in the WORLD!"

Previous to weigh-ins we had 252 confirmed to show up at the event. Of them 141 were above the waist Full Contact American rule style Kickboxers, 58 were International leg kick rules and 29 were MuayThai fighters. In the end, there were 71 IKF North American Champions crowned.

This event is by far the Largest Amateur Kickboxing Tournament in North America and has become the standard assessment for amateur kickboxers. It has been the true "Golden Gloves" for Amateur Kickboxing in North America, but will it fill that title for the "World" has yet to be proven.

Here in North America it has been the incubator for the future of the sport and has produced IKF Amateur World Champions such as Anthony McGaughey, Trent "Thunderfoot" Tompkins, Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson (who has went on to be an undefeated Professional Fighter), Scott Clark and most recently this year, 2005 North American Champion Clifford Larson won the IKF Amateur Super Welterweight World Title on April 29th, 2006, at the Yavapia Apache Nation in Camp Verde, Arizona USA when he defeated 2004 IKF North American Champion Darren Snell of Calgary Alberta, Canada.

Lets not forget the first IKF Amateur Woman world Champion either. 2005 IKF North American Classic Champion Jennifer Fowler who won her title earlier this year on February 25th, 2006 in Fairfield, California, USA when she defeated multi time tournament Champion Jenna Droluk by split decision.

There will only be ONE place to find them...
Like every year now for the past 6 years, at the IKF Amateur Championship Tournament! Like those above, over 1,500 Amateur Kickboxers have made their way to the IKF Tournament to "Walk The Walk". However, less than 300 can call themselves "Champions". All of the names of these IKF Champions became world news here on the IKF news page after winning the Tournament.

Whether they went on to fight professionally or win more titles is irrelevant because they became STARS right here before all our eyes. Oh... and of course as previously mentioned, undefeated Pro Fighter Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson. And that's just a few of the many who's road to Professional Kickboxing past through the IKF Amateur Championship Tournament!

There will be no need to invite any special guests to this event. All you have to do is look into one of the fighting rings at any time during the two full days of fighting and there you will find what you are looking for...

This is a reminder to everyone that the first registration deadline for this years 2006 IKF World Classic is June 30th. to review all the registration deadlines please click Here. We are sure some of you are asking, "Where are all the fighters?" after looking at the fighter registration page found HERE.

Well, just to let you know, it is possible that we could wait to post all registered fighters until after the first registration deadline of July 1st. This is because in the past, many have requested us to keep the fight list private until the first deadline to avoid fighters "Dodging" certain opponents and registering instead into a different weightclass or rule style.

Although we can not say we will wait until July, what we can say is that we have held off this long posting any fighters on the registered fighter pages for this exact reason. We look forward to seeing you at the 7th consecutive year of this tournament, and the first time it is open to the "World". The 2006 IKF World Classic.

Once again, IKF Promoter Steve Gosden puts on a spectacular show with a full house and the eagerly awaited show-down between Jason Vassallo and Nick Gill for the IKF Welterweight Challenge. But unfortunately the doctor stopped the fight in round 2 due to accidental clash of heads so the fight was a no contest. Everyone looking forward to the return to find out who is the best Welterweight. Date to be arranged.

"Clash of the Champions IV"
Tigers Gym MMA Arena, India

IKF India Director Daniel Isaac (Right) is excited about the success of his first IKF and ISCF Sanctioned event in India. The Annual Nationals event of the All India Kickboxing Council and the Striking Grapplers Association of India was held at Tigers Gym on 13th May 2006. Some of the top fighters of kickboxing, grappling and MMA competed in 48 weight categories for boys, girls, women and men. The event was also a starter to the MMA circuit "Clash of the Champions 4." The event received cross sanctions from IKF and ISCF Headquarters in USA.

President of IKF and ISCF Mr. Steve Fossum was pleased to sanction this MMA / Kickboxing event as the first officially IKF sanctioned event in India and since the COTC shows have received worldwide recognition as being the pioneer MMA all year round circuit in India.

As a main attraction for the event a team of fighters from the Islamic Republic of Iran faced some of the Indian talent as part of the main event final bouts. Nagaland claimed the team trophy and the prize for the best kickboxer of the event was given to Nobin Basumatary of Nagaland. During the special attraction International bouts Shoaib Shabani of Iran lost to Hekato Zhimo of India (bantamweight kickboxing) and Shouresh Syadi of Iran defeated Yogesh Dhondge of India in the welterweight kickboxing category.

