A Little Lesson in IKF History...
The IKF Championship Belts...

Any old time IKF Champions remember this medallion above that was on the IKF Title belts years ago? It was designed off the original logo Dan Stell and I created (Mainly Dan's work, I'm no artist... :O ) when the IKF was formed back in 1992.

On the first IKF logo, the figure to the right use to be a standing boxer. It was replaced by Toni Fossum (Foster) of Foster Graphics with the Kicking figure on the right on the medallion above.

Back then, to make the IKF belts the artwork was sent to a local foundry owned by good friend Fred Eichenhofer who pored the solid brass medallions.

Once done, they were taken to Alex Blanca at his metal shop to be polished to a shinny gold.

Once polished they were brought back to the IKF HQ and hand painted. Although I did a ton myself, others who served at this task back then were Frank Curtis, Bill Gillespie and Glenn Berg. Glenn was also a professional photographer and took photos at a lot of the IKF World Classic Tournaments.

The very first medallions never received a clear coat, and ended up fading over time but eventually we got smart and started clear coating these. This was just one part of a long process in hand making all the IKF Title Belts back then, a decision made after the belt maker we were using (Clemmer Belts ) failed at their job as well as stiffed us for $300.00.

The changing moment was on July 10th, 1998 when they failed to put our IKF Logo Medallion on an IKF World Title belt for then IKF Pro Muay Thai United States Cruiserweight Champion Kurt Podany (Left) when he took on then IKF Pro Muay Thai United States Light Cruiserweight Champion, Kwame Stephens.

Instead, they put a pot metal generic medallion of a couple of karate guys kicking instead of the custom IKF Logo. We re-ordered the belt, paid them Another $300 to have it done, and then they claimed they were never paid... Even though we showed proof of the cashed check...

After we used up all the belts we already had in stock and after I had tried out several design ideas, we found ourselves with our backs against the wall trying to get belts for the IKF Mass Destruction event in May 1999. All the belts awarded that night were the very first hand made belts we did. All the leather was hand cut out of hides, all the tooling, screws, buckle etc was all self designed. Looking back, these belts were Terrible and we have offered to redo them for all the Champions but so far we have only redid one, for IKF Pro World Champion Mike LaBree.

We STILL would like to redo all the others so they have a MUCH nicer show belt. Those Champions included Don Wilson, Rick Roufus, Tommy Tom Kimber and Paul Biafore. If your reading this Champs, just send us your old IKF Belt and a new one will be sent your way. This also goes for IKF Pro Women's USA Champion Kellie Morse.

After that night, the belts became A LOT nicer. Better leather tooling, better hardware and just overall a much nicer belt. However, these belts took A LOT of time to make. I can still remember when I was the only one making them, and running around to the foundry, polisher, paint store, the guys at Wilson Leather in Napa CA buying hides of leather. However, we got so good at it, we ended up doing belts for a lot of other fight sports as well as corporate awards and it ended up becoming another company outside the IKF and ISCF.

As time past we had to have the medallions made at a foundry in South San Francisco (Terminal Brass) since new CA laws and outright ridiculous regulations forced most of the metal foundries out of business in California. Luckily for Fred Eichenhofer he got out of the "Very Hard Work" of running his massive foundry in Newcastle, CA and started his own very successful Real Estate Company which he still does today.

Alex Blanca sold his polishing company to another great guy who was working for him at the time, Robert Bell who continued his great work.

Bill Gillespie left the belt making work and became a Chiropractor and has his office here in the same building the IKF HQ is in. Bill was also a former martial arts student of mine and a kickboxer.

Frank Curtis went on and advanced his career in automotive repair and became a service writer at a local dealership.

Towards the end of this old school process of belt making it was just Glenn Berg and myself doing the painting, leather work and putting the belts together and everything else that went along with it such as regular trips 100 miles away to pick up medallions from the foundry.

Sometime around 2009 though we started changing our belt design. The always changing CA State regulations eventually even put the mega foundry Terminal Brass in South San Francisco out of business... (Something CA continues to do with manufacturing companies) We had always thought Terminal Brass was untouchable since they had a lot of large military contracts making parts for Navy ships and other military needs...

We started purchasing pre-cut leather. Ordering the medallions from a local trophy shop, (Wilson Trophies) that came to us already polished and painted saving a TON of time.