At the main event the following was the results: In the ladies main event bout for the Ladies National Amateur kickboxing title Ranjita Pujari (Right) of Sangli knocked out Sunidhi Halan of Pune in Round 2 of the scheduled 3 round fight. The bout was hard hitting and Ranjita dominated the entire 2 rounds.

For the National amateur title in the semi grappling division (Rules from India) Vishal Balkawde of Devlali faced some stiff opposition against the 6 foot 2 inch Pune fighter Prabal Chaudhary but Vishal won with a unanimous decision. Semi grappling is a unique kickboxing style which incorporates wrestling, judo and kickboxing and Vishal has led the bandwagon of wrestlers and judokas who are now brave enough to train and compete in kickboxing events successfully. In Amateur semi grappling punches are not allowed to the face but permitted in Pro semi grappling.

Balkrishna Shetty of Mumbai faced Sunil "Axeman" Khakhalary of Nagaland. Sunil turned out strong in the early part of the first round as he knocked down Bala with a stunning flying spinning heel kick. But Bala showed some heart as he recovered from the standing eight count and came back with a flurry of punches to end the bout for Sunil. This bout was for the Asian Amateur kickboxing title since Sunil has previously competed for a world title and Balkrishna is a past WKL asian kickboxing amateur champion.

In the final MMA superfight of the evening "Superkick" Shafiqur Rehman Shaikh of Mumbai started the bout with a high flying spinning heel kick and soon after landed a right cross on the chin of Pravin Kale. Pravin dropped to the canvas and tried to defend himself against Shafiques' punched by stretching his arms out, this was just Shafiques plan as he grabbed his arm and went for his infamous arm bar. Pravin tapped out immediately giving Shafique a 45 second victory.

For those reading this from countries who do not know much about MMA, MMA is the latest hybrid sport which combines grappling, groundfighting and striking rules. Although in India very few fighters dare to compete in MMA. India has a set of enthusiastic and hardworking pro MMA fighters who compete regularly on the world MMA circuit and make our nation proud as well as make a decent living off of it. A total cash prize of Rs Ten Thousand was given at the event. All prizes and trophies were given by Deepak Balkawde and Advocate Gorakhnath Balkawde of the Balkawde International sports complex.

Sponsors for the event were Tigers Fight Promotions [CEO Daniel Isaac], Jitu Jain Consultants [Mr Jitu Jain] and Balkawde Sports Complex. Ring for the event was provided by the Nasik district Kickboxing council. It is important to note that the Nasik Dist Kickboxing Council is the only district kickboxing organization in the state to own its own portable kickboxing ring.

The Mumbai Kickboxing Council has planned to organize "Clash of the Champions 5" in Carter Road Bandra in August this year. Six main event bouts have been planned for the event out of which 3 bouts will be held with Kickboxing rules and the other three will be held with MMA rules. Top fighters from Iran will face the best fighters of Mumbai, Nagaland and Delhi at this event. This will be the pioneer MMA & Kickboxing event which will be held for the first time in Mumbai and promoter Daniel Issac will lead the organizing committee of the Mumbai event. Nasik continues to be the hub for International and national activities for kickboxing and MMA in India informs Daniel Isaac the chief organizer. Lives Up To Its Name!
Franck Goes The Distance To Take Win - Rockford, Illinois, USA

The Gladiators Fighting Series returned to a packed Giovanni's Convention Center in Rockford, Illinois this past Friday night in grand fashion with "Rocktown Showdown," a Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts dual style fight card.

It was a classy, action packed affair from start-to-finish thanks to the efforts of local Gladiator & IKF/ISCF Promoters Colin Kvool and Frank Ingardona, owners of Rockford Kickboxing & Jiu-Jitsu, which presented the well produced event.

Staying true to Rockford's long standing and rich history as one of America's top cities for Kickboxing and ring sports in general, the show offered a variety of stoppages and close decisions in rapid fire succession as the crowd responded loudly and often.