Over the years this process was improved upon over and over again and continues to improve to this day. Today we have a GREAT partner on the manufacturing side who works closely with us in medallion designs and inventory to keep producing the great looking custom IKF Championship belts the Champions are awarded today.

Who would ever imagine that even IKF Amateur Champions today are awarded Championship Belts most Pro World Champions of years past would be envious of...

And that my friends, is just a short story in IKF History...

Promoter Paul O Brien ran a White Collar Boxing Charity fight night in LIT, Limerick, Ireland on Saturday 8th June, 2019 and applied to IKF Ireland to stage.

The title was the IKF -60kg Amateur Unified Rules / K-1 Title fight between home fighter Tyrone Croinin/O' Brien and Peter Deane from Coopers MMA in Co Navan as main event.

The Title fight turned out to be a classic encounter which went the full five rounds with both fighters giving it all they had. Chief referee on the night Tony O Donnell listed the fight in his top five of all time and the fight fans in attendance raised the roof when local hero Tyrone was declared the winner and newly crowned All Ireland IKF Champion.

Well known and admired Dr. Allan Fields (L) of Florida accepted his appointment as the Chief Medical Advisor for IKF Kickboxing and ISCF MMA in May of 2007.

Along with his appointments to the IKF and ISCF, Dr. Fields is Chief Medical Advisor for many fight sport sanctioning bodies (Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai & Mixed Martial Arts) such as the Florida Kickboxing and Karate Association, the Florida Gold Coast Boxing Association, the International Sport Karate/Kickboxing Association and many other fight sport organizations. He is also the Chief Medical Advisor and Chief Ringside Physician for the State of Florida Athletic Commission and has been an intrical part of developing Ringside Physicians around the globe in all fight sports. He also serves as the Chief Ringside Physician for the IKF World Classic Tournaments and was inducted into the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame in 2009.

He has been a surgeon since 1973 and has been involved in sports medicine his entire career. His resume and list of honors is long and impressive and includes serving as team physician to the USA Olympic Team and serving as chairman of the Medical Advisory Board for the Florida State Athletic Association. A member of the USA Olympic Boxing Committee, he was vice-president of the American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians, and was named Physician of the Year, in 2004, by the AAPRP. Currently he is on the Executive Committee, the Board of Directors and the Medical Review Board of the American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians, which is an international, non-profit organization dedicated to the health and safety of the professional and amateur boxer.

Established in 1997, the American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians was created to develop medical protocols and guidelines to insure the safety and protection of professional boxers. The organization is comprised of the brightest and most experienced ringside physicians throughout the world who are devoted and dedicated to the medical aspects of boxing. Since their inception, the AAPRP now includes physicians from around the globe, working towards a common goal of insuring health, safety and protection in the sport of boxing.

Along with working with other fight sport sanctioning and regulatory bodies, Dr. Fields will be working with the IKF and ISCF in several different arenas. His main responsibility and concern is to continue to help enhance the safety issues of both Amateur and Pro Kickboxers and Mixed Martial Art Fighters. Additional concerns will center around the growth and safety of Mixed Martial Arts throughout North America on the Amateur Level.

The need for a legit, safe and credible Amateur MMA Sanctioning body has become a necessity in nearly every state in America and Dr. Fields and several others feel the ISCF is one of the top organizations capable of overseeing such a task, as is IKF Kickboxing for both Professional and Amateur Kickboxing. Already the leading Sanctioning Bodies for both sports, the IKF and ISCF are continuing to grow rapidly. The growth of the ISCF though has been staggering since 2005. Much of this success can be accredited to fighter registrations and the constant overseeing of amateur fight cards to assure amateurs are not fighting professionals as they are allowed to do on some of the other MMA sanctioning bodies events.

Since more and more USA States are discovering unethical practices among the many alphabet soup sanctioning bodies for kickboxing and MMA, Dr. Fields will assist the IKF and ISCF as one of the most established and endorsed Amateur Fight Sport Sanctioning Bodies for Kickboxing and MMA in the USA as is USA Boxing in America is for Amateur Boxing. The IKF and ISCF are proud to have Dr. Fields as a valued part of their fighter safety and medical advisory board.