The highly anticipated main event of the evening featured a Gladiators Light Heavyweight Kickboxing bout between Rockford's native son, Bryce "Bam Bam" Franck and French Kickboxing Champion Simon "The Lion of Senegal" Diouf of Paris, France who now resides and trains in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Franck and Diouf both delivered sharp kicks and impressive punching combinations for the duration of three, close rounds. In the end, Franck out worked Diouf just enough to earn a unanimous decision victory mainly due to successful body punches, effective knees in the clinch and solid, consistent leg kicks.

The night started off with three spirited exhibitions, two of which were Submission Grappling bouts. The Wilson brothers, Dallas and Wesley squared off against each other in a Super Heavyweight MMA exhibition, and when we say "Super Heavyweight," we mean it! Each brother weighed in at over 330 lbs. and stood over 6 feet tall. The crowd loved it as the brothers banged away at each other, setting the tone for what was to come.

The undercard featured "Danny Boy" Downes (Kickboxing), Quinton McCottrell (MMA), Leslie Stoll (Kickboxing), Rachid Maakoul and "Looney" Toon Singmouangthong (MMA) all earning victories.

The main card began with a rubber match between Rockford's Rafael Czaplicki and Chicago's "Terrible" Terry Brown. Each of these two Kickboxers previously owned a victory over the other (and the only loss on each of their records). After another entertaining, hard fought contest, Czaplicki came out the victor by majority decision and improved his record to 3-1, while Brown goes to 4-2.

Gary Young came all the way from Forest, Ohio attempting to disappoint local standout Justin Weiman. Unfortunately for Young, Weiman's grappling skills quickly became overwhelming, causing Young to tap out from strikes at 1:12 of the opening round. Credit has to be given to Young for stepping up and taking the bout on short notice with the much more experienced Weiman.

  1. Tom Tucker, 130 lbs. defeated Joseph Redmond, 132 lbs. by split decision.
  2. Martavius Bond, 160 lbs. defeated Thomas Guy, 165 lbs. by KO in the first round.
  3. Christopher Brantley, 220 lbs. defeated James Allen, 225 lbs. by KO in the second round.

The card also featured three martial arts demonstrations.

Championships

Mike Storm, IKF Representative: Chris Reyna and Bruce Williams of Sidekicks Martial Arts in Nampa, Idaho were the hosts of the IKF North Mountain Regional Kickboxing Championships at Sage Valley Intermediate School on May 13, 2006.

This was a non mandatory regional tournament for those looking for a higher seeding at the IKF World Classic in July. Although 7 states in all were included in the boundaries for this event (Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Oregon, Wyoming, Montana and Washington) only two States sent fighters. Still, there was some great action by those willing to "Walk The Walk!"

Fighters from Idaho and Montana were the ones in attendance to "Walk The Walk" competing in Muay Thai and International Rules bouts for regional titles and seeding placements at the IKF World Classic Amateur Kickboxing Tournament scheduled in Cedar Rapids, Iowa this year on July 28th, 29th & 30th.


Here are the bout results below:


  1. Junior Featherweight, International Rules
    Kaden Fondren (4-3, 3 KO's, Nampa, Idaho) Vs Jacob Fuller (3-0, Nampa, Idaho)
    This was the 3rd fight between these boys. The first two were won by Jacob Fuller representing the only losses on Kaden Fondren's record. Kaden was unable to avenge the previous losses by losing the decision once again to Jacob.
    ROUND 1: Fuller came out of the corner swinging. A barrage of punches backed Fondren up early in the round smothering him and keeping him from doing anything in return.
    ROUND 2: The second round was much the same as the first with Fuller using longer arms and stronger punching skills to keep Fondren off of him.
    ROUND 3: A good round for Fondren who dug deep and fought his way inside and work Fuller over to win the round on 2 of the 3 judges scorecards with a continuous flurry of punches. Unfortunately for Fondren, it was too little too late.
    Judges Ray Perales had it 28-29, Fuller, Patrick Smith had it 27-30, Fuller and Jason Reed had it 28-29, Jacob Fuller who took the bout by unanimous decision.

  2. Junior Welterweight, International Rules
    Callie Waite (1-2, Meridian, Idaho) Vs Savannah Hill (2-0, Nampa, Idaho)
    ROUND 1: Both girls came out kicking and punching each other relentlessly with neither wanting to give up ground. The edge probably went to Waite for getting off first throughout most of the exchanges.
    ROUND 2: Hill appeared stronger in this round throwing more kicks and started backing Waite up toward the end of the round.
    ROUND 3: The last round started and stopped much the same way with both girls kicking and punching and neither wanting to give in. Hill appeared to have a slight edge with a higher volume of leg kicks.
    In a very close fight, Judges Ray Perales saw it 28-28, Even, Patrick Smith had it 28-29, Hill and Jason Reed had it 28-29, Savannah Hill who took the bout by majority decision.

  3. Junior Welterweight, International Rules
    Taylor Waite (2-2, Meridian, Idaho) Vs Sterling Jones (0-1, Nampa, Idaho)
    ROUND 1: Superior boxing skills and footwork made Waite a difficult target for Jones to hit in the first round.
    ROUND 2:Jones was able to cut off the ring and land a few blows making it a close round. Waite appeared to have the stronger punches making it a hard round to score.
    ROUND 3: Jones came ahead early moving Waite back with strong punches forcing Waite to hold-on. Waite was given a warning in the round for tripping in an effort to escape Jones. Jones won the last round on all judges scorecards.
    In a very close fight… Judges Ray Perales, 28-29, Jones Patrick Smith, 29-28, Waite and judge Jason Reed had it 29-28, Taylor Waite who took the bout by split decision.

  4. Adult Welterweight, Muay Thai Rules
    Joseph Crego (1-0/1, Nampa, Idaho) Vs Torr Harrison (0-1, Missoula, Montana)
    ROUND 1: Superior height and reach gave Harrison an advantage right off. Harrison punched Crego in the face several times and then delivered knees to Crego's body while in the clinch. A well placed knee from Harrison to Crego's body put Crego down for an 8-count in the round. Harrison was unable to put Crego away before the end of the round.
    ROUND 2: At the start of the round, Harrison appeared tired from exerting so much energy at the end of the first round trying to put Crego away. Crego started the second round with something to prove. Crego charged inside of Harrison's punches and delivered a series of his own punches which backed Harrison into the corner causing him to cover up. Crego continued pounding Harrison to the head and when Harrison failed to fight back, Referee Todd Young stepped in and stopped the fight at :53 seconds of Round 2. Winner by TKO…Joseph Crego

  5. Super Heavyweight, Muay Thai Rules
    John Ladd (6-0, 1 KO, Nampa, Idaho) Vs Marcus Nicola (0-1, Missoula, Montana)
    ROUND 1: Ladd with long legs threw several kicks to Nicola's head throughout the round. When Nicola charged inside to get at Ladd's body, Ladd tied him up stalling Nicola's attack. Ladd then managed to work the knees on the inside and then tie Nicola up again causing Nicola to be unable to work effectively in the clinch.
    ROUND 2: The second round was simply a continuation of the first round. Ladd would hit or kick Nicola and then tie him up.
    ROUND 3: Ladd dominated the round alternating strong kicks to Nicola's legs and then going upstairs to the head. Nicola was unable to get inside in the third round. Ladd finished the fight strong.
    Judges Ray Perales, 30-27, Ladd, Patrick Smith, 29-28, Ladd and Jason Reed, 30-27, Ladd
    Winner by unanimous decision…John Ladd

Captain Kangaroo passed away on January 23, 2004 at age 76 , which is odd, because he always looked to be 76. (DOB: 6/27/27.) His death reminded me of the following story. Some people have been a bit offended that the actor, Lee Marvin, (Below Left) is buried in a grave alongside 3 and 4 star generals at Arlington National Cemetery. His marker gives his name, rank (PVT) and service (USMC). Nothing else. Here's a guy who was only a famous movie star who served his time, why the heck does he rate burial with these guys? Well, following is the amazing answer: I always liked Lee Marvin, but didn't know the extent of his Corps experiences.

In a time when many Hollywood stars served their country in the armed forces often in rear echelon posts where they were carefully protected, only to be trotted out to perform for the cameras in war bond promotions, Lee Marvin was a genuine hero. He won the Navy Cross at Iwo Jima. There is only one higher Naval award... the Medal Of Honor.

If that is a surprising comment on the true character of the man, he credits his sergeant with an even greater show of bravery.

Dialog from "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson": His guest was Lee Marvin. Johnny said, "Lee, I'll bet a lot of people are unaware that you were a Marine in the initial landing at Iwo Jima...and that during the course of that action you earned the Navy Cross and were severely wounded."

"Yeah, yeah... I got shot square in the bottom and they gave me the Cross for securing a hot spot about halfway up Suribachi. Bad thing about getting shot up on a mountain is guys getting' shot hauling you down. But, Johnny, at Iwo I served under the bravest man I ever knew... We both got the cross the same day, but what he did for his Cross made mine look cheap in comparison. That dumb guy actually stood up on Red beach and directed his troops to move forward and get the hell off the beach. Bullets flying by, with mortar rounds landing everywhere and he stood there as the main target of gunfire so that he could get his men to safety. He did this on more than one occasion because his men's safety was more important than his own life. That Sergeant and I have been lifelong friends. When they brought me off Suribachi we passed the Sergeant and he saw me lying on my belly on the litter and said, where'd they get you Lee?' Well Bob... if you make it home before me, tell Mom to sell the outhouse!" Johnny, I'm not lying, Sergeant Keeshan was the bravest man I ever knew. The Sergeant's name is Bob Keeshan (Right).You and the world know him as Captain Kangaroo."

When we received this story in an e-mail from one of our friends, we thought it was such a great story, we wanted to share it with everyone.
However today someone informed us the story is false.
The Truth: (From www.truthorfiction.com) This story almost complete fabrication. Lee Marvin and Bob Keeshan did both serve in the Marines. Before his death in January, 2004, we checked with Bob Keeshan, who was living in Vermont, and he said he never served at Iwo Jima, was not presented with the Navy Cross and, in fact, never saw combat. There is no record of Lee Marvin at Iwo Jima or winning the Navy Cross. According to a biography that we have on file at TruthOrFiction.com, Marvin did see a lot of action in the Pacific participating in the invasions at Kwajalein and Eniwetok and was wounded in Saipan, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. Marvin is buried in Arlington Cemetery.

Man it stinks when we mess up like this. But we had to admit it...

On another note, there was this wimpy little man (who just passed away) on PBS, gentle and quiet. Mr. Rogers is another of those you would least suspect of being anything but what he now portrays to our youth. But Mr. Rogers was a U.S. Navy Seal, combat-proven in Vietnam with over twenty-five confirmed kills to his name. He wore a long-sleeved sweater on TV, to cover the many tattoos on his forearm and biceps. He was a master in small arms and hand-to-hand combat, able to disarm or kill in a heartbeat.

After the war Mr. Rogers became an ordained Presbyterian minister and therefore a pacifist. Vowing to never harm another human and also dedicating the rest of his life to trying to help lead children on the right path in life. He hid away the tattoos and his past life and won our hearts with his quiet wit and charm.

The Truth: (From www.truthorfiction.com) Fred Rogers (Right), the founder and host of the popular U.S. children's television program Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood never served in the military. There have been various false rumors about him including one that claims he always wore long-sleeved shirts to hide his tattoo.

Once again, it stinks when we mess up but when we do, we need to admit it! Next time we need to check this out first...

Calleros
Is On A Roll!


IKF Pro international rules World Champion Fernando Calleros is on a roll. He has won his last three fights. His most recent win was over former IKF World Champion Danny Steele. Steele came out of retirement to fight another bout at the recent K-1 USA event in Las Vegas. Calleros won the 5 round bout by decision and it was the third time he defeated Steele.

Tomorrow Calleros will travel to England to fight George Pattison for another Kickboxing Title. If he wins he will have held World Titles in Full Contact, Muay Thai and International rules.

Along with Steele, Calleros recently defeated Danny Griffen in Chicago and Victor Cuellar in Juarez, Mexico His fight record now stands at 32 wins, 8 losses, 2 draws and 16 of his wins coming by KO/TKO.

Jean-Yves Theriault was called the Iceman and ruled the 1980's as one of the kings of the kickboxing world. When many professional fighters' careers lasted a few months, Iceman Theriault was a World Champion for over a decade. 2nd Regional Of 2006 For The
2006 IKF World Classic


IKF North Central Regional director Rob Zbilski and his Promotional Team are all set to host the second IKF Regional Seeding Tournament for this years 2006 IKF World Classic Kickboxing Championships in July.

Zbilski has estimated around 50 fighters will "Walk The Walk" tomorrow at what is known as the IKF North Central #1. This regional is for Full Contact Rules only and will be held at the Crowne Plaza in Mundelien, Illinois, USA. Fighters will be coming from Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota.

Bouts will begin at 7:PM tomorrow night. Spectator tickets for the event are, Gold Table Seats: (Ringside) $40.00 (Advance Purchase Price), Silver Table Seats: $30.00 (Advance Purchase Price), and General Admission: $25.00 (Advance Purchase Price). Starting a week from tonight, May 11th, new IKF Promoter Randall Stephen Hall and the Big Kahuna, West Tennessee's number one source for entertainment, will begin a "Nine" week series of "FightNight". Each of the events will be an exciting night of amateur kickboxing in Jackson, Tennessee! Expect fast and furious action from the area's best Amateur Kickboxers!

Assisting Hall will be former Kickboxing Champion Anthony Maness of Lexington, Tennessee(Pro: 17-0/16, AK: 45-5) who will also be on hand as the IKF event representative. Next Thursday, May 11th the doors will open at 7:PM with the fights starting at 8:30 PM. Admission is $7.00 at the door. While there, take some time to enjoy the fine food served by the Big Kahuna restaurant.

Returns To Mohegan Sun Arena

The World Combat League (WCL - www.WorldCombatLeague.com) makes a return engagement to the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. The scheduled date for the next WCL event is June 24, 2006.

The WCL is the creation of action-film and television star Chuck Norris, fulfilling his life-long vision to combine the extraordinary excitement of martial arts combat with the thrill of routing for your favorite team. Each contest will feature world class martial arts athletes competing on behalf of their city in team fighting events. Fans will be able to follow and support their favorite team throughout an entire league season that has been appropriately dubbed "The Turf Wars!"

The WCL is the world's only Kickboxing, Team Combat martial arts league. The WCL's first full season will have four teams, each featuring 5 men and 1 woman. Clifford Larson of Camp Verde, Arizona USA (12-10/2) came to the ring this past Saturday night with "10" loses on his record. So HOW in the World did he get a "World Title" Shot?

That seemed to be the question asked over and over by many, yet the answer was as easy as the explanation we gave in the pre-fight article. To make it simple, Larson started out his kickboxing career without the proper training. Sure, he had good "Karate" Training, but the ring of "Full Contact" fighting was a far cry from "Kei" and "Forms". Still, he "Walked the Walk" seven straight times, giving the best he had, but coming away the loser in all 7 tries.

Enter "REAL Kickboxing Trainer" Richard Williams... Williams had been out of the Camp Verde area for some time, but on his return, Larson was looking for a trainer who could teach him the "Real Skills" of Full Contact Kickboxing. When we say "Full Contact", we don't mean Full Contact "Rules" (Above the waist). We simply mean "Full CONTACT!" Not the "Pull your punch" karate style fighting...

Under Williams guidance, Larson won 4 different IKF titles. Under Williams guidance, Larson had won 11 bouts while coming up short in 3. In reality, his "Kickboxing" record should read more like 11-3. However Larson as well as Williams are proud of "EVERY" fight on his record, even those 7 loses. Those 7 loses taught Larson to remember something that can not be taught to ANY Fighter... "HEART!

It was more than Heart we saw in the ring this past Saturday night. Camp Verde, Arizona is about two hours north of Phoenix Arizona. The center stage was on the Yavapia Apache Nation reservation. The night was billed as, "The Night Of the Warriors On Sacred Grounds."

After the excitement of the 5 undercard bouts, next came two IKF regional Titles leading up to the quest for the vacant IKF Amateur Super Welterweight World title. (Results of the regional title bouts below) On paper, this was an easy win for Larson's opponent Darren Snell of Calgary Alberta, Canada. With a fight record of 10 wins and only 1 loss, the idea of losing this bout was the farthest thing from Snell's mind. Adding to it, Snell had already defeated Larson two years ago at the IKF North American tournament. And as if that wasn't enough, Snell is trained by one of the greatest Muay Thai Trainers in the world, Mike Miles.

Three of Miles fighters seemed to set the stage for a Snell victory earlier in the night. Sylvie Charbonnea who is actually trained by one of Miles Pro Champion fighters, Trevor Smandych started things off when she defeated Sonya Gurule of New Mexico by unanimous decision. Next came multi time IKF Champion Jesse Miles (Mike's son). Jesse made quick and impressive work of Mark Korzeniowski of Colorado knocking him out in 54 seconds of the first round. The trio ended with Nate Smandych (Trevor's brother) defeating Marc Cloud of New Mexico by unanimous decision. For Team Canada, it looked to be yet another night of "Business as usual". However, as all of us here know, this is the Fight Game! And in this game, ANYTHING can happen!

Although the hometown fighter, Larson came to the ring first out of respect for Snell. Once the two were in the ring, the gloves came on and we were set for battle. IKF Referee Dan Stell gave final instructions and it was time to "Bring It On!"

Both started out composed and careful in round one. However it would be Snell who would press the action and in doing so, won all three judges cards 10-9. In round two, Larson tried to pick up his pace but his efforts were only noticed by one of the three judges. Judge Brett Herman of Canada gave Larson round 2 but the other two judges, Joe Joseph on Arizona and Tony Rosales of New Mexico gave the round to Snell.

From ringside, we thought both were starting out slower than expected and neither was "Dominating" the other in any phase of the fight. In the corner after round two, Larson's cornerman, multi time kickboxing Champion himself, Roberto "Golden Leg" Carrillo told him to "Be more relaxed and lighter on his feet." Where was Larson's trainer Richard Williams? Williams did not feel it was proper to corner Larson as the show Promoter and later told us, "We have a good system and team working here. we all have our duties to make the team a success." Larson also had former Pro Boxing Champion (WBO NABO Welterweight Champion ) Tony Ganarelli in his corner.

Carrillo's "Lighter on his feet" advice was clearly noticed at the start of the third round. Larson came out "Hopping" on his toes around the ring.. no really... He was "HOPPING". In fact, he looked so relaxed and confident you would have thought he was holding back in rounds one and two and had just decided to start to fight. Larson fired off what can be called in "Hindsight" a few "Warning Shots" which Snell had no problem returning fire to. Both had stepped it up in this round but it was Larson who was the most noticeable in the opening seconds as he literally skipped and hopped around Snell like Ali use to do as a Boxing Champion.

Then, at about 35 seconds into the round, Larson stepped forward and unloaded one of the most powerful uppercuts we had seen in a long time and Snell's chin was in the direct path of the shot. Snell took the punch square on the jaw and went down hard. As he rolled over, his eyes looked at us at ringside and it was clear, he had taken a punishing blow. It was at that moment we were glad it wasn't us taking such a shot.

Snell looked to his corner as if to say "Sorry Coach, but that was a shot." However, even the veteran trainer Miles knows "Anyone can go down at any time, and who would argue with a shot like that!" Like a true Miles warrior, Snell rose to his feet and beat the count. If referee Dan Stell would have stopped the bout here, few would question it. But Snell assured him he wanted to continue, so Stell granted him another chance. As Stell re-started the action, Larson charged Snell into the corner like a raging bull and simply, went to work...

We later counted on the fight video that Larson threw between 12 and 14 unanswered punches at Snell (Right). Caring for Snell's safety, Stell stepped in and called the bout at 1:01 of the third round. Even if he gave Snell another 8 count, he still would have had almost a full half of a round of a Larson storm to weather, and after that uppercut shot, that just wasn't going to happen.

Within seconds the crowd stormed the ring. Miles and the fight doctor quickly went to Snell's side to protect him from the over excited hometown crowd that filled the ring. The unthinkable had just happened. It was the Cinderella Story of the Cinderella Kid, Clifford Larson had just become an IKF Amateur World Champion. Adding to it, he became the FIRST EVER Native American World Champion too.

Larson proudly took the belt for a night that was just beginning. How long does the average Main Event Champion stay in the ring and take pictures and sign autographs? Well, we are pretty sure Larson set a new record there as well. Larson stayed in the ring for nearly "TWO" hours greeting his hometown fans.

For Snell, the loss was bittersweet. His first shot at a World Title, but he fell short of his goal. Still, we are sure, it will not be his last shot at such a title. Snell is a warrior and this loss is only a small bump in the road of his great fighting career. Who knows, we may see these two in a rematch for this very title in the future or they may meet up again at this years IKF World Classic in Iowa in July.

Regardless, this is just the beginning of two great fighting careers. Cheers to Team Canada who, as always, came with respect and CLASS!

Congratulations to Clifford Larson who on this night, not only became a Kickboxing World Champion, but also a Champion of the Kickboxing Fans.
